Okay, so I've just reinstalled windows 7 64 ultimate on my PC, and I vaguely remember that before I reinstall ME1/2 that I need to install a directx redist?  Apart from getting the latest drivers - is there anything else I need?  Which DirectX redist should I get?

Having installed Windows 7 you should already have DX11 installed. You should not need to do anything else, but then it won't hurt downloading and installing the DX11 redist from the MS support site.
(A bit naughty posting this question here!)

It is? I vaguely remember ME1 not working despite DX11 being installed - seems relevant enough!  Thanks for posting, but I could've sworn dx11 doesn't run dx9 games for some reason...

Everyone ignore this misinformation.

Neither Dx10 nor Dx11 is adequately backward compatible to be used alone.

You are correct.  The other comment was based on bad information.  The game comes with the version of Dx9 that it needs already on the DVD.
