If people are going to count multiple outfits that are recolors and slight modifications as all one outfit, then DAO only had like six outfits in the whole game. So, again, by the complainer's standard, not mine, DA2 has DAO beat in the appearance diversity department.
I don't see why we can't have the unique outfits but be able to equip other stuff as well, like Morrigan's robe in DA:O. I'm sure I'm not the first to suggest this. I guess it's because of the different character models? But why not make those a feature of the outfits? Will we be able to see that Aveline is a bit bulkier when she's wearing heavy plate anyway?
This is one of two concerns about DA2, the other being the anime-like slashes of the weapons.
Pretty sure the technical/resources reason is they'd have to make a version of every single armor in the game for every body type and animation, which means probably about five times less appearances overall. A possible story/artistic reason could be because they are individual companions and not you. I don't change the outfits of my coworkers, nor do I even change the outfits of other players when playing a tabletop RPG. Aveline would wear her platemail uniform after she becomes a member of the Kirkwall guard, and wouldn't change into Isabella's outfit just because Hawke tells her to. The outfits they wear are the outfits that best fit their personality, role, and combat style. Hawke is you, however, and you'll have full customization.
You're probably right. I just think a lot of people see it either as DA:O or ME2, and no middle ground.
Anyway, this system could work if there's enough variety in the outfits and a good selection for each character. My ideal system would be if you looted or bought them. Like, for example, you find a set of light dwarven armour in an abandoned thaig that Varric could wear, or a set of templar plate that is equippable on Aveline. Like a whole set of Morrigan-type outfits for each character. I also can't see the reason why we can't equip gloves and boots, even if you can't see them on the paper doll. Again, like Morrigan's robes or the rest of the mage robes.
