This has probably been posted before, but I actually never really post on the DA forums so I'm not sure. I'm going to pick up DA:O soon so I'm reading up on DA2.

I just realized that DA2 is coming out like...15-16 months after the first one...I mean COD games have longer development time than that :?

I did at first but then I saw the game.:)
And remember, they started on DAII long before that during the years when Origins where being finetuned. As far as I know most of the pre-production was done when the game was released, as said in one of the diarys. That is why there is only one Origfin in DAII because they had already desided on that type of story. Infact, they got a litle worried when Origins got all the GotY awards knowing that people would be expecting things in the next game.

Heartless? Pfft.

The devs make us shed tears FOR THEIR SUSTENANCE.

Every once and a while, they need to be reminded that they are not just predators but prey.

And for some reason, I now want someone to take a photo of three predators and photoshop Mike Laidlaw, David Gaider, and for God knows what reason Casey Hudson's face on to theirs to represent what I am speaking of.

GET TO IT.

Only in one way: I'm worried it will be delayed.

Not even remotely. BW ain't let me down yet in many, many years after all :) Deserve some faith.

This.  Bioware hasn't made a bad game in who-knows how long.  First BW game I played was KotOR.  I was hooked.  'Best game I've ever played' I thought.  A lot of people abhorred the Mako from Mass Effect.  I didn't see any problems with it.  Again, best game ever.  People like to complain about the 'dumbing down' that ME2 has gone through, I thought it was fantastic.  Then Dragon Age came out.  I was swept away.

Ever since KotOR, one Bioware game or another has topped the list of my favorite games.  I'm willing to give them the benefit of a doubt.

To OP:

Bioware started development of DA II long before DA: O was released.

I don't think it was rushed I think the reason Origins was long in the making was because they first had to create thedas from scratch then write for the different Origins.

I just wish they started making it 2 months earlier than they did so I could be playing it nowPosted Image

Careful now, it's when you start putting faith into something that it begins to let you down.

But no, not really concerned. Hunreds of people and tens of millions of dollars can accomplish a lot.

To be perfectly honest, I don't have the same high expectations for DA2 as I had for DA:O. It's pretty much an additional chapter in the Dragon Age franchise for me. It will use the same graphics engine and be shorter than Origins. The game will probably feel like a big expansion pack. It will still be more interesting than most games this year, though.

I don't see how having the improved graphics then the original is a point toward it being an expansion pack with that logic you might as well say ME2 was an expansion pack.

I have a buddy that grooms one of the dev's tauntauns.  He told me that a dev told him that the development cycle for DA2 was closer to 24+ months.  Don't bother to Google this because I have an unnamed source and that's as good as it gets.

Development started when the DAO writers had to go into a lockdown at the end of DAO.  Not the police one, but the one were design change were no longer being allowed.  So the writers were writing for DA2 quite a while before DAO was even done... then the release date slipped and that bought them even more time.  Once DAO came out, they all took two weeks off because of worshiping Cthulu.  After that, they came back.  Mostly, they came back.  But they were different.

The remaining sixteen months were spent as follows:  Three months tweaking the engine to ensure it could support Hawke's smoking jacket.  Have you seen that thing?  ****ing sexy.  Two months of "design" to ensure proper boob ratio between Isabela, Hawkette, Bethany, Avelline, and Merrill.  Two more months on booty.  One month for cigarettes, you know I mean?  One full month on male companions, since, honestly, **** males in generall.  Six more months of dialogue, story, choices, scripting, and toning the cut scenes back from their initial X rating.

They've spent the rest of their time riding segways around the Mass Effect team's cubes and talking loudly about how sweet that Skyrim games looks.  When the ME team glares they're all like, "Oops, sorry!  We'll play your game too."

I think there would be less "why they rush?" sentiments if the marketing had not been so wonky.

Only two months, I was convinced they'd spent two years on this vital aspect of the game!

To the OP, I was also quite worried about the pace in which DA2 is ready for the mass market but they seem very optimistic and the recent vid's on development have been very convincing, save your worry for times of need.

Yep. There are still lots of bugs left in DA:O/Awakening and the last patch was like 6 months ago.
Plus there are basicly fewer options for everything in DA2. DA2 looks to me like it is a big step backwards to cater to casual action gamers rather than rpg fans.

Nobody said that DA2 is not going to be worth it's money just as DA:O was. But people can count, and you can't stop them doing it. The development time is less than half of DA:O, space on the HD is less than half and the average time for a playthrough probably will also be half of DA:O (something between 15 and 25 hours I guess). No matter what devs say people will be worried. The only way to disprove our worries is to make a game that proves our worries invalid. I'd just accept it because it is one of these things you cannot change.

Well depends what you consider a step backward. ME to ME2 was a step forward for me. Just because they strip unnessesary complexity and improve the action part doesn't make it a step backwards.

Maybe they should give us a bugstomper perk, like in FO:NV. Even though it didn't help much with the worst bugs.

But seriously, I'm not worried too much about bugs, really. At least, not from Bioware. The bugs in other games, though, are sometimes unbearable. Fallout 3, Oblivion, etc. Some of the most numerous bugs and glitches I've ever seen, and I still cringe at the memories, even if they were fixed sometime later, they were stll huuuuge. D:
I don't expect a bug free game, but I also don't expect BUGS. BUGS EVERYWHERE GOGOGOGO.

I'm more worried about how interesting the characters are going to be; so far, I'm uninterested as a whole in Isabela, Aveline or Bethany.

you know i always thought that it would have been common sense to have more than one project running simultaneously, if they were going to launch a franchise with the intent of having it be a contineous series

Dude I think the tear was more a tear of happiness....because someone LISTENED for a change, instead of complaining about the same damn thing OVER AND OVER, not paying any heed to the possibility that the complaints are unjustified and WRONG.

I think the Devs put up with far more here than they should. And you should feel LUCKY that the Bioware devs even bother to take the time out of their hectic schedule to come here and deal with this crap. Most game studios I've seen don't do this at all.

I'm not worried about the short development time. When it comes to bugs, I hope the game works better than Fallout New Vegas! Meaning the game wont freeze up every five minutes.
