I have a couple relatives / friends who haven't experienced the original Mass Effect story and are diving into Mass Effect 2 "blind", or just with aid of the new interactive comic.

Feeling saddened that they're missing out on a huge part of the Mass Effect story (and the comic, while nice, won't do it justice)... I decided to share my story focused playthrough video series of Mass Effect 1 on youtube.

There's countless ME1 playthroughs already on youtube... but I've checked and all of them either have annoying narration over the the video, is filled with dozens of hours of mind numbing, boring gameplay mechanics or is in very poor video quality.

I wanted to make a more focused version that emphasizes the story and character relations / development ... the stuff that make Mass Effect so great.... so I've edited out pretty much 95%+ of combat and ALL gameplay related stuff (inventory, leveling-up, surveying, aimless walking, etc)... I also edited out most side missions that I felt weren't important, or didn't add to the development of Shepard as a character (some good ones were included though, if their stories were good).

I thought Id share it with the community here if they're going to be getting ME2 on Ps3 and haven't had the joy of experiencing the original Mass Effect story & characters.

Episode 1 starts here: www.youtube.com/watch

My YouTube Channel is here for the rest of the episodes: www.youtube.com/Hathur99

I know 99% of the people here likely have no interest in this since they've played ME1, but I figured I'd share my little project  that I started for my family and friends with the community here too, just incase some of the PS3 players want to see it.

EDIT: Update Jan. 18:

I am very happy to report that the final episode (Episode 41) is now fully uploaded and processed. The final video clocks in at 31 minutes, but that includes some 8-9 minutes of the game's end credits (and the excellent music that goes with it). I simply did not have the heart to split it into more manageable 15 minute chunks like my other videos.. doing so would have damaged the dramatic impact.

The ending to Mass Effect is a beautiful thing... a genuinely memorable experience.. I encourage any watching it to do so at the HD settings... don't watch a pixelated version of this amazing ending [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/smile.png[/smilie]

This little side project of mine turned into quite a labor of love over the past 2 months or so... in the process, I've taken a game that I'd already played through literally dozens of times over and through this single project, re-experienced the game perhaps 4-6 times more due to all the editing, selecting scenes to include, rewatching the compressed video prior to upload to ensure there were no errors (handling FRAPS' mess of recorded AVI files can get.. messy.. and lead to sloppy editing if one isn't careful).

One thing still rings true even after all these countless times now that I've watched Mass Effect 1..... I STILL am not tired of the experience - the scenes.... I can watch the ending, Virmire and so many other parts of the story over and over and still get a lump in my throat from the dramatic impact.... the ending alone, I've watched perhaps 5 times in the past 2 days throughout editing, etc... and it still swells my heart every time [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/crying.png[/smilie]

So to all who have played ME1 already, I still encourage you to try a viewing of select episodes, if just to relive fond memories of this outstanding story... and to those who have gotten ME2 on their PS3 and have only experienced the simple comic version of ME1, I heartily encourage you to take a trip through these episodes and experience the story the 2nd best way you possibly can (playing it being the first.. though I'd like to think my project does ME1 fair justice).

Thanks and I hope a few of you enjoy this humble little project of mine - feel free to hit the link in my sig to visit my youtube channel and enjoy the episodes... it was a helluva memorable trip to work on in my spare time[smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/grin.png[/smilie]

This is great man, the best way to recap ME1 is to actually watch the game in action. The comic seriously cut out so much stuff, but what can you expect from a 15 minute comic.

This (and pretty much any ME1 footage) easily beats that sh++ty "Genesis" comic PS3 version has.

Props to you, Hathur. Thanks for making these because I agree with others....the PS3 comic sucks.

They should have just made a 20-25min video to give the backstory. They could have crammed in much more and actually shown the original to PS3 players. Maybe MS wouldnt allow this? Could they have rendered it in the ME2 engine?

I don't understand why BioWare didn't simply pick the cutscenes from Mass1, tossed in them the dialogue wheel to make the choices and presto, interactive movie explaining Mass1.

But nooooo, we had to get a crappy comic with crappy script with pretty much half the original game's content scrapped.

Microsoft would have to approve any Mass Effect 1 orignal gameplay material showing up and I think we all know what the answer to that would be.

Actually, they showed stuff from ME1: various Codex images, and the Normandy Crash Site flashbacks.  Also, they show cutscenes from ME1 in the "Story So Far" vid, which is part of the PS3 demo.

Well, I have a couple relatives and few buddies who, turns out, are getting ME2 on the PS3... they never played Mass Effect 1 since they don't own a Xbox and their PCs are so old / underpowered they would be lucky to run Quake 2 smoothly.

Feeling aggravated that they're missing out on a huge part of the Mass Effect story (and the comic, while nice, won't do it justice)... I went out and made a story focused playthrough video series of it on youtube.

Well done. *thumbs up*

I'll bookmark this so I can point any PS3 players interested in the direction of this thread/the vids.

Exactly this. Now I can see it in action instead of reading about it on the wiki.

That might actually net them some trouble. That would be essentially importing a functioning part of the game into ME2 and thus violating Microsoft's publishing rights and whereas Bioware may have been able to bring over video and art assets that they likely have the intellectual rights to, doing that would I think be problematic.

Very nice of you, Hathur. Hopefully this provides the PS3 users with a more thorough and satisfying background. I also like how you chose to use FemShep!

This is awesome. I hope it DOES get a sticky, because it would go a long way toward helping ease PS3 players (and other potential customers) into ME2 with a better foundation of ME1.
