Is Dragon Age going to do that stupid thing where girl characters are ALWAYS dressed skimpily?

As a disclaimer I am straight guy, but it pisses me off so much when I equip female characters with armour and it turns out it's just a bikini or something stupid like that. It really takes away the realism of a universe when I see people fighting in armour that should be sold in a sex shop.

Heres an example: Morrigan okay I see she was raised in a forst I understand that and it makes sense but what doesn't make sense is that she's rags in a from what I understand a very cold nation. Espiecally in the wilds. Why wouldn't she be wearing a heavy mage robe to keep warm?

I don't mind nudity in a video game if it makes sense though, an example of this is the lady of the forest if she wore clothes that'd just be stupid.

I think the point here is whether female characters are ALWAYS in overly sexy outfits, as the thread title suggests.

No, they're not. It really depends on the character-- some are going to be sexy, while others are much more modest. Otherwise, while we may not toss out the bikini chain mail a la Frank Frazetta we aren't particularly opposed to having some sexy or revealing outfits. Every character in the game is pretty much idealized, and don't take much "realism" into account with regards to the protectiveness of their coverings.

In other words, we're not going to lace everyone up to the collar and cover their ankles just so some folks don't get into a huff. ;)

Be ready. I personally think it's not a big deal, but there's going to be people who take this to mean that Dragon Age is turning into Dead or Alive. Image IPB

I'm not sure we're "turning into" anything. There may be lots of changes on the art front, but how revealing the armor is hasn't really changed at all from Origins.

Except on the Qunari.  Going from "covered from head to toe in overlapping plates" to "no shirt and capri pants" is a big difference.  But, hey, they're all ripped so I guess wanting to show off comes naturally or something.

Could be that we just wanted to show off their rippling muscles, sure. Or there could also be an in-game reason why they're not dressed in armor. Certainly we've never said that the qunari don't dress in actual armor ever.

I mean, I'm not trying to make up flawless explanations but I think that type of minor "retcon" can always be justified with enough imagination.

I'm not sure the popular fan definition of "retcon" has any room for imagination.

I really very seriously hope you guys go back to more Dragon age Origins style in the future -.- This "idealized" thing is making me cringe.

I'll interpret that as you suggesting characters in Origins weren't idealized... which is a little bizarre. And I'm really not sure which part of DA2 you think is so different in this respect.

Oh, what I'm trying to say is, maybe some people are shocked to see more provacative women in DA2? In DA:O, we only really had Morrigan, and Morrigan's outfit wouldn't have been quite so shocking if Bethany and re-visioned Isabela had been there! So, while it's great that we have more females who are comfortable with their bodies and want to show them off, I can understand where some people think it's taking different turn from DA:O.

Personally, I only feel uncomfortable when I look at Bethany, since I'm supposed to play her older brother or sister! In real life, when my little sisters dress provocatively, I always say something, or encourage them to wear sweaters... Of course, this only encourages them to take off even more clothing, so maybe I'll just let Bethany dress the way she wants, haha.

More provocative women in DA2? Based on what?

Isabela is certainly showing some skin, no question. Bethany shows some cleavage, but not even that much (unless you're going strictly by the exaggerated version of her) and certainly no more than your average character in Origins. Beyond that you've seen Merrill and Aveline, who are about as un-provacative as I imagine one could be. The only other female character we've shown is the female templar, who is just as heavily armored as Aveline is.

Come to think of it, I think this exact same thread popped up when we revealed Morrigan the first time. Isabela is no more representative of how women dress in DA2 than Morrigan was for Origins.

The only problem I have with Isabela is that she has no pants.. I mean, wtf.

Oh no! A character in a tunic dress! Someone inform the Puritan Police!

Honestly, the fact that Isabela is always going to dress like Isabela, and someone can't switch her out into a dowdier set of armor just because is probably the thing I like most about the new inventory system.

Unnecessary much? Thinking someone not wearing pants is silly =/= Puritan

Why is it silly? Is a short skirt or a tunic dress silly? Every comment I've seen regarding her so-called lack of pants either has a puritanical streak behind it or takes the view that she's not wearing enough armor-- as if adding a pair of pants to her current outfit would make her sooo much better protected?

Yeah, I'm going with puritanism. Thankfully, she doesn't care. :)

Really though making the assumption that everyone who finds it eh is because some sort of realism/puritian remark is just off to me. I mean just shallow and shortsighted. It's like choosing the easiest target to go "haha" at to belittle their opinion even if the person you quoted didn't mean it in that context.

I said that this seems to be the basis for every comment I've seen. You can get yourself up in a huff if it suits you -- I suppose if someone wants to take a "well I just don't like it!" stance without any other basis, they're certainly free to. Congratulations on having an opinion?

And, yes, it is a tunic dress. Try googling it if you don't know what that is.

Isabela strikes me as a "blatant fanservice" kind of gal.

And how dare some fans like that, I suppose?

Well, I guess people can scold me for mentioning puritanism-- but listening to a bunch of people cluck their tongues in disapproval every time a character shows some thigh or some side boob sure starts to sound that way. I'd much rather someone just said her outfit looked bad, like "I would never wear that! Gawd, what is she thinking?" Which is probably what some people are saying, but I never said everyone feels this way. Christ. Make one broad generalization in response to a bunch of different people and everyone thinks you're talking about them personally. ;)

Actually, I think someone in the Wheel of Time did it first.

It would be a pity if those extremely sensual boobs got a knife in them because an assasin was on the look out for a pirate with highly identifiable clothing.

I'm sure she could distract him with her Motorboat talent, being all about the fanservice and such.

...okay, that was maybe too far. Bed time for me. ;)

Its sad that something like that would chase her away from the forums, but the reality is that if that truly did chase her away, she wouldn't have lasted long around here anyway, as crazy stuff like that does get said from time to time. If she can't keep herself from taking it seriously, she's probably better off not reading the forums at all.

Umm... what? I'm still here. I posted just as much now as I did back before that incident, which is to say not much at all. I don't really have anything to add that wouldn't be a spoiler, and I'm not interested in engaging in a discussion that revolves mainly around Isabela's pantlessness and how this does, or does not reflect her skankiness.
