Okay, so I just started playing a new game as an Engineer (the first time ever, and the first time not importing a ME1 character) and I noticed that GSB also does not have a cast animation as I see it, unless the 'tech arm' flair up counts as an 'animation.'

If this is true, wouldn't this really make Improved GSB the superior choice (compared to the other non-class armors) as you are literally getting more bang from your buck? Even if you may play a non-tech class?

Yeah, I think Improved GSB is the way to go if you want a shield power, assuming you don't mind tech skill on a biotic.

Improved GSB grants the 10% extra weapon damage does it not? And yeah GSB does have an animation which in some cases can mean a 'mission failure' thanks to that one second to activate it.

Barrier is better in this regard as it has no animation whatsoever and can even be activated if Shep is stunlocked (flamethrowers etc.) granted it has no evolved buff like GSB does in terms of boosting another stat but it does look cool especially if you're playing a biotic and GSB also looks cool on techies.

Does GSB have an animation? I seem to recall it doesn't but it's been a long time.

I prefer the GSB look to the biotic one and it sure is fun teleporting around a battlefield with your geth overclocked shields and shotgun designed for a krogan :)

Yes, Shep whips out his/her omni tool during activation.  It also has a slight shimmer as it goes up.

I'd say GSB is fine, unless you're crazy hardcore CQB.  That extra second can mean life or death.

GSB cannot be activated when Shep is stunned - it does have some sort of animation. Only Barrier will always work and therefore is the 'best' out of the 3 armor powers (GSB, Fortification and Barrier).

GSB is nice early game. You can get the tech cd reduction upgrade really fast.

I use GSB on my Engineer. It is awesome. It could be replaced by medigel, but for me it makes no sense for medigel to replenish my shields.

GSB do have an animation, but, it doesn't interfere when firing, so it's no problem at all.

To make things clear, if you use GSB while firing, your shield is replanished but the animation is not played.

That and depending on how crazy the situation is that you've managed to get yourself in not getting the extra shields GSB provides over medi-gel can get you killed as well. I've tried replacing shield powers with medi-gel several times and the same thing always happens. It works wonderfully for a missions, it inevitably gets me killed, and I go crawling back to a shield power.

And medi gel is limited, a shield power let us regenerate our shied lot more often than exist medi gel in the game.

Personnaly i prefer to keep it for for a dead squad mate or when i'm in big trouble but in cover, every time i tried tu use medi gel in the middle of a fight and undercover, i died, i would say i got killed 4 times out of 5 in this situation.

By the way, the +10% weapon damage last one minute or just until the replenished shield is still here?

Geth Shield Boost isn't bad bonus power. It helps replenish shields asap and has rescued my life on insanity many times during my few walthroughs (soldier). This power especially helps soldier against harbinger with his other collector vermin. Although I have found 5 months ago that defensive bonus power is somehow a waste of skill points.

Here is my point, you can buy a chestlpate reducing shield regeneration time by 10%, if you like you can also use the helmet reducing that time again by 10% (i don't like it though) and use life support webbing. This way you can wait in cover a little bit, then pop out and keep spraying on enemies using assault rifle or precisely using strong sniper rifle with adrenaline rush. As a bonus power you could select, e.g. Neural Shock (which delivers great damage for shields&barriers with 3 sec recharge) or Slam which would be a perfect anti-husk power or to kick out shadow brokers troops on hull of his ship.

The whole point of GSB is that you do not have to / can't take cover.

GSB, tech armour and friends take 12s to recharge. I doubt that Shepard's shields last for 12s on higher difficulty when in the open.
Edit: Never mind that you can't use any interesting powers (AR, cloak, charge) whilst you wait for Shepard's powers to recharge. Isn't shared cooldown fun?

12 second is base cooldown.

Tech upgrade -20%, class passive -15% and suddenly it's 12*0,65=7,8s.

It restores your shields and you can keep fighting or run away. It gives you at least 4 extra seconds. Might not seem that good, but it is really good for close combat Engineer.

And global cooldown is awesome.

Obviously you can't just stand in the open and become invincible by using GSB etc. over and over. However, they can give you some extra time to get to a safer position or finish enemies off.
