Bioware - why always so crappy graphics?

Bioware appears to be consistently half a generation behind it`s competitiors. I`ve played bioware games for the story, but i tend to buy games on large part for their graphics as well.
Even Dragon age II which was supposed to have upgraded graphics looks years old already and it`s not even out yet.
Gameplay graphics look foggy with bland textures and awkward gestures. I love a good story, but if the gameplay and graphics aren`t up to par then, for me at least, the entertainment value takes a dive.
With everything that has been said about improved graphics it was depressing to find that the actual graphical difference is negligible- i doubt there will be an overhaul these last two months. Afterall the game has to enter production shortly if it`s to reach the outlets in time.
I was going to pre-order the game, but these last two weeks looking at the gameplay footage have turned me away. I`ll wait for the Eurogamer: Digital Foundry and IGN reviews before i decide whether to actually buy the game at all.
I had hoped Bioware put more effort into designing the game- there are so many good looking games on this generation i`m left utterly bewildered as to how BioWare manages to consistently lag so far behind the curve.
If BioWare simply lacks the competence to do the design work why not stick to making stories and gameplay concepts while hiring someone else to do the graphical presentation?
It`s a legitimate question- no one has accused BioWare of cutting edge graphics- maybe cutting edge effort with outdated graphics engines, but not cutting edge graphics..

Having said that, the latest screenshots show a definate improvement over DA:O.
Personally, i'm not all that fussed about the gaphics, it's the story I play for. But from what i've seen of the graphics, I'm happy.

Mass Effect/Mass Effect 2 look great. Especially if you're on a PC and crank the AA up.

I guess its a good thing that you will wait for the reviews if your concerns are for the graphics..In my case I play games strictly for the story and its a just a bonus if the game looks good like for instance there was a lot of bad press about how bad the DAO 360 version looked but I seriously didnt have a problem with it just as long as I could chop up darkspawn and perv on Alistair..

One of my favourite RPG of all time is 6mb and uses 2D 90's era JRPG goodness graphics.

I'm with you there on older games and graphics - The first 4 original SIERRA Kings Quest games will forever be my favourite of all time.

I keep seeing this response, but we are in an age where we can have both quality story and good quality graphics, but we all know the graphics get dialed back for performance reasons on certain platforms.Khayness wrote...

Sure, they could make the game look great but then it would have been really shot, like 15 hours. Just looks att DAII. They really improved the graphics and that shortened the game compared to DA:O.
Also, every desition in a game takes up space because they have to follow it up to make the desition count.
So the question is: Do you want a short great looking game with no really desitions to make or a OK looking long game where everything you deside changing the game?

ME2 had everthing there. Great graphics, good story, and a lengthy campaign. Why can't DA2?rodgerage wrote...
I believe ME1 and 2 and origins had pretty good graphics but you have to remember they are on a budget would want a game with awesome graphics but very short gameplay or a game with good graphics with a big gameplay experience.
There's no invisible scale of quality when making a game. Story, gameplay, and graphics are all worked on individually by seperate teams. You don't have to trade the quality of one to increase that of another.

Mass Effect 2 had horrible lo-res textures and they didn't even care to upgrade them for the PC version. Mass Effect 2 should have been a much better looking game.Xrissie wrote...
Both Mass Effect games had great graphics, even though ME1 had this texture loading bug.

I'm pretty sure BioWare will come up with and artistic point of view response, if they feel their graphics are adequate to tell the story they want, they will stick with it.
Just think about the unique cartoon graphics like XIII or Borderlands.

However, it might not be an entirely unreasonable position to argument that improved graphics could very likely draw the attention of alot more potential customers.
My predicament is that i love BioWare for their stories, but i`m annoyed by simple gameplay mechanics (mass effect 1-2) and sub-standard graphics (DA and ME). I have a number of ps3 games with absolute stunning graphics and great gameplay mechanics, but they don`t have BioWares attention to universe building and epic stories.
I hate to spend so much money on individual games where i only get half of what i want. So over the last year i`ve basically stopped buying new games (except uncharted and killzone 3 when it arrives) and instead buy them on the cheap some time later.
Not that i expect BioWare or any other developer to care about my opinions or purchasing habits. Just looking for what their other costumers are thinking.

From the general sentiment so ar i guess it`s very comforting for BioWare that many or maybe most of it`s costumers remain unconcerned as far as graphics as concerned.

So you want them to make a perfect game. Good! I was afraid you would have asked for something utterly unreasonable like, I dunno, making a perfect game.
Wait.

Dude, they actually care more than you realize but the fact is, it takes more than just a graphically beefed engine to make a good game. BioWare tell stories and they're stepping the graphics up slowly. You'll probably play a BioWare game with beefy graphics and awesome story someday before you die- just like the rest of us. But as of now, the saying, "Count your blessings is applicable here".
Patience is a virtue we could all use. I wonder if Bodahn has some for sale?
