Morrigan is the name of the Irish goddess of war and death, so eh. As for Leiliana, congrats. Hardly any one will catch the reference by the time she's old enough for it to matter and it's a nice name.

We gave our daughter a non-video game name, but we did arrange things so that her initials are RPG. It's a subtle form of nerdery that has a tiny footprint. She can always say that we really liked rocket propelled grenades if she ends up hating games.

That's sweet.

I wonder if anyone would get the urge to name their daughter 'Morrigan' now. XD

Actually I remember one of the devs at PAX talking about how he met someone who named his two daughters Leliana and Morrigan.

I think Leliana is a lovely name, and I don't see why it should matter where it came from. Congrats, OP.

That's quite awesome.  I think both names are lovely (even if 'Morrigan' was a Celtic goddess of war and death).

That's quite awesome.  I think both names are lovely (even if especially because 'Morrigan' was a Celtic goddess of war and death).

I agree, but I had to fix the above. :)

To people who think this is weird - how is it different from naming your child after a character in the book? Plus Bioware did not invent the name Leliana, it existed before.

Dragon Age gave me an idea for a child's name, too. See, I'm from a central asian country and my bf is Scotish, so we need a name that both our relatives could pronounce. So, I was thinking I could name my future son, if/when I have him, Alistair. It's a Scottish name, but for short we could call him Ali, which then becomes a perfect name for my family to use. :D

edit:

Leliana is a lovely name, and the story is very romantic. I don't think she'll mind being named after a video game character once she finds out how special the name is for both you and your wife. Congratulations to you both!

Who cares about the "origin" of a name (pun intended) ? Those who criticize should watch this :

Also adding for the kids who think weird names are a recent thing that only they have had to deal with ...

Do you know what Thomas Edison named his kids? "Dot" and "Dash"

(And if you don't know why that is funny in a Geek Cred sort of way ... )

I was about to face palm and go "oh dead god"
until I read about the E3 booth..which not only legitmized the name, but
made it awesome....plus its a good name.

Hmm
well congratulations...but am I the only one here who thinks naming
their child after a video-game character is a bad idea ?

Normally I would agree with you but its just legitimate enough to be proper....its not like the name is zelda (the character or samus.

I told my stepbrothers, and this is how the conversation ensued.

Me- "Guys, check out this story, although its sort of related to Dragon Age so Denny, you probably won't freak over this. This guy met this booth babe(just go with it) at E3 a long while back, they fell in love, got married, he got her pregnant with a baby girl, and because they met at E3 and are gamers, guess what their kid is called?"

Dennis- "360!?"

Me- "Hilarious, but no."

Dennis- "BLACK OPS!?"

Me- "Even more hilarious, but no."

Derick- "What, Leliana?"

Me- "YEAH!"

Derick- "Holy *expletive* that is friggen cool!"

Me- "I know right? Hey, she has a beautiful name."

Derick- "Definitely, that is awesome."

Dennis- "You know, that little girl is going to grow up to be a beautiful model, and then when people talk about her parents, she's gonna be like, "Ugh, NERDS."

All three of us LOL'D.

Congratulations! If I had kids some of the names would be Morrigan, Sketch, Varric, Aveline, Garrus, Jacqueline (Jack)... Leliana is a very sweet name ^^
