 Hi Guys,

So I have just bought myself Mass Effect (For PC) so I can get to know the story more before ME2 is released for the PS3. I bought the 'EA Value Games' copy. So I get home and I install the game (I got two discs though??) and it installs with no problem. When I try to launch the game I get redirected to a configuration screen, but whenever that screen is loading I get an error and the program shuts down. I try and try again but I can't get the game to launch:crying:!

My specs:

CPU: Intel Quad Core Q9550 
GPU: ATI HD 4670
RAM: 4gigs
OS: Win7 34bit
HDD: 500gigs (With 347gigs free)

As you can see my PC well surpasses the recommended specs. Why I can't I get it to work?

Have you installed the latest patch (1.03)? It is a known issue that the configuration utility crashes on newer computers.

It's probably something fairly simple that has gotten slightly out of whack.  You must have Dx9 as well as whatever native Direct3D APIs are the default for your Windows version.  All of the Direct3D levels are totally compatible with one another, but neither Dx10 nor Dx11 is adequately backward compatible to run this game correctly.  You need to have a card- specific video graphics driver, not just whatever Windows might use as a generic one. 

In your case, the newer the driver, the better (so go direct to AMD to get it).  That's the easiest to try.  Installing Dx9 is next-easiest, and the last is to uninstall the game and reinstall it. 

Well, shoot, I was a bit slow.  Some systems do have to run the patch update before the game starts up properly.

No I haven't. I wasn't able to find it when I clicked on the link in the first menu. I just got a blank page.

Honestly, I can't recall anything past 1.02, but I played it a goodly long while ago, and have forgotten a lot about it. I didn't have any trouble before or after the patches.  Mass Effect 2 has had both a 1.03 and a 1.04, however, as I recall.

Well, Steam version is supposedly 1.03, even though there are no 1.03 patch notes (only 1.01 and 1.02).

1.02 is the latest ME1 patch. The Steam version was modified slightly (SecuROM DRM removed, Steam DRM put on) but I don't think it has its own version number - it shows as 1.02 in my config utility.
