Probably for the same reason that retailers accept credit cards.

Because it's now one of the largest digital distribution platforms out there and even if Valve are taking a hefty cut, with the potential in additonal sales some companies will deem that worthwhile.

If steam would have the SE edition more people would buy it via steam. I think most people rather use Steam than EA so if there would be persons using both of them they will be forced to buy the SE on EAstore since Steam doesn't have it. Reason that the normal version is available on steam is that since it will be released everywhere, you might as well do on steam.

You'll probably find that's not possible under penalty of death a non-disclosure agreement.

Why would anyone sell on Steam if it would cost them extra money?  I can't imagine Steam became a powerhouse from convincing company after company to release games for their DDS at an extra cost.  It would also not explain the constant sales in the slightest.

I mean, thank you for not attacking me, but that last little part you posted just seems off given my information.  If you have a link that proves otherwise, I am always willing to know more about these things for future discussions.

Walmart has long been accused of similar tactics.  I wouldn't all be surprised if that turned out to be the case.  Over the holidays I noticed that EA offered a substantial discount for Mass Effect 2 than Steam.

Quick question since I don't want to make a new topic. Will the normal DA2 version ( http://www.thehut.co...2/10225748.html ) contain the Black Emporium dlc and the weapon/shield? Because on that site, they don't make it clear and I want to buy it over there(since it's supercheap like hell...)

So
why not keep the sticky locked, as well?  Like, the second it was posted.  I don't mean to be a jerk, but it's not exactly a foreign concept in online forums.

Is it any surprise that this has become an "hourly post" when, A) people are really upset about this and, B) there's no evidence on the front page that anyone else has posted about this?

Ill see if I can dig up more info on how game companies sell on steam. Its tough to find and game companies won't admit it. I'll see what I can find. When I switched to Google chrome all my favorites went wacky. :(

And theres no reason to attack you. Its odd that the SE isn't on Steam. I don't plan to buy it from steam in anycase. Its $10 cheaper on Impulse. But its still weird they wouldn't offer it.

1) Thats a question only a mod or dev can answer

2) Because steam now has over 30 million active accounts. What game publishers wouldn't want a peice of that?  Of course it would not have started this way, but with steam the way it is now, they have much more power to bargain with. They can up their percentage of take because publishes know how big steam is.

Yes, all preordered copies will include the weapon and shield, and all new copies the emporium

All new editions of Dragon Age II will have the Black Emporium. Whether you pre-order the game or buy it at release, it will be included. If you pre-order Dragon Age II, you will also get Fadeshear and The Lion of Orlais.

I hope that is clearer. :)

As someone who works 60 hours a week in the business world (indeed, it's why I'm in Switzerland) that screams one thing to me:

EA is pushing their online service.

If EA is trying to create their own online DDS, which would be in competition with Steam which controls 70+% of the market, making sure you have a better deal is part of Step 2.  Step 1 is creating the service, in case you're wondering.

Again, as someone who works in business and someone who's hobby is gaming, I would love to see any links to evidence that Steam is charging more to sell games on their system.  It would be fascinating from so many points of view, and really speak a lot about their very secretive business model.

I also can't imagine how they got to be the dominate force in the market by charging extra, so it would have to be a more recent shift, but I would love to see any available numbers...

As far as I know, yes, it should do.

And good choice of retailer, I pre-ordered my SE from them (I have often had pre-orders arrive a day or two early in the past from them) ;)

and im sure that if you pre-ordered from anywhere that likes to give exclusive DLC promotions such as walmart or gamestop then those places will also give an extra bonus pre-order item ontop of the sword and shield

Despite having a .com address, thehut is a UK company. So it would not make much sense in Reinnaert's case to order from a US retailer. ;)

WHAATTT they had the SE? :(
and it is indeed a good retailer. Going to buy DA ultimate edition(don't have certain DLC and it's just too awesome and handy) and DA2 together and it'll only cost me €57 o.o.

and thanks for the replies everyone

As far as I know Steam and EA don't see eye to eye. Remeber EA has their own light digital distribution system. Maybe if you got it digitally you could only get the Signature edition through EA? It would make sense for a company to offer an incentive to buy from them as oppose to some else and in this case its a win/win for EA.

However i may be blowing smoke. I pre-ordered my signature edition a long time ago didn't keep up with it. some questions:

Could you even pre-order the signature edition digitally from the EA store?

Could you not do it else where, such as Steam (obviously you couldn't) Impulse or Direct 2 drive?

That article says nothing about Steam charging extra.  In fact, every developer and commentator commentating on that article points out that those 5 issues aren't true.  The article writer even admitted it:

"I think my concern was very much about what Steam could become, rather
than what it is. Google used to be the hero of the tech world, but is
now fast becoming the demon - I wanted to warn that the same might
happen to Valve.

Again, I would love real numbers or evidence.  That make come across as sarcastic, but I also work in the business industry.  That article was pure speculative journalism.  Interesting read, guaranteed to get comments, little in the way of actual evidence to support conclusions (which the writer even has to admit).

Yes, and oddly... it was cheaper than the regular version is.
Though obviously unfortunately in your case, no longer available.

well i dont know where all of the locations gamestop is in, but i do know that most of the places, where there is a gaming market, there is an EB games/gamestop, which they're owned by the same company and give the same pre-order bonuses, if im not mistaken.;)

i was also just listing them as examples because they're the two retailers that i know of that have exclusive pre-order bonuses the most

I saw real numbers once ever. It was from from a game company and I had it saved. And no that story wasn't to prove their business practice I just thought it interesting. I never take online stuff as fact. In this day and age my 13 year old brother is a blogger has thousands of subscribers hanging on their word.

I'm trying to dig it up again; the numbers. Even then it wasn't from Steam themselves but a different game company that used Steam.

I doubt that game distributors/studios would publicly release that information.  Unless they want to severe ties with Valve and that wouldn't be in their best interest.
