I'm like 99.9% sure it isn't the mods because as I said, my friend her PC is less than mine and she has every mod running as I do and she has had zero problems. One thing I did do now that I remember was downloaded content, (I have all the DLC's) anyway, I unchecked them all, went into the addin folder and deleted them. Started game back up, and redownloaded them. I wonder if that did something. Who knows at this point!

I cleaned the disc carefully, dried it with a soft eyeglass cloth. Now what?

if that doesn't work, I'll try polishing it with brasso, very gingerly
if that doesn't work...I'll have to buy a new disc and that upsets me unless
Bioware will send me a new one...I bought this on via amazon so the invoice or past purchases it should still be there. Wonder if they would accept that, anyone know?

without paying for it? I went upstairs and put the CD in another PC and it started up fine. I need to find a driver for this CD/Dvd Rom

I don't think there's any such thing as a driver for an internal IDE or SATA optical drive... it's run native out of Windows. After all... how can you install an OS from disc if the disc drive won't run?
On rare occasions, a drive will fail to register correctly in Windows. I would suggest powering down, unplugging the drive in question, then booting into windows. After you're sure the boot is complete (wait a few minutes), power down again*, reconnect, and boot back up. If that doesn't fix it, you may need to do some registry editing. There's tons of stuff on it online.
There are *fireware* updates available for that drive... do a model number search on LG's site.

I have been online all night, and every registry that was suggested, I didn't have the problem or values wrong, and in some instances they path wasn't even there.
It seems I'm only having problems with the DAO disc. However that disc was fine in another computer (win7)
Thanks to metatheurgist I was able to download DAO from EX download manager. At least now I won't need the CD to play.
I've opened the case, unplugged the CD rom, waiting for about 10 min, then hooked it all back up, (pc is so clean, lol)
Driver dectective said I didn't need one, and if I was having problems to follow this link:
http://na7.salesforc...501A0000000LaBW
I did this and value looked fine. I suppose it must be that it is one crappy DVD/CD reader/writer!

That is the drawback from buying the first edition of any game. Do you want to hear another one? It will take six months to a year to obtain a patch, so your game will be able to function at 100%. Here is another kicker. Around the time BioWare releases 'the perfect patch' for your problems, the price of the game will drop down an estimated $20.LeraG wrote...
well Dang, I have DA2 on pre-order but if stuff like this is with that game too...I'm so done.

That said, while I also pre-ordered DA2, Deadmac has a point. I didn't start playing Origins until July... when the game had already been patched 3 or 4 times. I've had a pretty stable experience with it, overall. So, if DA2 has anything like DA:O's replay value, I am content to give it a whirl when it comes out, then play it again later in the year when the patches start flowing.

This should take me about 3 days to accomplish and hit the redcliffe crash point. If it goes well, then I will once again (3rd time) intalling one mod at a time, keeping of course a saved point to that crash.
Any other hints for testing this? Like an easier method?
That CD still will not work on my PC. It works on other's but at least I can redowload from EA Download Manager. I almost went and bought a new DAO last night. It was $29.99. I paid for the collector's edition a little over $70.00 which I'll never ever do for any game again!
I too pre-ordered DA2 but my hopes are way down already. (perhaps this will bring me a better experience lol)
I am leaning towards the problem is with 1.04 patch and a DLC. It is so strange because last before my 2nd reinstall of vista the game was running wonderful and I had over 40 mods.
Why oh Why do I have OCD to where I insist on having a clean clutter free PC. I tend to reinstall at least every 6months. LOL

(This part is probably redundant now. The only common reason seen for a female player character choice to do that has been an actual bad video card. Usually, something of Intel's. That would seem to point to a hardware failure for that 9800. Do you by chance have an older VGA around to test with? )

I've already tested it with other things just in case and it isn't hardware. Bad download? Who knows but this game worked before for me when my disc could be read in my drive. Other DVD/CD can be read, just a very few select it won't read. I Disconnected the DVD player and reconnected it also.
Mly PC is as clean as if you first bought it. No virus, No malware, no hardware, it is factory set. Didn't work
Updated Nvida card tried 2 the 260. 266 drivers..not the video card either.
I give up. One more time with the download to see.

I gave up and downloaded the game from EA Downloader..installed origins for the 3 or 4th time and it is doing good so far. Saved a test character and now installing a few DLC's.
I'm doing this process like if I just bought the game...very slow and methodical now.
Last nights problem was a bad download. Just my luck, and if it keeps up, I'm going to run down to the court house and put in a name change to Ms. Murphy Law.
So far so good, fingers crossed. I'm going to play the test character all the way up to where I first crashed. Save right before that, then play see if it crashes. Then if it doesn't, I'm going to intall one mod at a time, run the game at that save point before I experienced the past crashes and see how it goes.
I still have no idea what the issue with the DVD/CD rom is. I have some other tech people giving me suggestions and so far nothing. They asked me for make and model of my CD/DVD rom and frankly I don't know, and I sure am not up to opening the case again to find out. I'm just fed up.

I mean if it worked for NWN it might be a decent solution to some problems with this game. *shrug* Just a thought

I know, I just don't want to replace it. I do have an external HP Litescribe DVD, it is in the closet. I thought it might make the game a little slower, no? Hrm...guess I'll have to pull that out. Used it like 3 times. It is older though but new so to speak.
If I replace the DVD/CD rom my recover disc probably will not work. I think I have to replace it with the exact same one. Or Just install another one and leave that in, disable it...when I want to reinstall I can enable it. lol

If the external is a USB 2.0, it should work fine. Even if it's not, the game really only would need to peak at it for a minute... it's not running and data off it other than verify you have a legit copy of DA. Of course, since you've gone digital download, no problem.
As for recovery options, you can always make a new recovery disc in windows with the external drive.
