That said, it's not *always* a problem for everyone. But Dragon Age is a CPU intensive game... so you could be running into ram issues when the action starts to intensify.
That said, before you start pulling out chips or anything like that, I would suggest two things:
1) You may be experiencing an overheating issue. This is a major source of system instability. As the action "heats up", your hardware will do the same... literally. GPUz is a free program that can tell you how hot your graphics card is getting... it's at http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ . Other programs, like SpeedFan, can tell you how hot your system is getting.
2) If you're playing at 1680 x 1050, try backing it down to a lower resolution and see if you get crashes.
Good luck,

No other issues with anything crashing, the game use to not crash until I reinstalled and applied the 1.04 patch!!!!!!
My pc is an alienware, I will test the cards heating but I did that when 1.02 patch came out and no issues but you never know. I will also try to lower resolution. Check back ok, I'll report back.

You're welcome.
Personally, I've never had a systems issue with patch 1.04-- only mild frustration at what wasn't fixed (mainly in Awakening). You might be surprised how much dust can build up inside a machine in just a few months, and it really does affect cooling.
Good luck!

Temp was 56 and then 58, lowered resolution and still crashed. How do I turn off the PhysX?
I don't think you can turn off the physx. Have you tried different versions of nvidia drivers? Try 258.96.

No not dust, I clean it once a month or more. I am very picky about that! Fans are all clear and working...
Wow. Your cleansliness shames me....
Anyway... let's see: I don't think you *can* turn off PhysX for Dragon Age... I believe DA forces it to run on the CPU (someone out there can correct me if I'm wrong). The Physx settings are in the Nvidia control panel under "3D Settings"... I would suggest leaving it on "Automatic".
Okay... while we're there, you might consider going under 3D Settings/Adjust 3D settings with preview/ and select "Let the 3D application decide" (if it's not set to that already).
Some people have said that the newest Nvidia drivers (260 series) are buggy. There is a beta version of the 265 series online. You could experiment with that or uninstall the newest driver and roll back to an older one. Many recommend using a program like DriverSweeper to make sure your drivers are truly uninstalled.
Beyond that, I'm getting into wild speculation here. I had an issue when I put a newer, DDR5 graphics card into my system with an Athlon X2 6000+ processor... not as many crashes but a lot of "spiky" polygons. A lot of people had the same problem with older Nvidia cards that came "factory overclocked". The solution is posted here: http://social.biowar...8/index/5574840 ... it involves underclocking your GPU's memory a little.
BTW, do you have any mods installed?
I'm about out of ideas right now... These problems can be hard to diagnose, especially when you say the game ran fine sometime in the past. Lots can change on a Windows machine over the months... as Vista sits there and purrs (or coughs) along, as you update this or that, or download this or that. And of course, there's still that 32-bit/4GB RAM thing I mentioned.
Okay... I am starting to wax philosophical. I would suggest holding off on anything radical for a few days and let others on this board comment if they can.

Strange, I just reinstalled the game patch, started up the game and got through the redcliffe siege but, soon as I hit where those animated statues are heading to the Arl's study, bam crashed again.
I'm looking at my 3d settings and I noticed where it says Multi-Display/Mixed-GPU acceleration it was set at Global setting (multiple display performance mode) shouldn't that be set at single display performance mode? Also the maximum pre-rendered frames is at 3..wonder if I lower that down to 2 if that would help?
The only thing that has changed was I updated the video driver a few months back.
I do have some mods however the mods I have are the same exact ones that someone I know have and is not experiencing any issues at all. I even got her Chargen file to make sure..most mods are character creator and some equipment. I've also tested them and still crashed. That is what I thought at first it was a MOD, but after at least a week trying to figure this out, I've come to the conclusion it isn't a mod.
I even tried to delete all my characters, and start new. Thinking maybe I have a corrupted saved game. NOPE....I'm baffled by it.

The 1.04 patch introduced a lot of "random" crashes. Check out the "Random Crashes" thread on this forum.
From the sounds of it, the moment the game tries to render too many animations at once, or some particularly pretty animations, it chokes and dies.
I can consistently recreate the crash by trying to Paralysis Explosion, and others experience it with Wynn and her abilities. It's something to do with rendering.
Others have tried a bunch of solutions (lowering graphics settings, setting CPU affinity to 1 or lowering/raising the priority of the game, changing drivers, etc.) and a few have been able to (subjectively) prolong the periods between crashes.
Others have had nothing work.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's getting fixed before DA:O 2 comes out - the patch was out 6 months ago, and the random crashing hasn't received any special attention.

Hopefully they'll patch it once DA2 goes gold.

I'm about to reinstall, not add awakening/DLC's, and not patch the game. Play through Origins, then install awakening, patch and see if this is the solution. I would rather deal with long loading times then crashing.
Funny, I'm writing a blog entry about problems and installing the game. it's still a bit rough, but maybe it'll be useful for you. Check here.
Oh, and to me, I don't think your crashes are linked to hardware.

I'm updating the blog post, will try to add more details.
You don't use mods right? Just DAO, DAA and official DLCs?

Um, what a pain in the butt. I was cleaning up my pc before I did a reinstall and uninstalled this DVD creator program and it did something awful to my pc to where the CD wouldn't autoplay. Going through the registry, what I needed wasn't even there! Soooooooooo...I did a fresh install of vista. Doing updates right now of all drivers and stuff. I haven't even gotten to installing DAO yet.
Yeah... But I mentioned in another post... sometimes Windows runs best when it's nuked and reinstalled fresh. I just rebuild two Windows installs in the last two weeks, so I know your pain. It's like air travel. First couple of times you fly on a big commercial airliner, it's exciting. Now it's just drugery.
