Alas, "zounds" is unlikely to appear. The word is a corruption of the expression "God'(s wounds)", referring to Christ being nailed to the cross. The closest equivalent to that is Andraste's burning, so it would likely be some kind of corrupted reference to fire. That or something straight-up profane like "Andraste's flaming t*ts!"drahelvete wrote...

Coarse language in DA2?

Yes, I know, it was just an example.
"Andraste's flaming teats". Good one. Definitely blasphemous enough.

I think it's best in fantasy when half the characters swear randomly in a cockney accent. That's how you can tell it's dark and mature.
Please. I can think of a certain other title that has already done this.
Wonder if Dragon Age 2 will follow suit.

Depends on what era. It was pretty common in 17th century poetry.

Did I hear Cassandra say BS to Varric in the developer's diary on story? Is DA2 like following the rule in North American non-cable TV, where swears are sometimes thrown in if it is used in a sentence instead of out in the open and not directly at somebody? I'd prefer HBO style profanities, but some indirect coarse language is good enough.
So you prefer swear words being used ALL the time like in Deadwood?
When they're used that much they tend to lose their power and it becomes a bit hilarious.
Everything should be more like Deadwood. Or at least have Swearengen pasted into it somewhere.

Our watchwords for profanity are occasional and impactful.
Profanity can be a great tool. It also makes for great meetings -- the one where the writers and editors sat down and drew up a list of what profanity was acceptable and what was unacceptable was probably the most hi-larious meeting I had all year long.

Because of different standards I assume ?
David Gaider : okay, let's have the Dwarves use "sod" a lot and give the Warden the option to call Anora a **** a couple of times.
Editor : Er, isn't that a little... How about "you're darn tootin' " ?
Sheryl Chee : F*$k this s%#t, I'm out of here.

You know Sheryl well, I see.
It's not so buch about different standards-- more us deciding what swears come off as being too anachronistic, which ones we were uncomfortable using (and whether that discomfort was just us being fuddy duddies or a legitimate reason not to use them) and which alternatives for swears that we could use that fit a bit better into our lore (such as crude names one might use for an elf or a mage).
The c-word debate was particularly awe-inspiring.

I wouldn't mind there being a comic-relief style character (preferably one with an Irish or Scottish accent), who swears with every third word, but personally I just find this style hilarious, especially when they're mad and they proceed to basically hose down the world with the f-bomb. There's a point at which it ceases to be offensive at all and just becomes silly incoherent spewings.
