How do you play a druid. What spells do you use and in what combination and order do you use them? What skills and stats do you focus on? Do you multiclass? If so, with what?

Many ways, but shifter is the most common and most effective shapechanger, if you want to melee.  Druid has a very limited weapon/armor selection, so multiclassing is almost imperative if you want to go toe-to-toe. Elven druids get a wider range of weaponry if you choose that race. If you want a pure caster, cleric is far superior, IMO.  The good news is that druid casting is not penalized by armor and/or shields.

What spells do you use and in what combination and order do you use them?

The best druid-specific spells are probably Stonehold (immobilization), Creeping Doom (escalating AoE damage) and Elemental Swarm (serious tanking assistance).  You can mimic a cleric's Harm if you like.  Of course, while morphed spells are not available so bear that in mind.

Shifter, although complicated to get used to is very effective and each form comes with its own repertoire of feats and ability spreads which you need to become accustomed with before planning your build.  The shifted abilities sometime override those of the native character.

Wisdom is the main ability.  For a caster, at least 19 to get all spells and for shifters max it.

A few tertiary classes that work well with a shifter druid are monk and rogue.  You'll need 5 levels in druid to get access to the shifter prestige class.  CoT makes it easier to get dragon form if that is your goal.

On servers without custom alignment managers, it can become problematic to maintain the neutrality of a druid to continue to progress in that class depending on your actions.  Otherwise, it is not a problem.

I have a question to add on here-

Will taking a level of shifter also let the druid animal companion go up a level or is it equal to the number of druid levels you have?

No, but they are all almost useless, only bear has high hit points but except that nothing, so no big loss.

Many shifter builds use high druid levels to get all the sweet druid spells.  For example, you can use Elemental Swarm to summon the best tanks in the game (aside from mercs, that is) and then shift into the chosen form.

Thax's druid guide (as mentioned above) is quite helpful and comprehensive as are the NWNwiki entries for Druid and Shifter which are both improvements over the basic class information furnished in your manual(s). You may be surprised how effective even the lowly wyrmling form is especially at higher shifter levels.

Depending on whether you are venturing into an epic environment or not, the builds offered by the ECB here may be just what the doctor ordered.

Be sure to know the idiosyncracies of the server too - for example, our server allows many enhanced abilities in animal forms - such as winged creatures flying and hiding in trees, canines scent tracking, felines jumping, etc.. These kinds of extended animal powers can make a huge difference, depending on usage and the module build of course.

Be well. Game on.

yes shifters are nice but true druids gain more options for forms on the server with special skills of their own
