Hi all. Let me give you some background info first on my problem. I bought Dragon Age Ultimate Edition earlier this month on Steam and have been playing it for a while without too many problems (some random crashes here and there, likely driver related). However, I had not able to access the DLC because it was marked unauthorized. I figured I better get my money's worth on that purchase and prepared to correct that issue.

I was trying to resolve the DLC unauthorized content issue tonight and got up to the point in a fix post (http://forums.steamp...d.php?t=1680583) where I run the DAOU_UpdateAddinsXML_Steam.exe program manually as an Administrator and then DAUServiceSetup_Steam.exe to install the update service (which wasn't installed in the first place). I finished those steps and tested out running Dragon Age to see if I had the DLC authorized.

The launcher dialog screen opened up. I hit Play. A message box came up saying "Preparing to launch Dragon Age - Ultimate Edition", disappeared in half a second, then I was back at the launcher dialog screen. No errors. Clicking Play again from here had the same effect.

I'm kind of stuck now as I've run out of things to try. I've tried the following:
  • Putting everything to run as Administrator, including the DAOriginsLauncher.exe, DAOrigins.exe, and the service itself.
  • Trying to bypass the launcher by running DAOrigins.exe directly (which redirects me to DAOriginsLauncher.exe). Also tried to find hidden program start arguments that would allow me to bypass the launcher (I didn't find any).
  • Verifying the integrity of the game files through Steam. I doubted this would find anything and it didn't.
  • Looked for log files that might give a hint at what was going on, but found none relevant
Has anyone else encountered this problem before and, if so, is there a fix or workaround? It sounds like a configuration problem and I'd hate to reinstall for what could be an easy fix.

My possibly relevant system stats are the following:
  • Windows 7 64bit Professional
  • 2x AMD Radeon 6850
  • Steam and all steam related files are installed on secondary 1TB hard drive, with Windows running on a primary 128GB SSD hard drive.
I appreciate any help you might be able to provide.

Thank you,
Arathier

An update to this problem. I uninstalled Dragon Age and verified that it was gone by checking the install directory and the registry. I then re-downloaded it from Steam and reinstalled it. But this still results in the same issue. Looking into other avenues of attack.

Hi Arathier, I had the same problem about launcher reappearing after clicking 'Play'.
It may appear counter-intuitive, but I solved it by not running the .exe file 'as administrator'.
After un-checking the 'Run as Administrator', everything went fine.B)

Let me say right up I don't have the Steam version of the game.  But I can't help but wonder if the fact quoted above is part of the problem.  I perfectly understand why you installed the game on a separate drive... but from what I've read, Steam is buggy about file location anyway.

Now to hedge my bets... The only other thing I can thing of causing a launcher to fail would be the Windows User Account Control.  You may consider turning it to its lowest setting and seeing if the game launches.

Thank you to you both for replying and Gorgonom especially. I got Dragon Age running.

Let me elaborate so future players may benefit. I had tried fiddling with the WUA before but got nowhere. However, I had not tried running the executables with non-administrator permissions. I had tried reinstalling though, so I was a somewhat skeptical, especially since it was counter-intuitive, as you say.

I disabled Run as Administrator for DAOriginsLauncher.exe and DAOrigns.exe, which I must have enabled in an ill-conceived attempt to get the DLC authorized. I then ran the launcher application and clicked Play. Lo and behold it went to the game intro screen.

To be sure of what needed to run with what compatibility, I tested various permutations of having Run as Administrator on and off for the main executables. It appears that both DAOriginsLauncher.exe and DAOrigins.exe need to run without Run as Administrator turned on. As to why, I have no idea.

Thank you,
Arathier

Happy to be of service :D

edit:
If you happened to change compatibility mode for any Dragon Age executables, you could encouter the issue discussed on this Steam Forums thread:

Steam thinks I'm running it in Windows XP compatibility mode?
forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php

Long story short, changing administrative settings for steam games executables applies those settings to the Steam executable as well (steam.exe)

This step fixed the issue:
[...]
Take a look in the registry at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\AppCompatFlags\\Layers

You may notice steam.exe listed there. Removing that may help. Also
check under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE as well in case its admin set.

Check the stickies, especially "READ FIRST". They may well help you to fix your problem before you even need to post.
