Well, to be honest half the criticisms I have now of ME1 I genuinely didn't think of - not actively - until I played ME2.

But do you think of all the things you loved about ME1 and now say "Hold on, that was actually rubbish!" I suspect not. The story and the characters were standout features in DAO and every review I've read says as much. Now the same publications and writers are saying the story wasn't that good and the characters lacked depth. It's bull.

Surely its all relative, though. For example, I could still like the character development in ME1, while acknowledging that I believed the development in ME2 to be superior, and that fresh perspective makes me see ME1s characters as less-well-developed than I did at the time. Hence I criticise them.

But you've played ME2 in its entirety and gotten to know all of its characters. That's the difference. These journalists only got a few hours with the game. They're just trying to put Origins down to build II up.

Rubbish? No. But I'm replaying ME1 now, and I'm amazed at how bad it looks after ME2. Not just the combat and inventory systems, but conversation implementation too -- the clunkiness of the way the game handles asking questions shocked me.

OTOH, those weren't the things I loved about ME1 in the first place.

The way firearms and inventory worked?  Yes, actually.

But what AlanC9 says is important:  The things I view now as "ugh, rubbish" weren' the things about ME1 that I really liked anyway.

What ME1->ME2 taught me was that the former's attempt to meld RPG mechanics and TPS mechanics in a twitch based game failed.  An example that didn't fail?  VATS in Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

DAO's story wasn't reactive.  You had choices, but never really experienced the consequences.  You read about them when the game ended.  That isn't to say the story wasn't good, but it could be better.  I think it will be.

Who's actually saying that, anyway? Nothing of the sort in the previews this thread is about.

Eh.  I'll say the one good thing from the preview is that the new rogue outfit design is nice and it's about time we got one to look like that.

That said, these previews are rather shoddy to read through.  Not only are they basically rehashing what we already know, they trash Originswhile they're at it and basically affirm that, even though they played the game and I haven't, at best their opinion doesn't mesh with my own and at worst it's a cheap marketing ploy.  Either way, it makes me more prone to ignore their actual opinion.

As well, the screenshots and the quality of graphics.  Yeah, there are some shots out there which look fantastic.  There are just as many which look mediocre, unfortunately.  Considering  they're actually trying to market the game to us, that's not especially promising.  Frankly, between the weak textures and spikey, blocky style I have, and believe I will have, found Origins to be overall graphically superior.

The blocky style is fine. It doesn't look distracting or out of place at all.

All Bioware needs to do now is clean up the game's textures and it should be good to go.

Sorry if this has already been confirmed, but does that picture of rogue hawke mean that high ranking armors will be filtered in a glorious monotone magenta colour like in DA:O?

PC Gamer criticised the story and X-Box Magazine or PS Magazine(can't remember which) said the characters were undefined.

I don't care what the previewers say about the game, they were doing the same thing when Origins was about to come out, saying it wasn't a true RPG, or that it could never live up to BG2.

I played a rogue in Origins and I'll play one in DA2. I really loved the abilities of the rogue, and some of the armor and weapons were great. The only thing I hope for in this coming game are more rogue attacks, like Pinpoint Strike, Riposte, and Punisher. Also I *really* hope they'll add some of the attack moves from Awakening, like Heartseeker. I could take out an armored Darkspawn with one stealthed backstab with that one.

Mike Laidlaw once said that we'd have different materials (=colors) to choose from for armors and weapons and that they were now unrelated to item tiering. But don't expect me to dig that quote as it could be just about anywhere in this forum.
Also I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with the colors in that screenshot.

Ah, another preview. Thank you OP for the link.

Once again, it proves to me that game review sites must enlist chimpanzees from the local zoos to write their previews of upcoming titles. Actually no, chimps would likely make better observations.

The accuracy of previews matter less to game sites than the reviews because customers aren't as likely to hold them accountable for false information if they buy the game and don't like it.  However, the previews themselves are immensely important to the game sites because... well, it's just about all they got.  They probably do three previews for every review.  And if they write bad stuff before the game is released and kill the almighty hype machine, the developer/distributor will never invite them back because there will always be dozens of more sites out there dying to give the information to the people and get as many advertising dollars as they can.  In the end, it's a pretty obvious conflict of interests coupled with the fact that gamers seem to be some of the dumbest (not IQ related) consumers in the history of the world.  The fact that all of the previews have said almost word for word the exact same thing AND there hasn't been a single preview that was even SLIGHTLY critical makes me think that the game press is a complete scam.  Well, I've thought that for a while, but this only adds fuel to the fire so to speak.
