FF7 is one of those legendary fanboy games in the west which came out at a time when not many people were playing JRPG's so it'll always be something that is thought of as better than anything else Square Enix push out. No matter what they do and what demands they give into nobody will like the game so they might as well just make whatever they feel like.
I don't think FFXIII is really that bad. The story is interesting enough, The pace of the game is really good i always feel like i am doing something on it. The main complaint i hear about it is "But it's linear! I guess now everyone expects every RPG ever to have a massive open world with a million non sensical side quests like helping lost children when you are supposively on a major quest.
From what i can recall other FF games were pretty linear anyways. And that's not really a bad thing it gives me a sense of purpose when i am playing i know what my goals are and i can quickly advance to it. Fallout 3 is a wonderfull looking game for example but it takes forever to do anything usefull on it and most of the time i find myself wondering around doing nothing or just figuring out what the hell i am supposed to be doing.
Sometimes i just want to enjoy a game without having to find some person i'm supposed to deliver something to, to get something, to open something,to get an item i need to advance. You get the picture.
I'll gladly play another FF XIII i'm sure it can be no worse than FF X-2
Yes i agree with you for some thingies.
Sidequest .
The major problem with sidequest it's because i feel like i need to do them .. If a children run to me and ask me for help(Like the kid in fallout 3 for the ants quest) .I know i will have a reward or fame or i might miss something cool and unique.
For me it's somewhat break the immersion because it's force me to metagame.Sure you can answer with the whole
*I don't have time for this* .
But in fact you have the time for this. There's no chrono or no sense of urgency in most video game. There's no calendar (Although there's actually one in GTA4)
The first fallout had a chrono though . If i remember you had like 1 years to find the water device and if you failed something bad happened. So you just could not mess around. They have found a way to do this ... In most linear and corridor game . But in RPG it's seem to be difficult. to satisfy both side.
But gamer hated it (Fallout 1 chrono) because they want to take their time .
So now you can wander aimlessy in most rpg . So the main quest always seem to be in stop mode while you do something else. You still hear about npc reminding you but it's has no consequence on the main plot.
In Fallout 3 they gave us not a very urgent main mission . But still your father will be waiting for you at the laboratory even if you explore the entire wastelands. So how do you mix both?In Starcraft 2 you often have timer .. Would it's work on a RPG without it being a corridor game?So the story in RPG aren't in real time .Weird.
Imagine if it's real time?
Three dog - Hey it's Three dog .. i heard James Sacrificied himself for us all! His son still alive though .. I wonder where he might be
PC - I'm beating on RAIDERS SOMEWHERE in the WASTELANDS .LEAVE ME ALONE!
