It is impossible to cut or slash through maille, even with the larger swords.

Then I must be a super human, I've done it before with a one and a half handed sword. It was rather heavy high quality chainmail with 2mm forged steel rings. Arrows, hammers and spears also push the rings aside and can penetrate chainmail easily. I've also seen several people do it in videos, although I'm not sure about the chainmails quality.

Oh... and maille was anything but cheap. Comparatively, maille and plate is almost as expensive. Plate replaced maille at the start of the renaissance and onwards.

No armor was cheap, but plate armor was MUCH more expensive and exclusive because it had to fit its wearer tightly.  There was no one size fits all plate armor, all of the full plate armors had to be custom-fitted to its wearers body. Chainmail came in standard sizes, it was very easy to repair and could be mass produced.  Plate armor was way more complex and expensive to make.

Well, alright, although skintight chainmail doesn't protect either, except from dinner-grade cutlery. Sticks and Stones still break the bones. And so do swords.

Good chance it chafes, too.

That having been said, I like Bethany's outfit. *sigh* I'm such a dude...

Point be made a properly fitted chainmail is supposed to hug rather close to the skin.

This might sound like a stupid question but why is this? If a blow with a sword hits a chainmail, wouldn't it be better to have it slightly lose so it can actually recoil/absorb the kinetic energy a bit before it transfers into your body mass?

Chainmail is not supposed to soak impacts, that's what the leather lining under a platemail is for......

a chainmail is supposed to prevent slashing wounds and it does that VERY well

How could I forget leather, of course.

However not only does chainmail prevent slashing, but it's also very effective at stopping stabbing motions, and a vertical/horizontical blow with a sword will most definatly not cut through it if the chainmail have enough links/dense.

I'm not sure, but I think it was the pointy end of a katana in Deadliest warrior the dude used all his force and weight to try and stab through it, but it didn't go through. I don't know how true to the time this chainmail was, but I'm sure they knew their smithing work back then.

Two handed sword as I imagine you're refering to, was really uncommen, I know this is a fantasy game so it's all irellevant anyway, but from a historical standpoint the biggest enemy of medieval/renaissance armor was ranged weapons from relatively close distance. Eg. crossbows and handcannons/arquebusers.

Longbows at Crecy.

Anyway, I wouldn't say the Zweihander was uncommon--it was a specialty weapon, used by footmen for knocking down horsemen or prying knights out of their armor like a glorified can-opener.  It's not a great formation weapon, but depending on the battle it may see a lot of use.  Or not.

As a disclaimer I am straight guy, but it pisses me off so much when I equip female characters with armour and it turns out it's just a bikini or something stupid like that. It really takes away the realism of a universe when I see people fighting in armour that should be sold in a sex shop.

Heres an example: Morrigan okay I see she was raised in a forst I understand that and it makes sense but what doesn't make sense is that she's rags in a from what I understand a very cold nation. Espiecally in the wilds. Why wouldn't she be wearing a heavy mage robe to keep warm?

I don't mind nudity in a video game if it makes sense though, an example of this is the lady of the forest if she wore clothes that'd just be stupid.

It's the silicone.

I really have no problem with the coverage of the armor designs. Sure Isabela has no pants, but we've also got ladies in robes and full plate. I also no longer have a problem with the breast sizes in the game since we've been seeing characters with smaller bosoms lately. What I would have a problem with is across-the-board giant bewbs and skimpy armor.

Aveline is a woman. I love it when people can't tell. :D

We need more characters like this. I personally think that the only difference between male/female should be their genitals. Don't flame, my opinion.

Except on the Qunari.  Going from "covered from head to toe in overlapping plates" to "no shirt and capri pants" is a big difference.  But, hey, they're all ripped so I guess wanting to show off comes naturally or something.

Could be that we just wanted to show off their rippling muscles, sure. Or there could also be an in-game reason why they're not dressed in armor. Certainly we've never said that the qunari don't dress in actual armor ever.

Besides, we never saw "the" Qunari in Origins. We saw Sten, whom we equip ourselves, and we saw mercenaries, who basically gave up the Qun, ripped off their horns and sold themselves to some bandit team. Then there were Sten's companion-in-arms in the Fade, but since it's the Fade, it doesn't have to be real. I mean, I'm not trying to make up flawless explanations but I think that type of minor "retcon" can always be justified with enough imagination.Image IPB

Chasind robes of breast enlargement.

Though frankly I don't care what the other female NPCs wear as long as my femHawke looks...normalish to me. No giant bewbs, no exposed clevage, no skimpy clothing.

As long as I can dress her in full platemail and/or pants I'm fine.

And please...no boob slots in massive armor. Please. I liked the fact in Origins those boob slots went away. It's one of the reasons I can't stand wearing heavy armor. I feel ridculous.

I've seen people do this, too, but it also has a lot to do with how the chainmail is supported.  If someone gets an open blow at you (it's not deflected in any way) with a decent weapon, there's not much armor you can wear that will *stop* the blow.  If you dodge even a little bit, though, the blade will just grate uselessly off the surface of the armor.  You'll have a nasty bruise in about a day, maybe, but this is what the mail is meant for.  It's *not* meant to stop a blow cold.  The local show-jousters use super-light-weight lances that are made out of pine that's not much harder than balsa wood, and they still have to cut halfway through them to make them break properly instead of potentially delivering a life-threatening blow through a full suit of heavy plate mail and padding.  (And even then, the splinters can be dangerous to the eyes--they wear eye protection UNDER their helmets).

I've seen my housemate get sent to the hospital more than once by a bunch of pudgy unathletic guys with fake wooden weapons, too.  Combat just ain't safe.

Ah-em. Jack&Miranda in ME2, Morrigan in Origins, Bioware still gives us this crap like any other studio.

I mean seriously, what is the point behind it all?

Considering they've shown battling, it better be a damn good reason. Right now I'm imagining sneaking in a elite strike force as emmissaries, and have them dress "traditional Qunari trappings" or something like that. Still strikes me as odd and at odds with what's been revealed about the species, but we'll have to see.

I. WAS. TEASING.

Don't get me wrong--I actually like the Qunari's new "look", and I don't find it patently any more ridiculous than their old "look".  I just like poking fun of the Qunari in general and I'd do it no matter WHAT they wore.  Cmon, it's a whole race of big muscly straight-men.  No red-blooded (heterosexual) female could resist repeatedly poking them.

Addendum:  Although, the change does make you wonder about whether the Reverend Mother in Lothering had to send the Templars out to hunt up a suit of clothes big enough for Sten before they hucked him in that cage.  And I suspect that getting him INTO the clothes was probably an interesting scene depending on how contrary he was feeling at the time.

It makes me wish there'd been an option to play a Warden with the personality of my old Team Leader Kim, who referred to her male coworkers generally as "Hot Stuff" and "Sweet Thang".  If you managed to get out of her room without being told to "shake dat ass", you were either very fast or she was sick.  If the Qunari is going to refuse to call my character by her name (or tell me his), she's calling him "sex machine".
