So is there anyone other than Ghost Lighting who isn't absolutely appalled by this news?  Out of all the Final Fantasy games to sequelize why choose the WORST game in the series?  It's not like this one is going to be better since they're assigning that arrogant schmuck Toriyama to lead the project AGAIN!  Everything that guy touches is poison and I'm not just talking about Final Fantasy XIII, the new Parasite Eve game, The 3rd Birthday is a crappy corridor shooter too.  I know, I've played the import and it SUCKS!

If there is anything positive about this news it is that this is our chance as consumers to finally show Square-Enix just how little we think of them.  Most of us bought FInal Fantasy XIII on the merit of it being a FInal Fantasy game and didn't realize how badly it sucked until we actually played it, that's understandable.  However shame me once...you know how it goes.

The game will inevitably get it's paid for 40/40 perfect review in Famitsu and make a profit on it's Japanese sales but lets take the moral high ground as Western gamers and refuse to put up with Square/Enix's crap anymore!

Seriously....FINAL FANTASY XIII-2!?  I can't get over how bad of an idea this is.  Why not a Final Fantasy VII remake!?  THAT is what fans have been asking for!  Or better yet how about making Final Fantasy XV and making sure it doesn't SUCK this time.

At least we probably won't see this game until 2016 at the earliest since they'll probably scrap it half way through to develop it for the next-generation consoles.  Even then it will probably STILL be released before FInal Fantasy Versus XIII.

Just the thought that Vanille, Hope and Snow are going to be in another game...I don't know if I can handle it!

I can't find the link but someone on the original VII team said it would take ten years to do the remake justice

On topic, I'm sceptical but I think it could work. The gameplay sucked but I did really like the world and characters. Still Versus XIII is the one I'm really looking forward to.

Can't this series die already?

If Square/Enix treats Final Fantasy VII the way they've treated the rest of the Final Fantasy series maybe I don't want to see a remake afterall.

Then again, Final Fantasy VII is the most critically acclaimed game in the series, Hell it's the reason why JRPG's became popular in the US in the first place, there is no way they could possibly butcher it....

Oh....nevermind.

Nooooooooooooooo

FFXIII was horrible, they should just dumb the sequel, start from scratch and make completely new FF game.
Remember when FF games were fun? Exploration, airships and actually likeable characters.

Last Halloween a kid came to my door trick-or-treating and I offered him a choice between a tootsie roll or my copy of Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360. The kid took the tootsie roll without hesitation.

The game now serves as a convenient 3 piece coaster set for my Bioware coffee mug.

I have a feeling that FFXIII-2 will be fan-service fodder. /is instantly reminded of the atrocity known as FFX-2, just because of the naming

From what I've read, FFXIII-2 is coming out this year in Japan . If so, then the import will probably be just as swift (like FFXIII around 3 months to localise it). So it's around a 2011-early 2012 release date max probably.

FF7 is one of those legendary fanboy games in the west which came out at a time when not many people were playing JRPG's so it'll always be something that is thought of as better than anything else Square Enix push out. No matter what they do and what demands they give into nobody will like the game so they might as well just make whatever they feel like.

I don't think FFXIII is really that bad. The story is interesting enough, The pace of the game is really good i always feel like i am doing something on it. The main complaint i hear about it is "But it's linear! I guess now everyone expects every RPG ever to have a massive open world with a million non sensical side quests like helping lost children when you are supposively on a major quest.

From what i can recall other FF games were pretty linear anyways. And that's not really a bad thing it gives me a sense of purpose when i am playing i know what my goals are and i can quickly advance to it. Fallout 3 is a wonderfull looking game for example but it takes forever to do anything usefull on it and most of the time i find myself wondering around doing nothing or just figuring out what the hell i am supposed to be doing.

Sometimes i just want to enjoy a game without having to find some person i'm supposed to deliver something to, to get something, to open something,to get an item i need to advance. You get the picture.

I'll gladly play another FF XIII i'm sure it can be no worse than FF X-2

My only complaint was the battle system was just boring. Since the autobattle was so effective there was no point to trying to select the move yourself 95% of the time. the fact that it came down to pressing X repeatedly with the occasional R1 (or 360 equivalent) took alot of the fun out of it.

The illusion of choice was removed, you felt like a passenger to someone else's story. Even if it was a good story it still felt hollow because of this. If they improve the battles and give me a bit of freedom then I'll be all to happy.

Edit: just remembered something. One of the major thoughts I had on the story was I wanted to know why cocoon was built and who the being the fal'cie were trying to call was. I remember thinking that they were going to have a big reveal at the end that cocoon was essentially a space ship, the cocoon fal'cie were the ships life support systems, pulse was a new planet they were sent to colonise and the pulse fal'cie were made to terraform it.

I was a bit disappointed that there was no mention of any of their purposes as it seemed to me there were hints to this throughout the story.

Considering how long it took them to make FFXIII, i'm surprised time is the issue.

I think they could have probably comprimised a bit on that by giving you an option at the start to have auto battle options or not. It is quite a simplified system that long time RPG players will find redundant but it's good for beginers who maybe don't know much about these kinda games to make a start and play through a game. If they had that option then beginers would be able to go back and turn it off.

Are they purposefully trying to run the company into the ground? They just slashed their earnings projections from $110 million to $10 million for this next year mostly due to poor reviews and sales of FFXIII and FFXIV Online.

Poor sales for FFXIII? I wouldn't call 6 million sales poor.

Yeah, and they even DELAYED Deus Ex:Human Revolution to next year even though the game is practically finished according to the developers.

They delay Deus Ex:Human Revolution to 2012 yet they plan to shovel out this Final Fantasy XIII sequel crap by the end of the year.

UN-FRIGGIN-BELIEVABLE!

And amongst those 6 million consumers were many many disappointed Final Fantasy fans who bought the game on the merit of it being a Final Fantasy game.
Those gamers will not be as forgiving this time unless Square/Enix pulls off a miracle.  Final Fantasy XIII sold well but it came at the price of forever tarnishing the franchise.  The Final Fantasy name is no longer invincible, at least not in the west and user scores of the game reflect this.

I remember the Matrix Reloaded was a box office hit despite being a crap movie.  Not surprisingly, the next one, Matrix Revolutions performed below expectations.
That is what happens when you become arrogant and think a name alone can sell a title.  It only works for so long.

Dammit!  My quote is stuck is quote and stuck in quote!  ARRRGHHH!

Hey you guys remember the last time Square/Enix made a sequel to a sequel?

Yeah, I apologize for reminding you guys about that.

I've spent years trying to forget that!

To be honest while I greet this with disgust theres a very very very very slim chance that it won't be THAT bad if they get rid of every character except Lightning, learn their lesson about the whole corridor thing and do something about that exp system that tried to fool you into thinking you had choice when it was really just another corridor. My biggest problem was the characters in FF13, they were so f*cking annoying and I still maintain Snow is the worst character in the history of gaming. Lightning was slightly less annoying than the others only because I shared her hatred of Snow.

Don't even mention the new Parasite Eve, I want a proper sequel not a psp game!! Why would I want to play an RPG on a handheld? Also I'm pretty sure Deus Ex is still coming out this year.

Technically Final Fantasy X is not a sequal. They are self contained games. X-2 was the sequal to X which is not a sequal.

Well in any case, I'm sure Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be just like the first game, a menu-driven graphical anime for people who don't know how to play games and overflowing with corny Japanese melodrama.
