I have a new fic, and since it's entirely seperate from Apostates of Amaranthine and all things Maggie-related I figured a new thread was in order...

I really wanted to do a fic with Jowan since I think he's a fascinating character and a lot more complex than most people give him credit for. But... I didn't want to go the usual Jowan/f!Mage route. I wanted to see him out on his own, without that past baggage following him everywhere. And then it came to... well, what origin would even give a blood mage the time of day? Since really, it seems like the mage Warden only would by virtue of their existing relationship. And then I realized... who is the least likely to know much about magic, understand Chantry regulations, and actually care even if someone explained it to them? So I finally have gave me a chance to explore the casteless dwarf origin, which is probably my favorite origin in the game outside of the mages.

Ohhh... New stuffs! Jowan has a thing for redheads huh? :P

Good logic flow on what other origin would accept Jowan without issue, though I think a Dalish just might as well, though in that instance it would have to go against the distrust to near hatred toward 'shemlen' apparently all Dalish get taught from the time they're able to understand words.

I just can't get into the Dalish origin. I've tried, I've even downloaded the dalish mage mod, but... nah. It just seems like the origin is set up to make you rp the character as a bigot.

And redheads... well, I couldn't think of any reason he would have given lily a second glance otherwise. She's as exciting as an unsalted ******. ;) Plus, it was less creepy than a chantry fetish. ;)

(and, speaking as a redhead, it's surprisingly common. Even if your hair color is from a box of henna like mine. I don't get it. But I'll enjoy the free drinks it nets me.)

Hmm. I was roughly the opposite. Could never get into a mage until I got the Dalish Mage mod, and my first complete game was a dalish rogue. Though I didn't quite run her as a bigot, she was a lot more 'disconnected' with the events occurring then any other origin.

/agree with regards to Lily, didn't really think much of her in my first run to get the mage origin badge, thought even less later. By the time you put out Blue Skies and I put a dedicated tower mage run she really couldn't've got any lower anyways.

I really don't get Lily's appeal. Every time I replay mage origin I get it even less... I think half of Jowan's bad reputation is because people figure he had to be desperate to go for her.

The dalish does feel the most disconnected. Even the dwarf origins will at least have that connection of having lost so much to the darkspawn. the dalish feels like even more of an outsider.

I really don't see what's so bad about Lily. Yes, her getting involved with Jowan was a mistake for both of them (and she isn't even supposed to get involved with anyone) but what is it that people don't like besides that? Rejecting him when she found out he was a blood mage? Though I think she kind of overreacted, I do try to keep in mind that she's spent years with the Chantry and blood magic appears to be the worst sin you could possibly commit. Once she found out that Jowan wasn't an innocent victim but actually HAD learned blood magic like he was being accused of, she accepted her punishment and Jowan's the one who just took off and left her (and you) to face the music alone after Lily instinctively rejected him. Maybe she's not the prettiest character but a lot of characters that are supposed to be pretty (like all young female elves) aren't really in actuality.

In fact, if I had to pick a victim in that relationship it would be Lily. Yes, she knowingly gets involved with him when she's not allowed to and plots to break him out so she's not entirely a victim but he's the one who leads her to believe that he's not a blood mage despite the fact that he clearly knows or at least suspects how she feels about that or he wouldn't have felt the need to lie to her. I think a RL equivalent would be telling your girlfriend that you were going to be arrested after being framed for murder and she helps you escape the police and it turns out that you did it after all. She would have still helped you escape but she had been operating under false pretences. I don't think that knowing blood magic in and of itself is equivalent to murder, of course, but to the Chantry it seems to be worse.

I do agree she was the victim in the relationship. She really got the shaft, and I was glad when they re-described Aeonar so it wasn't so much a prison as just a place they would keep her briefly to prove she wasn't possessed.

She got on my bad side during the part where you're going through the archive and reacted with an "omg evil!" attitude to everything. The statue was creepy, yes (although she urged everyone away from it before it spoke), but also the staff (if you don't find it Jowan will point it out to you and she'll comment that the Circle must have had a reason to lock it away) and the stone wolf statue you ultimately use to get into the philanthropy chamber. It just struck me as odd that she seemed to be very much in line with the Chantry on pretty much everything but was planning to run off with a mage. (I've seen some people suggest she was a Chantry plant to catch Jowan since really, how would some Initiate be allowed anywhere near the "blood mages we're making tranquil against their will" list? I think that's going a bit too far, though.)

But just as a character I found her pretty flat compared to some of the other origin characters. And I know Jowan is the main Origin companion, but compared to some of the other secondary origin characters like Kalah and Rica Brosca, the Aeducan brothers, the dalish storyteller, shianni, etc she's really, well, blank. I thought Old Sweeney and Niall were more interesting and they only had a few lines each. It could be a failure on Bioware's part to really develop her character enough, or maybe she really is supposed to be that utterly boring of a person. But since they did more to build up characters who don't spend half the origin following you I'm thinking it was at least somewhat intentional.

It is kind of sad when a Tranquil is more interesting to talk to, isn't it? Posted Image

Yeah, that's probably the biggest 'failing' of Lily. She wasn't particularly developed as a character to much. The most I ever got out of her was when I was asking Jowan why he never asked me out. Otherwise she pretty much just followed Jowan and I around like the Mage version of Dog (yes, I know it's an unfair comparison) while spouting lines of Chantry dogma.

So I see her either as a hypocrite regarding mages and magic, weak willed to be lead by Jowan then Greagor, or schizophrenic.

You know? "Ugh, not Lily. Let's go see if Owain got a new shipment or something."

Edit
@Liliandra: That's it exactly. She's like a 100% pro chantry character. And then she's bangin' a mage. Does not compute.
I will say Sif is going to have a very different take on things than Maggie did once she finds out.
