Okey dokey. Ya ever...ask them to leave? Or at least to start paying rent? Is the kitchen neutral territory for the rival factions?

Yeah I have no desire to end up with a bullet in my skull thanks.

Plus they leave me alone. I'm pratically invisible to them.

On the meaning of words - a perfect example: There is a word in polish which stands for dick in really pejorative meaning. About 400 years ago it stood :) for a decorative part of the belt (aristocracy and gentry) made of threads, hanging down. Somewhere along the years it changed meaning. Now its only a vulgarism.

There are lots of examples, similar to this one. That is why it sounds... has a bad ring to my ear when I encounter F or similar words in a fantasy game. Too modern for its own sake.

Like I said, I prefer the descriptive approach :)

By the way, **** is used in every sentence nowadays it seems. It is so bad, that in films portrying an elder era, they use the word although it was not in use at that time

Depends on what era. It was pretty common in 17th century poetry.

It was... thanks and ok... one more info to keep track of in my clotted brain :)

If swearing, cursing all that **** (yeah, I had to curse when speaking of curses...) adds to the personality of a character (like having a bad-mouth character that adds **** to every sentence), I'm all for it.

An idea... why not say " you are a 4.star idiot... or a10.star idiot... 10.star is another swear word... and when saying "you are a 100.star 10.star-ing lovely man/woman... that should do it :-)

Examples of Movie Lines Involving What Could Be Called Unnecessary Swearing Ruined Without It.

Shut the heck up Donny

Curse Gaspar Diaz! Curse the Diaz Brothers! Curse them all!

Someone rig up some photoshopped scenes people! I would but I'm too busy rebuilding my bootlegging shack after the "why does this game cost $60" thread fiasco.

I fear this may start a monkey fights for DA3 thread!

The point is, we all say swearing isn't clever, it doesn't make you cool. And it doesn't.

But if you are cool and THEN you swear, its brilliant.

Partially related: it leads me to think that the acceptance of swearing is based on motivation to and the intent of the swear? It is more accepted if it comes from frustration that from wanting to impress with vulgarity?

I don't think one has to be cool to make swearing 'brilliant' as you say. As long as the motivation of the curse is genuine release of tension it seems to be more accepted. (As in you accidentally ram your foot againstr the doorpost as you walk by and you scream out in pain with a curse). If you toss f*ck in with every other word, it becomes boring, immature, and for many a sign of lower intelligence or ill education.

The cool factor doesn't really count for me, but I can also see that point, but that doesn't only relate to swearing. People will always try to imitate cool people, which in turn most of the time makes them look ridiculous.

Í wasn't being that serious with my comment.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, sometimes swearing can be used COMPLETELY for comic or dark enjoyment value and in that case it is brilliant. It isn't always part of a deep motivation or character study or even a toe-in-door reaction. Hell, my girlfriend HATES "The Wire" for the swearing even though it makes perfect sense in the environment its in but she loves banging her head to "killing in the name of" and all the random swears across "Big Lebowski". Put simply. Swearing can simply be there to add a bit of silly indulgent audience mirth for a moment.

And to those who damn those who swear as possessing lower intelligence, I direct them to the thoughts of Stephen Fry linked to earlier in this thread.

by "we" I'm assuming you mean the DA
team......because the ME team uses cluster F-bombs like they7 are going
out of style thanks to jack

Of course. Different creative teams completely. I wish I could use expletives like the ME team can-- but a post-modern setting allows for very different things (and comes with its own limitations, I suppose).

And Jack was ****ing awesome.

Lies!  We know the ME team are the big boys.  The DA team are the little kids that get soap to the mouth and are forced to stand in corners if heard swearing.  Why else would you bleep yourself? Posted Image
