It's seriously one of if not the best series of books I have ever read.
You're missing out.

PROLOGUE

"We should start back", Gared urged as the woods began to grow dark around them. "The wildlings are dead."
"Do the dead frighten you?" Ser Waymar Royce asked with just the hint of a smile.
Gared did not rise to the bait. He was an old man, past fifty, and he had seen the lordlings come and go. "Dead is dead", he said. "We have no business with the dead."
"Are they dead?" Royce asked softly. "What proof have we?"

Hooked yet?

So I can say ****, ****, vagina, and snatch but not c**t?
English speaking people are silly. Actually, I don't know of any other language where there's such a fuss over profanity.

EDIT: oh.. guess I couldn't say those words after all LOL. Even worse.

Vagina isn't offensive it's just the proper term.  Snatch is generally used as a derogatory term but not nevessarily an insult, more like what drunk frat boys are convinced they're gonna get.  I don't think I've ever heard someone called a snatch as an isult.  In truth, I don't know what the other two terms you used were.

Nope - but if you did that from memory I am impressed...or frightened.  I haven't decided which.

tw*t and p*ssy, which when used appropriately can be impactful without sounding profane. Then again, that may be because in my native language we don't censor ourselves half as much as english (and apparently latin-based languages).

Actually... why is such a godly body part an insult in the first place?

Okay on topic:

Bad language is very regional. In my neck of the woods you can say shi*t, bullsh*t, crap, bastard and various sundry words that might be considered taboo elsewhere, during prime time on commerical television. F**k is used more sparingly and only after 9.30pm ;-)

C**t is still considered taboo by most people but I did manage to reduce my mother to fits of laughter by using it repeatedly in an attempt to 'de-mystify' it and reclaim it as a proper word.

I have no opinion on swearing in games - I'm not particularly offended by swearing and actually think the more you use a word the less impact it has. Consider that it wasn't that long ago that 'damn' was considered swearing of the highest order.

I was going to submit that uncensored and then whimped out - so much for standing by my principles ;-)

Duh, I should have figured that out myself.  <_<
The only time I hear the latter is when a guy uses it to tell another guy he's a wimp, which is rude but who expects that part of you to be able to bench press 200 pounds or beat someone at raquetball, or from the aforementioned frat boys.  I fear I'll have to fall back on the "just beacuse" answer for why tw*t is less offensive than c**t except that the w makes it a less sharp word.  :D

I don't think it's the 'w' - it's just as soft as an 'n' - I think it's the 'c's fault.

I don't swear in the real world but will often drop obscenities in writing. I'm not sure that 'impactfulness' matters when it comes to words. Is anyone going to be shocked when someone swears in the game?

When Alistiar called Morrigan a b****, my only thought was that it was the pot calling the kettle black.

When Cassandra swore, I found myself thinking how sexy her accent was.

Heh. God forbid I have other things to do. I didn't see this until I came back, but it's too funny not to respond.

Even though we'd obviously been working on DAO for years prior to the Witcher coming out, clearly what happened was we either rearranged everything in our game to be more like the Witcher's awesome... or we should have gone "Oh no! The Witcher has elements similar to ours! If we don't make changes immediately there will be people on the forums rushing in to make superficial comparisons and point out how we copied them! We cannot allow that!"

...or we could simply allow for the fact that both DA and the Witcher have their common roots in fantasy, where nothing is completely new. I'm fine with that, myself, and if someone chooses to believe we were inspired by the Witcher, that's fine. It's a pretty great game, and there are worse things to be compared to. Knock yourself out. :)

Both, actually. There are some uses of the masculine that are considered less offensive than the feminine, but both have their pros and cons regarding usage. Ultimately we decided we're just not dark and edgy enough to use either with a straight face. ;)

I didn't see any similarities with TW apart from the obvious fantasy roots. If you wanted to be all 'thingy' about it, you could say all fantasy based games that send you on quests for rewards and advancement are ripping off Everquest... If you wanted to.

You could say Everquest ripped off D&D (which it did and admitted to) but where does it all end! *waves hands in air and runs round the room madly*

Doesn't everything copy TW according to these guys though?

I personally like DAO A LOT better than TW.

Wouldn't the intent of using them be to skew faces in the first place?

My understanding is that the rules for the Internet Comparison Game are as follows:

1) You need go no further back than the last game you played (or liked). Anything before that didn't exist.

2) Ignore any differences that don't fit your hypothesis. They are irrelevant.

3) Anything that is similar is a "rip-off" or "cliche", which is bad. Sneer when you invite anyone to prove you wrong.

I think Sandal should swear if you deny him his enchanment offering.

Sandal: "Enchantment?"

Hawke: "Not now boy, I have fiends to slay!"

Sandal: "Bloody hell you just say?"

Hawke: O.O

Sandal: "I'm sick of this sodding %$#@"

Coarse indeed. Welcome to the dark world of Hawke...
