How do I install the Ultimate Edition and How do I gift my old copy?

So I bought DAO when it first came out, which means I got the game and the Stone Prisoner DLC. However I just bought the Ultimate Edition (you can't not pick it up for 25 bucks) which came with DAO again and Stone Prisoner (again).

The package includes just one code to give all the DLC. Is there a way to "gift" the extra copies to a friend or something?

Also, how the hell do I actually install the game? I manually ran the installation program but it says "DAO detected, do you want to reinstall the program again"? The autoplay just runs the launcher instead.

Do I REALLY have to uninstall and reinstall the whole thing? That'll take days! Well maybe not days, but still a LONG TIME!!! Where's the Awakening installation file?

Loads of people have encountered problems installing Ultimate Edition over an older copy of the game. So in short, yes, it's best to uninstall it all, then delete the Bioware folder under "My Documents", and then delete the Bioware folder under "Program Files" (or "Program Files (x86) if you're running a 64-bit system)... and reinstall the game from scratch.

Installing Ultimate Edition shouldn't take so long, since everything is on disc, including the DLC. With Ultimate Edition, all you have to do *authorize* the DLC online.

Also, I believe Awakening installs along with Origin, although some people have trouble launching it IF they did not do a full uninstall first.

As to gifting your old copy of Dragon Age... it's a generous idea, but the DLC won't transfer to another account.

Hope that helps...

BTW... if you want to save an old character, back up the "Character" folder under "My Documents" and then copy it in after the game is reinstalled.

Meh I killed everything and decided to start a new game from scratch. It's been a while since I finished DAO. Too bad I can't give away my old copy. EA is no Valve. When I got the Orange Box the game automatically gave me a code to give my copy of HL2 (I had 2 copies) to my friend.

I hope for DA2 there'll be some way to give away extra copies. March 8th can't come soon enough.

[edit]

And the installation did take a long time! In the time it took to install, I made spaghetti and meatbal, corn chowder, and watched an episode of NCIS! LOL

Well... at least you're well fed and moderately entertained.  :)

BTW... your friend should be able to use the old copy. Just not the Stone Prisoner or Blood Armor that came with it. They may be able to buy their own DLC for it, if they wish. Not sure about that.

I just noticed there's a "remove registration" option. Does that do anything at all? Can I somehow detach the game from my account of anyone can sign up a new account and use the same serial or something?

I have never tried it (so I can't tell if it works as intended), but it was designed to remove the registration, so that a new account can be created with the option of registering the same game. Other users have mentioned removing registration in their posts before, so you might want to do a search and see what they said (just remember that the search here only searches through thread titles and gives 51 of the oldest results, so it's better to use google too).

However, I think it still won't delete your account's entitlement to the DLCs you either bought or got through codes - the DLCs aren't tied to game registration. Not sure about that though.

There have been threads/posts before about contacting EA support to transfer DLC entitlements from one account to another (you can do a google search for them as well - just add site:social.bioware.com before the search parameters to limit the results to this site), but it might create some problems if you already redeemed the code from the Ultimate Edition (there may only be an option to transfer all the entitlements and not those you want). Also, some people have reported authorization issues after they transferred the entitlements. So it might be better to do a proper search before contacting EA.

No, I think not. While I at time didn't think of giving my DA:O copy away (but it's great idea to "spread the word", as it were) I purchased DA:Ultimate Edition and have deleted my old key, and registered the new one.
I still got the Lucky Stone and The Edge, which were entitlements earned with my previous copy - which makes me suspect that the DLC aren't tied to the game key, but the email address used when enabling the content.
So no, I don't think that the DLC "tied" to the old copy which the OP refers to can be transferred as well - if the one who receives the gift decides he/she wants to play with DLC, they'll have to buy it themselves.

Actually, the Lucky Stone and the Edge were free DLC incentives handed out before DA:O launched in Nov. 09.  They don't require authorization... anyone can download them and install them manually.  There's more stuff like Amulet of the War Mage and the Wicked Oath ring.

See http://dragonage.wik...oadable_Content and scroll down to the bottom for a list.

Wow, you're right it seems... IIRC the Lucky Stone required a character to be made in the Character Creator application, which then had to be uploaded before the DLC was "unlocked"; whereas The Edge was a bonus for registering within a certain date limit....

But yes, it appears now that they're completely free, actually.

Well, you *can* give away your previous Stone Prisoner DLC - just give your friend your account and make a new one for youself and activate DAO UE DLC's on the new one.

Three problems: first, the account is attached to all my other Bioware products (ie. Mass Effect, NVN, etc., etc.).

Second, the account is attached to my email (not sure if I can change it or give it away). While this is barely acceptable if I gift the game to someone I know, this is not so okay if I want to gift the game to some random person (most of my friends have this game already, DAO being an excellent bioware title that received numerous awards).

Third, I already registered the codes to my existing account. While I don't want to see my old copy go to waste, I certainly don't want to wait weeks and months to find a solution on "how to give away my old copy" before I start playing the new content.

Unlike most people, I don't own OVER NINE THOUSAND email accounts. I have one email account. Since Bioware registration requires an unique email account, registering a new account is problematic.

Like I have said before, why can't EA implement a system similar to Steam where extra copies can be transferred easily? EA is going the way of digital distribution anyway, as evident with ALL the DAO and ME2 DLCs.

And before you can say "they are trying to eliminate the resale market how dare you stand in their way of profit", Steam only allows transfer IF AND ONLY IF you have an extra copy. This means I (or someone) ALREADY PAID FOR BOTH COPIES. The company will have already made all the money they can and should. They stand to lose NOTHING (but possibly gaining my loyalty as a customer).

YOU HEAR ME EA?!?!

(they probably don't, they're all bathing in money and smoking cigars wrapped in 100 dollar bills)
