But the mages have had a big improvement, although still exposed where it counts, they seem to be wearing some sort of chainmail wrapped around or beneath their robes:

Her chest area must be impermeable to mortal weapons. A common trait in women.

At least she's covered her arms and legs relatively well... Besides, what kind of male warrior would aim for the chest? If the male-female opponent ratio is anything like in Origins, I think this is very practical :P

Perfect bosoms being rare and all

/Princess Bride.

Actually her breasts aren't near as big in the new dev diary so I am pleased with that.

As far as I'm concerned mages can wear whatever they want... they're mages so what does it matter if they have a robe with a collar up to the chin or robe with cleavage. It would still be just a robe.

Judging from the most recent video though, Bethany's breasts do seem smaller.

Are you referring to this picture?

Hmm... Slightly smaller, but not much... It may be the angle...

For some I guess it is a "mature" thing.
But anyway, in lots of ways games are not to much realistic.

Then there is a psychological effect... the men stare at my atributs and forget all about my sword

I'm betting on the large breasts being an "exaggeration."  Which I think is a wonderful subversion.

Oh, I'd HAPPILY get rid of Varric's chest hair.

In my eyes, it's a bit... disgusting. Perhaps disgusting is a huge word. Couldn't find a better word anyway. At least wear something over it, or shave. it. off.

I just don't get why people are all like "OMG EPICKZZZ" when they see Varric's chest hair. >_>

Can you imagine a rune stone all tangled up in that forest of dwarf fuzz?

They feel it's manly, like the beard; but you have to have the attitude to pull it off or it doesn't work. Different strokes and all that. Me, I think it works for the character, while typically it's not something I find appealing.

Seriously, though, why fixate on the armor thing? This is still a fantasy game. No, we don't want people running around in armor bikinis, because that looks silly, but fantasy fiction has a long tradition of putting attractive people in armor that is going to show off their attributes. Kind of sucks to spend your entire adventure traveling with the sexy rogue or mage (or Barbarian, as all the Conan comic fans recall) only to ever see her in body concealing clothing; and that is where you'll spend the majority of your time looking at npcs, in combat or mission time between combat.

Realism is good, yes, but this is also an entertainment medium. (this same argument relates to the flashy combat discussion entertainment vs realism)

As a disclaimer I am straight guy, but it pisses me off so much when I equip female characters with armour and it turns out it's just a bikini or something stupid like that. It really takes away the realism of a universe when I see people fighting in armour that should be sold in a sex shop.

Heres an example: Morrigan okay I see she was raised in a forst I understand that and it makes sense but what doesn't make sense is that she's rags in a from what I understand a very cold nation. Espiecally in the wilds. Why wouldn't she be wearing a heavy mage robe to keep warm?

I don't mind nudity in a video game if it makes sense though, an example of this is the lady of the forest if she wore clothes that'd just be stupid.

But don't you see? Video Games + Women + Armour eventually leads to something that does not equate to "Full armour and no flesh/body figure being shown." Clearly years of being a gamer have taught you that m'dear. I doubt DA2 will have bikini armour because that would be silly indeed.

Or... hmm... *visualises*... mmm... yeah maybe it ain't so silly...

Variety in women bossoms are abound.  In DA II as long as my "Femme Hawke"  is not the stereotypical type, I am happy with that.  After all I control her.

As far as Mages outfits, they need to dress up for the part as sorceresses/wizards .  Sorceresses are powerful and if  that companion is used properly, utilizing her arsenal magical powers, she will not be touched. Anyway, Hawke's role (as a tank) is to ensure she is protected by pulling aggro off of her (him- wizard).  If she is the Main Character, it is the tank's job to protect the mage.

So, well protected, a mage can wear, alluring outfits that can show a bit amount of cleavage.

Bioware has said many times they don't do the bikini armor. Because it's not practical and are not interested.

LOL Where did they say that?  Because if they did, it isn't true.

I remember seeing that quote - iirc it was Mike Laidlaw but I could be wrong.  I've often thought of it since then...I suppose, strictly speaking, its true.  No chain mail bikinis, as such. <_<

I think the point here is whether female characters are ALWAYS in overly sexy outfits, as the thread title suggests.

No, they're not. It really depends on the character-- some are going to be sexy, while others are much more modest. Otherwise, while we may not toss out the bikini chain mail a la Frank Frazetta we aren't particularly opposed to having some sexy or revealing outfits. Every character in the game is pretty much idealized, and don't take much "realism" into account with regards to the protectiveness of their coverings.

In other words, we're not going to lace everyone up to the collar and cover their ankles just so some folks don't get into a huff. ;)

Be ready. I personally think it's not a big deal, but there's going to be people who take this to mean that Dragon Age is turning into Dead or Alive. Image IPB

A broadsword to the chest is fatal. Doesn't matter if you're wearing a bikini or plate armor. Realism only goes so far.

Actually not that simple. many factors come into play here:

What type of armor? What quality of armor? What type of Broadsword? What quality of Broadsword? What skill/strength of attacker? What condition of victim?

It's actually harder than you think to piece a thick piece of solid steel. More often than not the damage would actually be blunt instead of slashing/penetrating, which depending on the condition of victim, eg. muscles etc. could be either fatal or not.

A really high quality/dense chainmail for example was almost impossible to slash/stab through with the weapons they had back then. I know the show in it's entirety is kind of lame, but see a few episodes of Deadliest warrior where they actually run live tests on these sorts of armor, in one particular episode they had a chainmail and it was pretty much impossible to pierce/slash through. Again the actual blunt trauma from a strike was more likely to kill you/knock the breath out of you than actual penetrating wounds.
