Hawke has giant arms for a mage. And in a more useful note, looks like it's not only the Staff of Parthalan that have a blade.

I believe that that is what we call a "spell."

Got this pic from IGN. Who else thinks that this looks awesome?! I was thinking about being a warrior, but after seeing this pic and some video of mage gameplay, I think I'm gonna be a mage!! Because of the blade on the edge of the staff does this mean u can combine melee attacks with spells?

It has been bothering you, I see. You can make melee attacks, yes. Probably weaker than a Warrior, but it's something.

I'm hoping that primal magic got buffed in damage. It seemed like the only time I ever did a lot of damage with a primal spell was when I got lucky with a chain lightning.

The melee attacks are just a different animation for the basic staff attack; the damage is the same.

@ Dhiro

yea! I feel so much better about being a mage now that I know that a mage can use more than one staff with a blade!

You can still make a second playthrough and be a warrior. Remember that your sibling change depending of your class. Still, I'm happy for you :D

The attacks may be weaker, but I won't matter as much if you get your strength up

Wel... yes. But if you put points in strenght you don't think you will, hm, lack magic power?

I am sure you can find them on youtube. We... can't post them here.

I would Focus on Magic more than Strenght but Focus mainly on Strength, Magic, Willpower more than other traits

If we still gain 3 points per level, I would say your grow would be slow. But it may work. I don't know if the melee staff damage is calculated (this word exist?) by strenght, so good luck.

I think magic determines staff damage, actually. I could be wrong, but Strength is probably of limited use to a mage.

There's hardly any gameplay at all, but you can see Bethany in a few videos.

Magic.

Magic increases damage for all Mage attacks even melee..

Also that is a very nice looking lightning spell..

Found something.

A quote from Peter Thomas: "We're redoing what attributes mean to the player. Every single stat will give a benefit to every character. Something useful. Exact specifics haven't been worked out. Magic, for instance, might give a small Magic Resistance bonus for every point you have. Useful for everyone, if you want it. For the Mage, though, Magic would be their Primary Attribute, giving them additional bonuses because that is what their class is focused on. Currently we're looking at an Attack and Damage bonus based on your class's Primary Attribute, but that could change. Yes, it would be possible to max out only Magic, but you'd have poor Defense, Mana, Health, etc as a penalty. If you party is maximized around keeping the Mage out of danger, it could be viable, though."

Interesting. That means a traditional mage, that uses willpower and magic, would be a melee demon in high levels. Of course, without the proper protections he could die easily... hm, I wonder.

Posted ImagePosted ImageNot if base staff damage is kept low like it was in Origins.

Pretty much.. If someone wants to fight in close combat I recommend adding some strength(fortitude), cunning(defense),  dexterity(critical chance), constitution(health), and a few sustains.

...Q.

Anyway, that's true. I wonder if staffs still never miss, but can't do criticals. If they can miss in melee-mode like any other weapon, that means a melee-mage would have to put point in dextery, no?

Edit: Spirit Healer looks like a good specialization for a melee-mage, then. Quick heals and such. Maybe Force Mage have bonuses, too? I'm not much into melee-mage, but the possibility to play with it is so endearing.
