@Andar91

so....does that mean magic will count for a mage's melee damage with a sword/staff? Could you contact this Peter Thomas guy and find out?

Also, can a mage Hawke do the attack where he/she can tear enemies apart? I saw concept art for it in one of the trailers

It's the finish move of Crushing Prision. If you use it when the enemy is a really low health, hands of ripping doom.

Posted ImagePosted ImageMagic could mean that, but the system may have changed by now.  Peter Thomas is a gameplay designer that sometimes comments on the forums (though not often).  If you want to try and send him a private message, the link to his page is at the bottom of the forum page; click on the name.

The ripping apart thing a mage can do (yes, they can do that) isn't a spell, it's a finishing move.  Have you played Origins?  Moves where a character would use a special animation for a deathblow, such as when a warrior leaps up onto an ogre and stabs them.  Mages now have finishing moves, triggered by spells, that play special animations appropriate to the spell that triggered them.  The spell Crushing Prison brings those hands into being to rip an enemy apart.

although, doesn't summoning Giant Hands to rip/pull you apart seem kind of the opposite of Crushing Prison??

So can anyone provide a link that says that Crushing Prison has that finishing move seen in the trailer? Sorry if I seem skeptical, but I just like to see proof.

Posted ImagePosted ImageI have no idea where the quote is, but I am 100 percent positive that that was confirmed.  Take that as you will.

from what has been mentioned, I believe that the armours in the exagerated sections are top/high level armours, so I would guess closer to the last third of the game?

Are you actually able to use melee attacks with sword/staffs like the staff of panthalan?

yes, once enemies are in melee range you just whack them with the staves

Mage girl here, I play mainly warriors for my first play throughs, but the thought of the possible mage dynamics in this game appealed to me way too much to pass up the chance. Even though a team of mage sisters won't be possible I still look forward to run-ins with templars and sibling rivalry with Carver. Plus I get to use the staff of Parthalan! Woohoo!

in regards to the Ripping Apart finishing move, I believe it was during one of the PAX interviews that one of the devs ( was it Gaider? ) casually mentioned that the move was in the game and was the finisher for Crushing Prison.

that being said, when I watched some of the leaked gameplay vids from the conventions, I did see Bethany do that finisher on the Ogre. However, I'm not 100% certain that it was caused by Crushing Prison. In one case, it looked like she just hit the Ogre with the basic staff blast range attack, and since it was the finishing blow, it triggered the Hand Ripping animation.

now, mind you, that was quite awhile ago, so I could be mistaken. Plus, that was an early build, so who knows what they've changed.

in fact, since then, I haven't seen or heard anything re finishing moves..............

forgot about that, if it's the one where mage Hawke electrocutes the quanari with his staff.

it's in the latest Dev vid about the story.

although it's not clear if that was a cutscene animation or an actual finisher animation that we can trigger in combat.

if we can trigger a finisher like that in combat, that will indeed be very awesome!!

what about with a regular staff. I saw in a gameplay video (one that said it was from Ingroim or something?) and the guy was controling Bethany and fighting darkspawn with the staff up close, and was meleeing them i think. the point is r u able to melee with just a staff up close?
