I have been searching the wiki and forums, but I can't really find an answer to this question.

What will the different difficulty levels affect in the game? I heard one of the things affected will be the effects of friendly fire (none, partially, full damage), but what other things will change?
I am asking this, because I am planning to play on 'hard', but am afraid that the game could turn out too difficult for me. I remember getting my ass kicked in Baldur's Gate way too many times and didn't find Mass Effect easy either.

Hard will probably be quite hard as the enemies will do more damage and get smarter probably..and then there's the friendly fire.

Hard is designed for people who are familiar with/good at the BG/NWN series. It will have full friendly fire, while Normal will have 50% friendly fire. As well as that, Hard will show an increase in enemy AI and give them better resistances, though I beleive their actual health/armor/damage wont change. Nightmare will see an increase in everything though.

Note that normal on consoles has 0 friendly fire for one reason or another.

Start on Normal and work your way up/down as appropriate. One of the common items to come out of the reviews we've seen is that the game is generally quite difficult, so "Hard" is a real challenge even for the experienced player.

I'll be starting on Normal.

Does anyone know if there will be a nightmare or similar unlock once you get through on hard? Not that I'd ever probably play it, but I'm curious?

AFAIK all 4 levels are available from the start: Easy, Normal, Hard and Nightmare.

It would be the first time when I will try to play on Hard difficulty (I used to play on Normal). To date, it hasn't just been worth it since the difficulty has always been determined by the damage the enemies did and not by the level of AI. But having the AI increased proportionally to the level of difficulty dictates me to at least try hard and perhaps Die Hard.

The other argument is that DA:O is supposed to be tuned on Hard level whereas the vast majority of games is tuned on Normal. I would like to play the game as much according to its design as possible.

Where did you hear this? Doesn't sound right.

My understanding is that you can start on hard but turn down the difficulty at any time from the options menu. So, it's not like you're doomed.

Huh. Seems weird that they'd call the standard difficulty setting Hard.

Anyway, thanks for the link.

The difficulty sounds pretty spot on. One of my biggest bones with Mass Effect was on the hardest settings the enemy was still dumb but you just had to load 7 buhjillion shots into them.

To be fair, he does say "Hard Difficulty represents the way the game is meant to be played from the view of a veteran." - by all means start on hard, but there have been a lot of reports in reviews that the game is plenty hard enough (depending on your skill, class, talent choices and party of course!) on normal mode...

Well, at least potion would not serve only as a means to fill the inventory.

Blame the casual gamers for that. They expect many gamers new to these kinds of games to start on Normal, so they wanted to have normal be easy enough for them to handle. Just be thankful Hard and Nightmare are still available, and haven't been dumbed down to appeal to casual gamers.

Thanks for the info guys. To summarize, this was in the wiki link posted above:

Casual - No friendly fire. Easy AI

Normal - 50% damage from friendly fire, traps, and other abilities. Moderate AI

Hard - 100% damage from friendly fire, traps, and other abilities. Full AI. Opponents hit harder.

Nightmare - 100% damage from friendly fire, traps, and other abilities. Full AI. Opponents hit harder and additional resistances.

With hard being the "default" setting, with neither the player's party nor the enemies having special bonuses or limitations.

Based on what the devs have said, slightly more accurate would be this:

Casual - No friendly fire. Easy AI. Enemies do reduced damage.
Normal - 50% damage from friendly fire, traps, and other abilities. Moderate AI. Enemies do slightly reduced damage.
Hard - 100% damage from friendly fire, traps, and other abilities. Full AI. Opponents hit for full damage.
Nightmare
- 100% damage from friendly fire, traps, and other abilities. Full AI, tuned to be extra agressive.
Opponents hit slightly harder and have additional resistances.

hey, so armor, attack, defense and hit chances are still the same from normal to nightmare? I could have sworn there's a much higher likelihood of missing on NM.

Hard isn't really that difficult. Some of the random encounters and mass battles are very tough. But that's mostly early on. Later it becomes pretty easy for the most part. Not easy enough to just sleepwalk through all fights, but not hard enough to force more than one reload either.

so back to my earlier question, does difficulty affect the attack/defense stats?

This page from Georgs Missing manual has lots of information about difficulty levels (for the PC version)

it seems odd, from short stints on nightmare to test the waters, spells seem to be resisted a lot more than the ~3% resistance bump that website implies, and they (at least seem to) do noticeably less damage.
