Okay I have gone through and read a variety of threads, and I understand many have run this game on Windows 7 x64 fine without issue. Bully for you. However this problem is deffinately connected to that version of windows, and also the latest patch. My system has remained unchanged since I went from Windows XP to Windows 7 x64, it worked fine before and now it's crashings regularly, more so in certain parts of game. It's easy to recreate the problem simply go to the mages tower and it happens every other combat instance, where as I went through Dalish area without a hitch.

I have read all sorts of ideas on here and been trying all of them. Some things I have tried.

Updating drivers for GPU
(no luck)
Updating drivers for motherboard
(no difference)
Updating Realtek sound drivers, and even trying win drivers vs realtec, and mobo drivers
( no luck, no difference, doesn't matter.)
Changing number of cores on my Tricore processor in affinity to 2 or 1
(no luck)
Turning off frame Buffer Effects
(no difference)
Reinstalling
(no difference at all)
Underclocking video card
(no difference)
Running with -dx9
(no difference)

I also have XP still on another drive so depending on which drive I boot up with I can play game on both, no problems on XP, problems on Windows 7 64, however I have some other issues with the actual Windows xp drive so I prefer not to use that to play. If I must though I will.

Things in general to consider: My copy is through steam, I had no problems until latest patches, however I think I had not played in awhile so I went from like 1.02 to 1.04, but reinstalling is no help either.

I also did have problems with Mass Effect on XP, that was a sound bug, and changing audio setting in .ini file seemed to clear it up.....the ini files for DAO is very different, any thoughts on an ini fix would be welcome.

My system Specs:
CPU:
AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor HDZ720WFGIBOX
Mobo:
GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
GPU:
GIGABYTE GV-R489OC-1GD Radeon HD 4890
Memory:
PQI POWER Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model MAD44GUOE-X2
PSU:
Antec earthwatts EA500 500W Continuous Power ATX12V v2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC "Compatible with Core i7/Core i5" Power Supply
Drives:
Should not matter Western Digital 750gb RE2 drive
I have heard many here thinking it's a graphical effects bug, I wonder though given the freeze issues on mass effect if it could not be also teh number of voices or sounds in combat as well. If so how can you adjust on Dragon age to test? Wondering if Realtek onboard sound might be common issue.

Hey i love this game, and I want to play Dragon Age 2....but if they want me to pony up my hard earned 60 bucks for that game they better look into making sure this one gets fixed....it was their patch that caused this mess, they should fix it. If not.....guess they don't want my money for next product. Also if they say DA 2 doesn't support Windows 64, or don't do tech support for it, they better expect no purchase from me.....I am comitted to Windows 7 64 platform now, I play much more graphically intensive games then this without issue or hiccup, it's not a heat issue, and if someone mentions dust in my case let me send an imaginary slap to the back of your head. Power supply is plenty I've tested lines everything is getting proper voltage etc.....

This is NOT a hardware problem, it runs fine on XP on my system, this is NOT a PSU problem, And it ran fine on original and 1.02 patch so this HAS to be a game setting problem.... Does anyone have ANY suggestions? , because I have read through every thread and none of the "fixes" is doing anything, and I really miss being able to play my game without having to save and restart every couple of battles.

Sigismundo:

First off, I agree with you completely about the virtues of Win 7 - 64... I have friends who refuse to give up buggy old XP, and while I understand, I think Win 7 brings a lot more to the table then it takes away.   You've been exhaustive in testing your hardware, and I believe you when you say it's a software, not a hardware issue.  That said, there may be a hardware *solution*... but you have a solid system and right now, and I am at a loss to see one that you haven't already tried.

We must also agree that Win 7 is a more labor intensive OS than XP... in other words, you need more RAM and processing power to run some games on Win 7 than XP.  But again, your system is solid, so it should be able to cope well.  Your frustration is understandable.

Some thoughts, for what they're worth:

1) Your system is configured for dual-boot.  Can I safely assume you installed two iterations of DA, one in XP and one in Windows 7?  In other words, you have two copies, one on each partition?

    a) If that's correct, then perhaps the best thing is to wipe out the Win 7 install completely, including manually deleting the appropriate sub-folders in "My Documents" and "Programs (x86)" and putting in a fresh install.

  B) If that is not the case... if you're somehow running the same install with both OS's, then that could be your problem right there.

2) Are you running any third party mods?  If they ran fine with ver. 1.02, they may not with ver. 1.04.

3) Steam -- I am not familiar with games purchased via Steam (I chose to get physical copies of the game in part because of all the problems people reported on these boards).  So this is a novice question: does Steam provide some sort of diagnostic or installation repair function?

4)  Does Steam force you to use the latest patch for the game?  Could you reinstall and patch only to 1.02?

Anyway, hope that helps in some small way.

EDIT:  One final thought, and you're probably not going to find this appealing, but at some point with major softwre issues, I will nuke Windows completely and do a fresh software install.  Normally I do this when making a major hardware upgrade.  Even Win 7, for all its virtues, leaves a lot of crap in the registry when things are installed and uninstalled.  I am not brave enough, or patient enough, to manually edit the registry-- hence the nuclear option.

Thanks for advice, sadly it does not help :( Also I can't lower the number of cores in that mode, which I also really wonder about as alot of people who have had issues have listed tricore systems.

Yes I have steam on both systems, and the game has been downloaded on both, These are not different partitions on same drive though I have one 750gb drive on xp and one on windows 7 x64, so which ever I make my boot drive in bios.....very convenient, and may be what saves me, as I may just have to play on xp drive.

Tried that fresh install does not help.

Not the issue different installs on different hardrives under different os's

I very recently started running that retrainer mod that allows you to go back and rechoose your talents etc, but I was having problems before i installed it, it did not increase any more then it had been doing it before.

Sadly Steam does pretty much force you to download the latest version which usually makes sense because latest version has fewer bugs...except in the case of DAO. Steam really is teh same copy as any retail box version, the only real difference is the method of install, youc an run all commands etc, some people gripe just because they've never bothered to look into how to set up things for steam, you can use launcher, daupdater, command lines etc on it as well. The only thing I can't do is go back to earlier patch....wish I could.

Yes and that is part of the reason I hate playing on the XP version, that drive has gone through some upgrades, and even tweaked, and cleaned does perform as well as my Windows 7 install.....so playing on XP means booting up just for this game, and if I am say working in Windows 7 64 which I usually am, every time I want to play DAO I have to reboot and set the XP drive as my boot disk.....so it's just annoying and a pain in the rear.....I'm thinking I just need to take my saves and start playing this on my xp drive.....it's sad that after all the people who have posted probs there doesn't seem any action by developers to look at patch and what they changed that could have caused this.

I really hope they get this sorted out before DA 2,

What is more baffling to me is MASS Effect 1 and 2 work flawlessly on Win 7 64.......

My gut tells me this may be audio issue....I know Mass Effect had a problem on Xp with number of voices and some realtek onboard sound, However I don't see settings in Dragon age ini to change this.

Still looking for suggestions, I'd like to think if I can solve this I could help others, as having the exact same system and two seperate installs on both xp and windows 7 x64 drives does allow me rule a lot of issues out.

I'm having similar issues. Though I just had someone tell me to look into a program called virtual box. Apparently you can run a different version of windows on the same drive, through the same desktop. I don't know too much about it so I can't give you too many details. It might be something to look into. Good luck!

I wouldn't recommend playing game through that easier to just keep xp diskdrive on system you can boot on.
In any case, I have a short term fix but it makes me angry that I have to use it. If I turn the Graphic details from "Very High" to "High" it goes away.....which ticks me off because my system is easily able to handle higher graphics and even this game on very high in XP......something about Windows 7 64 and this game won't allow it......PLEASE fix this by DA2, or you're going to have a lot of PO'd customers, as most higher end system builders are all going to Win 7 64....just pitiful.

In any case this is deffinately a graphical issue and can happen anywahere but is most easily reproduced in mages tower.

I'm going to just take a wild guess and say this game is not as compatible with 64 bit windows 7 as it should be. I have Win 7 64 Home and also have the same crashing problem. Now that you mentioned it, I would have to agree the circle tower is the worst for crashing. Since that's where I've been all day it would explain why the problem suddenly got so much worse. I'm thinking this is something I will just have to deal with unless they come out with some sort of fix especially for the Win 7 64-bit OS.

Respectfully, I disagree.  I've played the game exclusively on Windows 7 64 since I got it in July with no problems, save for an issue with a new graphcis card.  I mean this as friendly advice:  be VERY careful what you infer or deduce from these message boards.  Yes, people have had problems-- across all platforms.  But if it's true that there are a million copies of this game out there, then even if only a third of them are PC versions, you're not finding 300,000 people on this site complaining....

In other words, the vast majority of people come here *only* if they're having problems.  No one who's successfully playing the game has any real incentive to visit a PC tech forum.  I've stuck around because I found the help here vaulable and I'd like to get back.

Your frustration is understandable-- but please remember that everyone's computer is, in some ways, a unique ecosystem.  I don't have the same programs, drivers, or updates running on my machine as you, and neither of us have the same hardware configuration as Sigismundo.  Just because we have similar OS's doesn't mean the OS is the common problem.

As to your specific issue, I think you also posted in a different thread.  I'll try to make some suggestions there.

You make a good point. It would be difficult (if not impossible) to create a game that works perfectly on every person's computer.  I have some experience in application developement (mostly on the Q/A side) and I know that it is impossible to predict, test, or plan for every possible scenario especially with a large application. I can sometimes be quick to jump to conclusions but will easily back down from them if someone disproves my theory, which you have:). Anyway, I will leave this thread alone now and wait for your suggestions on my thread. Thanks.

I feel your pain. I have the exact same problem as you. I too can dual boot to my XP and have flawless gameplay. The only way I got it to work on my win 7 64bit was to set my tri core to use CPU # 0. I have gone through all the hoops as you have and have given up looking for a real solution. Hopefully you will find something that will work for you.

Now this *is* interesting... I have seen a few references to game instability on tri-core (triple-core? thrice-core?) AMD processors.  I know when I was shopping for a new motherboard, a some manufacturers put out bios updates to specifically address some three-core chip instability.

Because my ISP only offers one truly affordable family combo pack of landline plus standard cable TV plus internet, I am stuck with only a 384 K bps ~~ inadequate for large downloads in a reasonable timeframe ~~ connection.  Thus, I stick to hard copy retail versions, and only add DLC if it is handled like a proper disk-based expansion.  Since the Ultimate Edition has all of the same bad features of ordinary DLC, I won't buy it now.

That is by way of saying, you may wish to discount the source in this instance, as this is something I cannot describe from direct experience.

Anyway, no matter how or where you made an original game purchase, the EA Store's digital version is automatically also available to you.  It is entirely possible that there may be a way to stop with patch 1.02A using the EA store's download, so perhaps that is an answer.  If not, sorry for wasting your time.

I said in my initial post I understand some people are able to run in windows 7 x64 without issue. However that does not make it any less at fault. Like all computer issues that are tough to figure out it's usually a mix of several issues that make the problem. This particular issue is almost entirely dependent on the user having Windows 7 x64....in that respect it is a problem connected to that OS. More so in that a coupel of us have tested and found the exact same hardware on Xp does NOT have this issue. As to why some people do not have an issue in that OS? Well if we knew the answer to that we might no how to fix it. If your ea dup on this youw ill find this is a VERY VERY common issue however and I'm not so sure it isn't an issue with half of the people playing on Windows 7 64 as the posts are VERY numerous considering most average users are on either XP or a 32 bit install of windows 7.

i thought i had fixed it in that by lowering graphics from very high to high I was able to complete mage tower.....well at least until the top, in the final boss fight even that could not save me, and made a hard battle that much harder to complete for crashes. So still no real fix.

Things I have noticed, it always happens in combat and appears to be related to spell effects, MANY of the people having issues DO have tricores....but not all....the number that do make me wonderif maybe some crashes are from tricore and some are from something else. This game definnately is not tricore friendly given the number of posts by tricore systems for crashing. (though I never had issue on tricore in xp)  However even by lowering to one core I still crash in the mage tower.

I really wish we could do some sort of poll as to what hardware people have who have this problem...so we can find a common factor.... I think I will make one.

You know that Win7-64 is not an officially supported OS for this game right?

I have the same problems described here.

Running Win 7 64-bit.

AMD PHENOM II X4 965 BE 3.4GHZ 6MB SOCKET AM3

SAPPHIRE RADEON HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E 2XDVI/HDMI/DP

CREATIVE SOUND BLASTER X-FI TITANIUM PCI-E

ASUS M4A89TD PRO 890FX AM3 ATX

I got crashes about once an hour or so, until the mage tower where it happens constantly. About every 10-15 mins to give an estimate. I gave up on the game there. All crashes seem to have the same cause, barring one which was of a different variety, namely visual c++ complaining about a pure virtual function call.

I have Vista 64 bit and it's the same thing. Crashes regularly every second hour or so. Also had an instance in the Fade (from Magic Tower) where it couldn't run for 15 minutes before it crashed.

I have started rebooting my comp every time, since it seems to reset the crashings and allow me to play a few hours or so again.

Sucks bigtime.

This is NOT a hardware problem, it runs fine on XP on my system, this is NOT a PSU problem, And it ran fine on
original and 1.02 patch so this HAS to be a game setting problem...4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM...

Windows 7 is also not your problem. 4GB of RAM may be your problem. Since Windows XP requires 512MB of RAM to work, you would have more memory available to run "Dragon Age: Origins" and the graphics card.

Windows XP = 512MB RAM
Windows 7 = 2GB RAM

Your system has = 4GB RAM

Half of your system's resources are put aside for the operating system. When 'MS Vista' first arrived on the scene, computers with 4GB RAM were being sold on the market. After a few months in the consumer's hands, people found out that 4GB RAM was not enough to run 'Vista' successfully. So, 'Windows 7' was created to tone down the RAM usage (among other things). Even though 'Windows 7' still uses 1.5 to 2GB of RAM, how the kernel deals with that information has changed.

...but, why does it not work on a new operating system and computer?
It is rather simple. "Dragon Age: Origins" was created to run on a 'single processor' with a 'dual core'; thus, the game was made to run on a 32bit OS and 32bit computer. 'Dual Core' processors were created and released right when we switched over to the new 64bit aechitecture; thus, you are able to find them on both 32bit and 64bit motherboards. Majority of the computers in which came out with a the 'dual core processor' schemetic were 32bit systems. Technically, they were created at the end of the 32bit technological cycle.

Single processor with a dual core = Last of the 32bit computers.

Even though you set the compatibility and core setting to comply, you didn't upgrade your RAM to at least 6GB to compensate for a new operating system and technology.

BioWare's Minimum System Requirements for "DAO":
PC Processor Type: Intel® Core™ 2 "Single processor" or equivalent, AMD Athlon64 processor
PC Processor Speed: 1.6GHz
PC Operating System: Windows XP with Service Pack 3, Windows Vista with Service Pack 1, Windows 7
PC System Memory: 1GB RAM
PC Hard Drive Space: 24GB
PC Video: 256MB ATI Radeon X850 video card
PC Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card
PC Drive Type and Speed: DVD-ROM

When BioWare made up the recommended and minimum system requirements for "Dragon Age: Origins", they didn't understand how significant the operating system and technology had changed.

'Windows 7' needs 2 GB of RAM to run and "Dragon Age : Origins" needs another 2GB of RAM (to run on 'Windows 7); therefore, you would need over 4GB to run them together successfully. Don't forget that graphics cards also use a significant amount of RAM. In order to run everything together smoothly, you would need at least 6GB of RAM.

You can tell that BioWare is a little confused. God only knows what the real specs will be for "Dragon Age II".

When it comes to playing the game on 'Windows 7' and 'Windows Vista', BioWare's recomended specs for "Dragon Age: Origin" should be the minimum specs.

BioWare messed up.

If I were to write the requirements for "Dragon Age: Origins":
(running on Windows 7 & Vista)

Minimum/Reccomended System Requirements:
OS: Windows Vista/Windows 7
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 (2.5 GHz)/AMD Phenom II X3 720 (2.8 GHz)
Memory: 2 GB RAM & (4GB RAM for OS and Graphics Card) = 6GB
Hard Drive: 20 GB Free
Video Memory: 512 MB (1GB Srongly Suggested) - (nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS/ATI Radeon HD 3850)
Sound Card: DirectX 10 Compatible

Additional Requirements:
~ If your computer has more than two cores, set "DAO's" affinity (in the task manager) to 2 cores.
~ Patch game up to version 1.04.
~ Upgrade ATI Radeon drivers. (Set graphics card fan speed to 70%.)
~ Downgrade nVidia drivers. (Set graphics card fan speed to 70%.)

Just so you know. I am running the game on an eight core system, and I have only seen three crashes within 29 hours of gameplay. After I upgrade my ATI graphics card drivers and controller, I have only seen a very-very few game issues. I am 75% through the game.

asking the user to manually downgrade and 'fix' the issues the developers made isn't really my cup of tea.

If what I am experiencing with DA:Ultimate of frequent crashes is a sign of what I can expect in the future from Bioware, I'm not sure I want to be part of that future with my money.

I hear you man. What drives me nuts is that "Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition" was released in 2010; thus, BioWare should have (a) fixed the incompatibility issues or (2) not release the game knowing full well that those issues exist. Since many people with the latest technologies bought the game, they cannot return it if there is an incompatibility issue. Its almost like stealing or committing fraud.

If you look at "Dragon Age II's" system requirements, they are practically the same as the first game's requirements. I would take the recommended and turn them into the minimum. They didn't work for "Dragon Age: Origins", so I expect them not to work for the sequel.

"Dragon Age II" System Requirements:

Recommended:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz Processor or equivalent
CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 Triple core 2.8 GHz or equivalent
RAM: 2GB (4 GB Vista and Windows 7) <---- They didn't include the system RAM used by the graphics card.
Video: ATI 3850 512 MB or greater
Video: NVIDIA 8800GTS 512 MB or greater
DirectX 11: ATI 5850 or greater
DirectX 11: NVIDIA 460 or greater

"MS Vista/Windows 7" = 2GB of system RAM
"DAO II" = 1.5GB of system RAM (between the reccomended and minimum requrements)
Graphics Card = 512MB to 1GB of system RAM (rough estimate to run card)
--------------------------
Total = 4.5 GB of system RAM

So, where is the other 512MB of system RAM in the specs? Not to mention room for wiggle. Its the same problem people are having with "Dragon Age: Origins". System requirements for Windows 7 are not practical.
