Did you also know that it is also possible to make a wider variety of good friends in a decade?

Clearly. That's why those six are the main suspects in Cassandra's investigation.

I sort of doubt that's Sebastian.  Yeah, it looks like him, but as a DLC character it would be kinda wrong to flount him around in people's faces who DON'T have him, since he is technically optional.  I know most of the fans will have him anyway, but I don't think they'd risk confusing the rest of the players by making them say "Who the hell is this guy?"

Plus it wouldn't make any sense for him to be there at all if you don't have the DLC, since obviously he wouldn't know Hawke.

I guess, but did you know that it's hard to make 15 or so deep and interesting companions? Quality over quantity.

Well, we can summon a mabari. The dog won't be a permanent companion.

Who says they have to be as deep as the six or seven others? What of Tamlen, Jowan, Lily, Ser Gilmore, Gorim, Leske? They were companions, if only for a little while. Who's to say that we won't have a few more like them?

Nice try, except that this is most likely Varric's book, since he's the one reading from it and telling the story. It also looks pretty expensive, so it would be pretty silly of Cassandra to stab her own, took-years-to-write-draw-and-bind, one of a kind book with a sharp dagger.

It was more than a nice try, darling. It was straight from a developer.

Those are a list of Cassandra's suspects. Not necessarily Hawke's best buddies. Isabela has an important role to play in the story, even if you never meet her. You just won't find out the answer to a particular question at a certain time if you don't.

I think those are the six main characters that will stay with Hawke for the 10 years. Obviously, Hawke will make more than 6 friends over such a long time span and you'll get temporary companions filling in. But then when there's a time jump, those companions will probably have to stay in their own time period. You may still meet these people as npcs in the future, but they won't be in your party anymore.

At least that's how I think it'll work.

There are probably companions not on that page, but I suspect everyone there is a companion.

@bluewolv1970 - you should probably change that last person you mentioned since they are the secret character. it's a spoiler for people who haven't played or haven't finished DAO.

Have the devs said that Bethany and Carver are permanent companions yet ? and who do you think the person between Isabela and Merrill is ?

They haven't commented on that, no. The person between Isabela and Merrill is Varric.

That the one guy no one knows about isn't a companion. Remember, its a list of Cassandra's top suspects.

I figure one of them isn't a squaddie. Its just a guess.

I would bet there's at least one or more companions not on that list. There could certainly be characters you meet after, or that just aren't central to the same story.

I'd like that. I love deep interactions with companions, but I also like bit players like those in Witch Hunt or Leliana's Song. I wouldn't at all mind having companions who are specific to certain times of Hawke's life for whatever reason.

Of course, I'd also like interactions with NPCs as deep as the ones with the companions. It makes a lot of sense for the Warden to be limited to having deep relationships with only the handful of people he's traveling with, but the ten years in a set location seems to me to provide a great opportunity to have deep interactions with characters who aren't necessarily up to beating down baddies at Hawke's side. We've already got a hint of that in Hawke's mother; I'd be a little surprised if she's the only one.

Keep in mind that the illustrations in Varric's book are not perfect representations of what the characters actually look like in-game. Note the dark collar with a light edge in both of the pictures. I think it's safe to say that they are the same people.

Orsino?
