Oh snap, it's Shepard's delusional memory again, melding Kaidan with Jenkins and giving us Kaiden, the good kid who was the only other marine with Shepard on Eden Prime that day until they met up with Ashley.fortunesque wrote...
Kaiden is a 'good kid' with a good heart that is a young man headed up the ranks. He certainly isn't older than Shepard and he certainly isn't one rank below Shepard. Kaiden's alternate reality form is named "Richard L. Jenkins".
Poor Sheppard... he's forgetting everything and soon he'll forget how to spell his name.

Except for, you know, none of the characters look like themselves. I mean, Jesus, what the hell happened to poor Wrex?

For as much as I enjoy taking the mickey out of the comic at the moment, I don't suppose that I can really judge its effectiveness in providing newcomers with a sense of the first game because it will hopelessly pale in comparison to my having actually played the first game. I simply have to ask newcomers what they thought, much as I did for those who played Mass Effect 2 without ever having played the first game. Based on that experience, Mass Effect 2's default game played remarkably well if you didn't have any prior knowledge of what you were missing. But then those players would get the first game and suddenly they were all "why was all this stuff missing?!"MarchWaltz wrote...
....This comic got me depressed. It could possibly mean all the small choices, yet fun choices, we made in ME1 got the boot.

It was cool hearing what it was like for Shepard to be physically seized by the beacon, though.

I don't have a problem with it for being so compressed. I have a problem with it being unecessarily compressed (i.e. "Hey, let's not even mention the geth at all!") and getting fundamental facts completely wrong. When you consider that the Codex will subsequently contradict a number of the comic's "facts" once people get into the game (unless they rewrote those too) it's just going to confuse PS3 newbies about what the hell actually happened. And we're also going to be stuck with disabusing all those folk who won't read the Codex (or watch Let's Plays of ME1 on Youtube) and will just accept the comic's f*cked-up version of events.

yes. which is weird because u can remake that decision on the cerberus vessel
They only did that because of the way the import save worked in ME1: it made an autosave right before the choice, and then a final one after the credits. If you skipped the credits, your Councilor choice was lost, so they added that question for those saves that didn't have it recorded. It won't come up if the flag is present.
oO I didn't know that.
BTW the comic was alright, and genius in terms of BioWare's sales. This is incentive for PS3 players to buy ME1 (and possibly ME2, 3) on the PC once they get a taste of ME2 as they can't do a lot of sidequest decisions (saving Fist, Shiala, that asari on Virmire, STG, that one woman-gangsta on the citadel you meet on Omega again, etc.) this way.
They are missing out on a lot of background which is unfortunate. I wonder now if PS3 users new to ME will appreciate the codex entries? You don't really 'learn' a lot about the other races in ME2 like you do in ME1 (e.g. meeting the elcor, volus ambassadors on the citadel, humanity's place, etc.).
Also, is there a Femshep version of the comic?

Yeah, turns out it doesn't do that on the PC. I've set the Councilor choice in the save editor, though, and it will skip that question in that case. I'm curious if it actually works right on the 360 now.

I'm probably in the minority but did any one think Shepard came across as a massive douche bag?
They'll probably make her so unappealing that the PS3 players will give up on FemShep and play Sheploo. I know their tricks!! Hell, she'll probably be a damsel in distress that gets saved by Kaiden if marketing has sunk their paws into it.

(Then again, I'm supposed to be one of those that liked the Mako. Hm.)
I'm actually rather curious what the Female Shepard version is like - whether it'll maintain the detached deadpan or not.
As for itself.. It works, I think, as a sort of summary. Some of the art is.. strange (Wrex, what have they done to you?!) and some of the omissions seem glaring when compared to Mass Effect 1 itself, but thinking about it.. most of them don't seem too critical, I suppose. Other than the no mention of geth that others have mentioned, that might make most of the Geth hooks come right out of the blue. But otherwise, Feros, the conduit, the exact nature of the citadel.. in retrospect, they don't seem too relevant in the context of Mass Effect 2.

It'll probably be the exact same lines that mShep had, down to the descriptions of Liara being hot and Kaidan being a 'good kid'.

WOW. Incomplete much?
No mention of Nihlus. No mention of him being murdered by Saren. No mention of the Geth. No mention of Shepard having been selected as a candidate for the Spectres.
^These are just some of what was left out from the Eden Prime chapter!
No mention of Fist. No mention of Harkin. No mention of the Consort.
^These are some of the things left out of the Citadel chapter.
Yeah, I really hope Bioware doesn't try to accommodate the PS3 players' lack of knowledge about certain parts of ME1 by ignoring them/retconning them in ME3. Although I wouldn't blame them for leaving these points out of the comic for the sake of "trimming" it down to a manageable length, it still worries me that ME3 will suffer because of it.
Let's hope that Bioware remembers the very large majority of it's ME fans have played ME1, and are expecting ME3 to be a conclusion to ME1, not to ME2.
Edit: Let me be clear that I UNDERSTAND and EXPECTED the comic to be
trimmed down as such; it'll serve as a great introduction to ME2. But,
you have to admit, anyone who has played through ME1 and knows the story
would be disappointed by how very little is carried over to the comic.
It's like a film adaptation of a long book, IMO.
With that out of the way, I wanna congratulate Bioware on presenting PS3 players with a stylish and
effective substitute for ME1. It looks good. Even though it's definitely
no substitute for gamers who have access to the first game. ME1 FTW!

. The comic isn't horrible...yet I dislike the constant shirking of Ashley and Kaidan. How can they even compare as a romance after Liara is described the way she is?.
Kaidan and Ashley do get their little encomiums too, when they're introduced during the Eden Prime segment, just like Liara gets hers when she's introduced. The problem is they put the romance choice right after Liara's intro.

Yes, this is a huge concern of mine too. There's also no mention of Cerberus and background info on them, which would help the player understand why people are mistrustful of Shep for being with Cerberus.
I understand that a cursory glance is required, but they left out important things.

I actually did show it to 3 people who haven't played ME1, and 2 wanted to try ME2 on PS3.
They all kind of shrugged it off and said it was pretty uninteresting and really poorly written. They also hated the VO, lol. It put them off bad enough that now the two who were wanting to get it on PS3 are reconsidering it, and thinking about doing as they were going to before and wait until they can upgrade their PC and actually play ME1, heh.
But really, there are huge gaps in story, a lot of details for important choices left out, and a lot of inconsistency that will show through in ME2 for even the new people coming in. The whole thing made me cringe.
And towards the end, Tali and Garrus, both duel welding pistols, Garrus flying through the air shooting lasers?? Crazy......

Meh. It may not be awesome, but it's better than simply giving the PS3 folks one (sort of depressing) default Shep. The main issue seems to be that the choices don't seem to be all that meningful (since you hardly know why ÿou should care)... or even necessarily true to the game.
Agreed. If the PS3ers are perplexed by it, they can go watch an ME1 playthrough on Youtube.
Still, I think Bioware should treat ME3 as a conclusion to the FULL ME1 package, and not be tripping over themselves trying to accommodate the less-informed PS3 gamers who have only the comic to go by. I mean, really, I think it would damage the faith of the fans SEVERELY if they did cut back on some plot points because of the comic, and I know they know this... but it's still kind of worrisome.

What's the total length of the comic? Give or take ~16 minutes of a game that takes at least ~29 hours?
I wonder how other events would be affected going into ME3 for PS3 gamers?
