Why does everyone assume Quarians will look like Turians?

I'll admit I'm guilty of that lazy thinking but after a while I came to realize that there is no logical reason for the two species to be anything alike.
Just my two cents...

I expect some hard skin like turians in the back going from their neck all the way down protecting their spine. Since grunt said is tricky severing quarian's spine.
Maybe some hard skin on their shins. Aside from it I imagine them to be mostly smooth, except for their iconic legs and grunt's statement about their spine.

I dont. I expect them to have a scaly protection to their spine while most of their body being smooth. Since from the codex the look similar to humans.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't speaking about their spine. He starts off with human spines but then says:
You're soft. Asari, Salarians, all soft. Quarians not so much. Turians, you have to work the blade I guess. Don't see much point though.
Heh heh, much point."

Until Bioware decide whether or not to show us her face its what you imagine is behind the mask. Everything the community creates is still based on speculation which can be interpreted any way.

quarians probably do have hide-like skin, though, since grunt hints they have tougher skin than humans.

Thirded, and while we're on the subject at this point I thought it was widly accepted that the quarian's facial structure is at least similar to human's based on the "placeholder" face they all have behind those masks. I'm not sure where the "they look like turians" theory is coming from.

Nearly everyone assumes that Tali is going to be an exotic human with Indian/South-Central Asian connotations with funny skintone and chicken legs.

I don't at all assume or even imagine them to look like turians. Actually, I've always imagined the quarians to look humanoid in some sense -- unlike the turians, who are completely alien in terms of appearance.
Maybe it'll be a combination, Humanoid appearance with scaly skin.

You must not have been here long enough. Although it is an obvious generalization (how often does someone actually mean everyone?) I've seen the speculation quite often over the year that this game has been out.
Also, their legs are the only things that really compare to turians. Turian hips are much thinner and their upper thighs are thicker, attached differently to the hips.
Turian necks are also different. I would argue that quarian body structure, aside from the legs, are more like humans than turians.
EDIT: perhaps I wasn't specific enough. The assumption that their skin will be scaly is mostly what I'm talking about. Most people assume that because grunt says that quarians aren't as soft as humans quarians are somehow scaly. That their genetic similarity to turians dictates that they will be similar when that genetic similarity is about as basic as you can get, simply the type of proteins that make up the DNA not how that DNA is compiled.
Like I said, Ebola uses the same basic proteins as human DNA but it is used very differently.

I think a better question is why everyone (judging from forum posts and fanart) seems to think quarians have purple skin? I mean, we met a lot of quarians in ME2 and as far as I remember, Tali is the only one with a purple mask (or at least most of them don't).

Quarians look humanoid. You can see some of Tali's face through her mask in ME2, and even better in ME1. I think anyone wanting to believe she looks like a turian (or predator or squid or something) is trying really hard to ignore what they can see for themselves. Now whether or not she has fangs or cat-slit eyes or hair (i'm guessing 'no') is a different story, but they certainly have mostly humanish faces.

I agree with this.

Here is a typical example:

If Tali and Quarians had not yet been introduced as a character in the Mass Effect series, and this was concept art, most people would guess she's human, but altered in some way.

I believe that comes from not Tali's mask but what skin would look like from 0 exposure from UV rays. Wouldn't be stark white but because of the blood and muscle and nerves, it might be various shades of very light pink, blue, grey, PURPLE.Homey C-Dawg wrote...
