Later you talk to Eamon and if you ask why Alistair is still with you and not in protection Eamon states Alistair insists on gathering your allies. So you are told that Alistair DID man up and IS helping, just not in party.

The game is bugged and doesn't recognize that Alistair isn't in the party anymore. Eamon gives the exact same dialogue if Alistair is chosen over Loghain when you arrive at Redcliffe.

This is why I don't read VO notes. I heard no dissapointment in Alistair's voice after Loghain sacrificed himself. He was quite amicable and friendly. If you want to go by the VO notes then take it up with Steve Valentine. He's the one who read the lines. I'm comfortable with what I heard.

And yes I know that Eamon says the same thing if Alistair is with you - but it still counts. Is every instance where an NPCs response is "the same" a bug? No.

Alistair is quite grudging when he says he supposes Loghain did something useful for once. He doesn't really sound that happy to me.

Does make extraordinary sense that ejoslin would put them back in for us though!

Ejoslin, you are a gentleman and a scholar. My thanks. Going to go and install your fixes, lovely modder.

/does a quadruple take.  someone said this to me in a completely unrelated forum a few months back.  You don't by chance own a Cowon J3, do you?

and *grin*  enjoy it! Be warned, the fix to Loghain is an optional file, not part of the main mod.

If the VO notes indicate that Alistair wants nothing to do with you (even if in the future he may come around and you'll be the bestest friends ever) then that's what he's supposed to be regardless of how you think SV might have sounded. Even his dialogue sounds rather awkward like 'Well, Loghain's dead at least and the Blight's over so Duncan should be happy.' He doesn't apologize, you don't apologize, he doesn't make any overtures...his dialogue really gives no indication that he's ready to forget what happened and given that he stormed off and missed the entire end of the Blight I don't see him just never mentioning it and instantly resuming friendship with the Warden. I'm not saying that he never could but that's kind of too soon. Besides, what kind of consequence is losing Alistair by sparing Loghain if it's for all of a month or so before Loghain heroically sacrifices himself and is remembered not as a traitor but as one of the biggest heroes ever after which Alistiar instantly forgives you?

And yes I know that Eamon says the same thing if Alistair is with you - but it still counts. Is every instance where an NPCs response is "the same" a bug? No.

No, but there are some cases where they are, in fact, bugs. If you don't make Alistair king then he will still call himself king, for instance. Are we to assume that this means he's arranged to marry Anora behind your back? Aside from one bugged line, we have no indication that Alistair is there at all. He's certainly not there for the important dialogues. If he were in the room, he'd be present. Is he hiding from you? What would be the point of him being there at all then? Alistair could, as king, still end up fighting in Denerim but the line is still a glitch as Alistair is far too angry to discuss his plans with you post-Landsmeet and he's not at Eamon's estate so you can't know that he's not planning on staying safe.

I guess I don't need to post anything else on this thread because I'm not budging on my position, and I'm not going to write a book or consult VO notes to try and change others'. I stand by my original post to the original poster.

Not angry - just don't see the point of debating it with people who I know are as invested in the game as I once was and thus their PoVs firmly entrenched.  Especially Sarah - I've read enough of your material to know that you aren't budging on this.

Thanks to every single one of you.  I think this was the 1st thread I've been in where everyone had value-add.  My views are honestly shifting based on your insight.  In appreciation, I'm just sharing how I'm seeing this differently:

I should have spent more time with Loghain

I did rush to the Final Battle.  It seemed appropriate at the time.  Thus, I had only 1 conversation with Loghain.  But considering the hike to Red Cliffe and back, I should have checked out Loghain's Camp conversations.

My expectations for Loghain were probably too high

Instead of just criticising post-Landsmeet Loghain, I considered what I could have done better.  Fact was, I couldn't think of much.  Oddly, I think I would have respected him more if he was more defiant.

And he may have been, had I talked to him a bit more.  I started a new playthrough and I'll see soon enough.  I just wanted to be clear that by Landsmeet, I didn't see Loghain as a bad guy, but that he just had different views.

Loghain addressing the troops

This was a very interesting idea.  I know many of you would consider this inappropriate since the whole Landsmeet was about overthrowing Loghain to unite Ferelden, but I like this idea personally.

To start with, what convinced me to spare Loghain was Warden Riordan's point that he's worth having due to his experience as a general.  I kept him around for his leadership and for the loyalty of his followers.

I also realise his credibility was pretty much shattered at Landsmeet.  Despite that, or because of it, he might actually be more convincing if he admited his mistakes, restoring his integrity by supporting the Warden now.

I spared Loghain because that my Warden did throughout the whole game - no killing unless necessary ie spared Avernus, spared the bandit in Lothering, the blood mage in the Tower, Zevran etc.

I wasn't gonna chuck that away coz Alistair threw a hissy fit.

I play the same way with my canon warden, except... I can never bring myself to spare the bandits in Lothering! I don't know, there's something about their leader that I find INCREDIBLY irritating and well... off with his head! :police:
