I think a better question is why everyone (judging from forum posts and fanart) seems to think quarians have purple skin? I mean, we met a lot of quarians in ME2 and as far as I remember, Tali is the only one with a purple mask (or at least most of them don't).

I believe that comes from not Tali's mask but what skin would look like from 0 exposure from UV rays. Wouldn't be stark white but because of the blood and muscle and nerves, it might be various shades of very light pink, blue, grey, PURPLE.

Like varicose veins? Ewww.

Thats a good enough theory. Quarians have red blood like humans, so I assume their skin would be similarly affected by their enviro-suits as humans would if they were stuck in them. But do you really think thats the reason joe-shmo talimancer thinks they are purple skinned? I'm still inclined to thinks it's because of people tunnle-visioning in on Tali's mask.

Personally, I think they would be grey skinned, slender, and bald. Sort of like a cross between a human and an Area51 alien. Probably containing secksiness traits (big eyes, petite mouths, etc.) since theres so many Tali fans.

BTW I really hope that the popular Tali fanart thats a few posts up does not turn out to be what quarians look like. It's just a human in a quarian suit, which would look ridiculous with those chicken legs.

Unfortunately I think a much larger percentage of the fanbase thinks (or wants) Tali and the rest of the Quarians to look just like humans. Do a quick search for Tali fanart and you'll mostly come across portrayals of the Quarians as humans with an exotic skin tone. Some in fact, don't even bother with the exotic skin tone.

Here is a typical example:

If Tali and Quarians had not yet been introduced as a character in the Mass Effect series, and this was concept art, most people would guess she's human, but  altered in some way.

I highly doubt they look like this. I agree with the earlier post about grey skinned, bald, and slender.

I agree, that picture isn't nearly alien enough. I will never be able to forget the one I saw, probably NOT FAN art per se, where Tali had a tentacle mouth.

Creepy...

I think I know the one you're talking about; I thought it was rather cute actually.

Wow. I saw a comic in the Funny comics thread that reminded me of it. I couldn't stop laughing looking at it because of how crazy it looked.

Maybe it's my vidcard, or my HD TV or something, but everytime I get a decent look at Tali, it looks for all the world like the girl has forehead ridges.  I had originally thought it was some antialiasing artifact, but if it is, it's a pretty darn consistent artifact.

Grunt calling the quarians harder to damage than the other "soft" races doesn't necessarily mean she's scaly.  A quarian's skeletal structure could be rather interesting.  Physiologically - and any biologists may feel free to correct me - quarian legs look to be designed to allow quarians to run like batsouttahell.

Who knows - maybe quarians look like attractively smooth and big-boned ostrich-like velociraptors. ;)

I am actually quite lenient to concepts, but I dismiss those that look exactly like humans because that's too obvious, AND boring. Personally, I would tend to stick to the features that show up on the placeholders through Tali's mask - two eyes, a human-like nose. We can't tell if she has ears, we can't tell if she has lips [the mask cuts it off at the mouth], and we don't even know what KIND of eyes Quarian's have. For all we know they could look like Salarian eyes, or Krogan eyes. They seem to glow, however... Not sure about the rest of you, but I want Quarians to look quite alien. Playing it safe and making them look like Humans/Asari will bore me.

I'd actually vote for avian-like on this one.

Quarian legs are built for speed, the neck seems a bit long, or it could be her costume. Skull shape seems to have a slight curve. The aesthetics of the back of the helmet for the males seems reminiscent of a plume, and... it may just be the costume, but now that I'm looking at it I didn't notice the extra curvature of Tali's shawl in ME1, and now that she's an adult, it's there. Maybe it's part of a mating show? The older females don't seem to have it - maybe it's only while fertile?

Eh, good conjectures... but that's all they are. Heck, human embryos turn their legs around in the womb before birth, so it's not like stranger things couldn't happen with other species. :)

I agree. I want them to be alien as much as possible. I don't really care too much about the attractiveness of their design because at the end of the day that sort of thing works itself out on its own.

Just go for alien in my opinion.
