Okay, let me start off by saying I have a desktop that runs Dragon Age just fine. However, I put it on my laptop and of course recieved the "Failed to detect a supported video card." error message. Is there a command line switch or some other workaround that will skip this check and attempt to run the game anyway?

PS: I know what "failed to detect a supported video card" means, sooo can we skip the lecturing and get straight to helpful posts? :P

I'm not sure if the the executable checks or just the configuration utility so you can try this: Navigate to your install directory then bin_ship and launch daorigins.exe directly.

Thank you, it actually didn't occur to me that it might be the launcher doing the check, I tired that and it turns out it's the executable. I know some games come with command switches to skip various checks that occur when it loads, I'm hoping Dragon's Age has some of those. I can't recall what games or what the commands were, it's been so long since I've cared to try something like that. BUT I've definitely seen 'em before.

You might want to take a peak at the config files, I cannot remember exactly which directory they are in. Either the base directory or the Documents folder.

Will do that. :)

I'm having the exact same problem, and nither launching directly or messing with config options have changed the message at all.

My video card is an Intel, and in the read-me they did say they didnt officially support Intel... enough to make it so I cant play?

Nothing in the xml files related to the checking done by the actual program, sadly.

Intel video cards are not really considered a card for playing games with.

It's worked just fine for other games I've been playing, this is the first one that actually prevented me from actually getting into the game with it...

Let's refine the terminalogy here.  Intel chips are inadequate by a great margin for high intensity 3D gaming.  They work for 2D and limited graphics types of entertainment, such as the original WoW and most MMOs, which have very low requirements.  When not filtered out by virtue of various technical omissions, they are slower than snails compared to mainline gaming hardware.

Incidentally, I am pretty sure that the definition of "Cross-Posting" is intended to include prohibitions against posting the same question in both the old Bioware ("Legacy") forums, as well as these new EA forums.  I have just seen this same post on the old forums.  Where I replied that no known command line switch has been either publicly revealed or privately discovered, TTBOMK.

Um.. since you don't know I guess you installed all your programs to the default folder then?

Try "C:\\Program Files\\", Dragon Age should be in there somewhere.

Intel integrated video doesnt work well for this game, or many, many others I've played. They just arent designed for high end gaming. more minor graphics and word processing.

The question here isn't "how well does my card perform"... I know it's not a serious gaming card, but I would like the option to see what it's capable of. I know some people think that their opinions are facts, and therefore should close a subject, but nobody knows everything, despite their apparently firm beliefs to the contrary. I don't see "moderator" or anything else interesting attached to your name, so I can only thank you for pointing out that after posting on forums that are shutting down in a few days, I was intelligent enough to post on the ones that will remain.

Disableing AA did the trick for me.

Running at 4x AA now.

8x gave me that "Failed to detect a supported video card" error.

perhaps it failed to detect a card because you don't have one (in that what you do have is an unsupported integrated GPU).

Which pretty much explains the issue and should give you no cause to become ****ty with people who only point out the obvious.

It is quite fact, your card is not capable of rendering the game. The game literally cannot load with your card. Hence the error message. No matter how much you wish to alter the laws of physics, you cannot. Have a good day.

Thank you everyone who ignores the question and tells me things about my laptop I already know. Then calls *me* blankitty. I do have to say you're wrong saying that my card *can't* run the game. The program checks the card and generates the error message before loading any actual graphics. Which is why only a workaround the check would satisfy me as to whether or not I can run the game at *any* level. Feel free to keep copying and pasting previous irrelevant comments though, as it will keep this topic bumped. :)

The answer to your question is, "No, there is no such thing as a command line workaround for not detecting a graphics card"

Then my question becomes "has anyone found ANY workaround for not detecting a graphics card?".

I would have been satisfied if given a dialog box, i.e., "DA failed to detect a supported video card. Attempting to run DA with your current configuration may cause unexpected results. Do you wish to continue loading DA?" but telling me I can't test the limits of my hardware is a slap in my nerd face.
