Is DA2 just trying WAY too hard to look cool and mature?

Again, I'm not complaining about speeding up combat or anything. These over the top animations might look cool at first, but just like the slo-mo deathblows in Origins, after you've seen them 1,000,000 times they get old. And since everything is moving so much faster now, I imagine the novelty of them will wear off even faster still.

Sometimes, less is more. Cue Indiana Jones:

I don't understand what you mean by over the top or flashy... I roundhouse kick no fewer than 10 things every day.

Save the silly rogue animations and blood smear that hasn't been explain. I am actually going to be a radical here and say that save the really moronic marketing, the art direction, story and everything else is completely BioWare.

Now, I could complain all gosh darned day about Hawke and their voiced lines and crap, but that ain't trying to look cool and mature. That's just a change in direction from some guy who missed the point of Origins.

Seems like half the dev team making DA2 missed the point of Origins. A throwback to more classic RPG's like BG.

Oh they understood that, it just became apparent that it was a bad idea.

Your citation of this particular scene is notable as it stands out as being one of the only example of understated simplicity in the entire film.  A part that was originally scripted to be a dramatic, choreographed fight scene that was only called off when Harrison Ford had the runs and couldn't film it.  Awesome indeed, but it doesn't really fit your argument - such as I understand it.

Now if you'll excuse me, my face appears to be melting off because someone decided to open the Ark of the Covenant.

/rest assured, top men at Bioware are working on the game.
//who?

I didn't know Chuck Norris worked for Bioware under a pseudonym.

The blood and gore I don't mind so much.

Rogues turning into ninja acrobats who leap 15 feet backwards while doing a backflip - yea, that bothers me.

Still, nothing I can do about it.

Still, I'm surprised at the lack of "shuffling" comments here - seemed that after that one preview video, it had become the vogue term for describing people's complaints about DAO, and the excuse for the new maniacal ninja-bat system we have now.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait... Origins had a point beyond introducing the Dragon Age franchise? (and, you know, being a cool game) The way I understood it, Dragon Age in general was supposed to recreate cRPGs in this video game generation, not become a carbon copy of it. But hey, that's just my opinion. What do I know?

Did they? Wasn't Origins just that?
DA2, on the other hand, has never been marketed as the "spiritual successor of Baldur's Gate".

lol had the runs? I heard the story was they were waiting for a prop for the scene to ship in and it took too long to arrive, so they simplified the scene. anyway, #lucastrivia

Some day, I'll have to fire up DA:O and leave the companions running on tactics alone, to see this mythical shuffling I never experienced.
Micromanaging through keyboard and mouse does have its perks.

Ignoring most of that, I'm only interested in the tank comment. Err, do you really expect a tank not to take aggro while the dps does its thing? As far back as I can remember in terms of playing RPGs that predated even WoW, it seems to be pretty standard. I certainly don't ever recall trying to tank with my bard in Ultima IV at any rate.

It's more likely the marketing is trying too hard to be cool and mature. Just like it was for the first game.

Eh, I guess you could look at it all that way. Mostly, I was thinking of that scene along the lines of the sword twirler as being DA2's over the top, "Look at me! Look at me!" animations  while Indy is more like my "**** please," Tommy Lee Jones reading newspaper in No Country For Old Men type reaction to seeing most of them.

/fun fact! William Hootkins of "top men" fame also played the valiant Porkins of X wing fighter pilot fame :wizard:

Hardy-har-har. *whips out ancient copy of Bard's Tale for display purposes* Well, to be honest, I can't whip out my copy of Bard's Tale - it vanished many, many years ago. :P

My two cents about this is that I think that we should think about what we are playing here...a fantasy game.  Not a medieval life simulator, a fantasy game.  Set in a fantasy world designed by people who aren't us.  Of course, people's opinions matter, and sharing them is good, just as long as everybody remembers that we can criticize what we don't like and request what we do, but we aren't entitled to demanding what goes in and out of a game we are not designing in a fantasy world we didn't create.

That first paragraph came across as kind of rude...please don't take it as such.

As for the roundhouse kicking of the Miasmic flask, I loved it.  It adds something that I felt Origins lacked greatly in(except for finishers): Animation Flavor.  The idea of a rogue kicking a flask into battle fits the idea of a rogue well.  A soldier would probably be more efficient and "soldier-like" and just throw the thing like a football, but a rogue is the flashy, scoundrel-like, flavor class.  I think animations(like rogues flipping and what not in battle) will help the devs in their goal of trying to seperate the three classes.  Overall, I look forward to watching my rogue fight in DA2.  The only class I actually had fun watching fight in Origins was the mage.  Warrior and Rogue just fought too slowly and stiffly.  These new animations are a step forward in my opinion.

And I can't stress enough how much I looooooooove the "Blood Theme" they have for the Dragon Age franchise.  The blood red splattered across a white background...wow.  I don't know why, but watching that blood dragon fly across the white screen and roar always gets me pumped.

So, all in all, I guess I disagree with the OP.

Now, I know I'm going to get a lot of crap for saying this, but I just needed to share this with the community and see what you think. Am I the only one who thinks that Dragon Age 2 is just trying way too hard to look flashy and exciting and the expense of looking competely ridiculous?

You are not alone. We can only hope they realize the folly of their actions in time for a future edition.

Why can't it just be "this didn't work"? Why does it have to be "oh shi - we're bad people"?

Who's saying they're bad people? its more like they're possibly making terrible design choices. There is a difference you know.

Let's revive the Dunjonquest series for great justice instead

At least the box art looked cool

And it didn't try too hard
