Don't know why Shep picks a ragtag group of random people he meets to join him when he already has highly trained personnel from Alliance/Cerberus. Unless skills of Alliance specialists are lacking, his team should be more of a military unit with some outside specialist tagging in occasionally.

He picks them because TIM told him so. You know, you're allowed to protest the point in your opening dialogue with him...

I think the current mix is pretty good. All the actual soldier/officer-types like Jacob and Miranda (also Thane and Samara to an extent) are generally professional, while the crazies/infants like Jack and Grunt are not.

Anyone Shep meets has to be trained to learn the team's tactics. They don't have time to train, so they just run and gun.

Random "Yes sir, No sir" red shirts are not part of the whole "BEST TEAM EVAR".

Shepard recruits them because they're the best

Alliance should already have the best. And more disciplined, too. Rather than outsiders who learned their skills in some back alley.

Replacing "Yes, sir!" with "Yeah" "Sure" "Okay" "I guess" on a military team doesn't quite seem right.

I think the overall weakness of the ME1 team, at least compared to other Bioware parties, came from the fact that everyone was so disciplined and yes, professional. Its not surprising that Garrus with his dream of becoming a trigger happy vigilante of some kind and Wrex with his outbursts during the whole Genophage and killing Fist sequence were the most compelling members of the group.

I don't think even the best trained Alliance soldier can be compared with a krogan. Or Jack - it's directly told that she is the most powerful biotic. Or anyone have more experience in combat than asari justicar. All of those people were pre-chosen (well, almost all of them) - this is not a DA:O where Warden grabs everything what able to fight

You do know TIM picked them right? The only ones outside of that would be Legion and Morinth.

Shepard was recruiting specialists. Individuals that excelled in their fields outside of any form of command structure. People that agreed to join Shepard on a suicide mission to save the galaxy. While they may not have had time to train in team tactics, they were/are trusting each other to do their best while following Shepard's lead. I do not think even the best Cerebus or the Alliance had to offer would match the skill of those he recruited. And those such as Tali and Garrus had experience working with Shepard already from all they went through trying to stop Saren, the Geth, and the Reaper threat.

How can the outsiders be the "best" with mostly self-taught skills?

Tali got her training from Migrant Fleet. Garrus from C-sec. I'm sure neither of those two organizations are up on par with Alliance/Cerberus in those skills. Liara wasn't even a flighter, just another biotic user. Wrex was another Battlemaster, dying breed but still a crapload out there. Nothing special about those 4. They weren't the "best", just some random chumps.

Garrus was a member of the Turian military as part of their mandatory service policy.

Tali's pilgrimage training is pretty hardcore from all indications, she's already killed SEVERAL Geth before the start of ME1, and you could argue she's probably part of some kind of Special Ops division in 2.

As for Jack, she was condition to fight and kill informally by Cerberus - so even she has had some form of training unconventional as it may be/.

Yeah they weren't the best of their organizations. Just typical members.

Tali is considered to be a genius even among her own people. Garrus had the aspiration to be a Spectre but always had something holding him back. Both worked with Shepard and gained experience working with him already. They are also trusted friends and companions and have been through a lot together.

The history and training of the others is explained a little if you listen to what they have to say.

Just like a footballer can be the best by training themselves or a guitarist. Having rules and regulations might be damaging. And remember here is the list they seem pretty professional to me.

Spoilers Follow

Jacob and Miranda: Ceberus operatives, Jacob with Alliance training, Miranda breed to be perfect

Mordin: Former STG and brilliant scientist as seen with work on genophage

Garrus: Ex C-sec officer has already helped Shepard take down Saren. Held the Blue suns, Eclipse and blood pack at bay by himself

Thane: Trained assassin enough said

Jack: Freak of nature and science

Grunt: Breed to be the perfect Krogan

Legion: Special Geth unit made to be better than other units

Samara: Asari Justicar the best of the best. Morinth equals her mother in strength

Tali: proved herself against Saren

Zaeed: Founded the Blue Suns and have you listened to his stories

Kasumi: Don't actually know but I am sure she is good as well

His complaint as far as I can tell is he wants the team to be nearly ALL ALLIANCE/CERBERUS with at the best one or two aliens/outsiders as specialists. I think this might be the one idea that the entire forum can agree with is not a good one.
