Hi all,
Just earned my Helm of the Red by saving everyone in Redcliffe Village in the Attack at Nightfall for the 1st time, largely in part to all the posts I read here.
Before, I've consistently kept the defenders of the bridge alive (Sir Perth & knights, Dwyn & thugs, the elf spy). But even after reloads, almost all the Militia by the Chantry die every time (I save only the mayor and the lookout).
This time, with a newly made mage, not only did I keep everyone alive, but I did it the 1st time around without much difficulty. Here's the advice I took from you, then put them together like so:
The party - My mage (controller), Alistair (tank 1), Shale (tank 2), Wynne (healer)
The spells - The full Mind Blast line (i.e. Crushing Prison) + the Glyph line except for Neutralisation
Slight trick - I used a haste salve from random loot when I had to run from the bridge to the Chantry
What a difference that made. Previously, I thought it impossible to save everyone without getting everyone high level by doing Redcliffe last. I think I was only level 9 and it was a relatively straight-forward fight, no problem.
TL;DR - I kept Redcliffe all alive, thanks to your tips, feels good man.
Just saved everyone at Redcliffe Village, thanks to your advice

Congradulation. You know, I've always wonder if anything would be different if I kill everyone during the defense on purpose by throwing fireball/storm of the century at the npc...

AFAIK, you gain more items and gold, but lose on the cool helm and ring from the barkeep; uncertain of XP.

Its good to load up on ranged damage characters. I took Sten, my PC mage, Leliana and Morrigan. Sten basically took aggro, but a lot of the time he didn't even get within melee range as the three girls would drop the undead before they even got near the stockade. Add in the village archers and its just ranged party time.

Shale and the Respec mod may be even better, plus you lose Mr Attitude for the win.

I've done it twice. I like it when Wynne casts earthquake over by the bay where they come from, and my other mage summons a winter storm. They can't get out of the storm because they keep getting knocked down. Takes a bit of their health away before they get to the chantry.

I use my dog, Sten and Morrigan. By the time I get to Redcliffe, Sten usually has Stunning Blows and Morrigan usually has Cone of Cold.
It takes quite a bit of micromanagement, but I can usually chain stun with Mind Blast / Dread Howl / Dirty Fighting (I play a City Elf Duelist) / Stunning Blows and then flash freeze large groups of zombies and the militia and my melee do the rest.
All I have to do is make sure that no militia are in the path of the CoC.
TBH, the hard part isn't even keeping the militia alive... It is training the zombies coming down from the castle towards the mill so that Perth and his Knights don't charge into the oil fire to confront them.
I hate not being able to have my friendly NPC's hold their position.

For additional incentive to save everyone, the post-battle cutscene when getting a personal reward from Bella is a hoot; much better when there are more witnesses!

It's a lot easier at the top if you don't use the oil fire.

Yep. Traps are not traps if your allies blunder into them. Hopefully NPC retardation will be dealt with in DA2.
