I would have been satisfied if given a dialog box, i.e., "DA failed to detect a supported video card. Attempting to run DA with your current configuration may cause unexpected results. Do you wish to continue loading DA?" but telling me I can't test the limits of my hardware is a slap in my nerd face.

What card do you have?
If it doesn't support high enough pixel shaders (3.0, AFAIK) - and it's likely it doesn't - then no amount of cajoling can ever make it work. It would be like trying to run the PS3 version on your computer.

If you want to feed line noise into your graphics card and see if it somehow manages to make sense of it, you can do that with some wire strippers and a soldering iron. You don't need Dragon Age to do it for you.

Given that you have a laptop, it'd be pretty painful to upgrade unless you know what you're doing or know someone else who can do it for you.

My recommendation would be to buy some parts off newegg or something and put together a cheap-but-quality desktop machine. For less than the price of a console (assuming you buy smart) you could build something that'll run Dragon Age, and you'll also be set for any other current-gen games that your laptop doesn't support.

I must say that exactly the same problem occurs with my ATI Radeon HD 3870, with which I have tried every Windows Update/ Driver installation/Card configuration combination (took me 2 days...) during which I got to start it once. After a restart of the system, nothing could move the game to start again.. as they say, my latin ends here  -
*Has anyone got an idea how to get DA to swallow my graphics card, if necessarily by force?* (I mean, it's a perfect card to game with....)

thanks in advance. Saviour gets tons of cookies and a joyous *CLUCK! CLUCK!*

Amuana, have you at any point reinstalled either Direct3D (Dx9 and/or Dx10), or the game itself?  Drivers, Dx9, and the game all have to be working together.

P. S.  I've seen numerous reports here on these forums about gamers with the HD 3870 experiencing various difficulties (and needing to DOWNCLOCK the card's speed) and let's hope that the Search funtion is repaired soon, so that you can check those out.

Meanwhile, use Google or Yahoo with a site redirection criteria added:

sadly, it didn't work..

expenses so far:

110.- CHF for a good game with a idiotically programmed engine

240.- CHF for a new graphics card which more than fulfils the minimum requirements

~20 hours of my time spent trying to configure my computer à 50.- CHF (time not spent working)

1000.- CHF

which about amounts to 1360.- CHF total expenses for a game which does not still work... If it goes on like that, EA owes me at least a BG Dragon Age mod, which would have even better graphics :)

there used to be a program (i've forgotten the name, but i think it was made by 3dfx) that allowed for video card emulation. I used to use it to get NWN2 to run on my old Mac Mini Intel.

The problem is, however, that unless you have the actual video hardware, even if you are sending the program the information that you do, you will get TOTALLY horrible performance if you can even run the game at all.

The utility for bad graphics emulated the hardware T & L that Intel video chips always lacked until the most recent and special of their devices, but it took them almost two years to support the new upgrade with drivers, and they still do not have any function to set aside dedicated RAM, the way that AMD's /ATI's chipsets can do.

The name of the utility is "3Danalyze", and it cannot emulate onboard video, which seems to be one of the things that DA:O's configuration demands.

P. S. In regard to the HD 3870, I have no idea that it is similarly affected, but many of the Geforce cards in the 8000, 9000, and 200 generations have trouble with game playing with about half of the drivers that nVIDIA releases the past two years, and therefore the very newest isn't always best.  You might try "rolling back" one or two driver versions the way that the Geforce people have to do.

It's the next thing I'll try after installing the 2007 version :-)=

Ok, all problems solved. changed compatibility from "Vista SP1" to "Windows XP SP3".. seems Vista fails on just so many levels, I'm thinking about reinstallling N.T. 4.0 :D

Too bad you had to go that far, but here's hoping you find that the effort was worth it!  Meanwhile, I also looked at the NT4 proposition, last summer, and it really wasn't at all practical.  I didn't want to go back to the Dark Ages, not me.

I just purchased the game last night and played until the part where I left my clan and went off the be a Grey Warden. Everything ran great until I was sent ot find Alistar, once I found him the game started crashing.

I loaded the patch - Crash
I updated all of my drivers - Crash
I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it - Crash

I updated the DirectX software and now I get the "can't find a supported graphics card" message.

Has anyone found a fix for this problem yet?

Kinda strange that even after reloading the game, it still won't find the correct video card.

My graphics card is a 512Mb Radeon 3870. I'm at version 11 of the Catalyst drivers, and still no luck.

Thansk!!

You ran a Direct3D install, and THAT  was when you initially got the "no supported video card" error message, right?  Obviously the Dx9 / Dx10 / Dx11 you used is why it happened at that point.  You need a different Dx setup copy, or a repair install for your Windows OS.

Three softwares must work together: driver + Dx9 + game.

I should have been clearer, the update to the DiretX is from the DA DVD. It loaded perfectly the first time that I loaded the game, then I started getting the black screen/lockup problem that many others are getting. When I uninstalled the reinstalled the game from the DVD the second time, it's like it didn't remove some files and didn't overwrite them either, it just left them as corrupt or bad.

Is it possible to remove DirectX from the system all together and reinstall it from scratch? I've done a lot to my systems over the years, but I don't think that I've ever done that.

I found a tool for it with a very quick search using Google.  If there's one such tool, there will be more:

integrated video DONT play Dragon Age. Stick to your desktop. Integrated video cards can play some older, less intensive games, but NOT new games like Dragon Age

Thanks for the link to remov ethe DirectX.

I don't have an integrated video card, I'm using a 3870 PCIe version. This card is incredible for everything else, just thins game giving me some headache. I did see another post about temperatures causing some issues, which had ran through my head this morning while updating my drivers. My system is really clean (as far as software) and the dust was just sprayed out a week or so ago by my air compressor. But, the fan on my graphics card never seems to run very fast except at the logout screen on WoW, so maybe turning the fan speed up might help. I'm gonna give it a try tonight when i get home from work.

Thanks for all the help!!

seems the same problem as mine.

corresponding link: http://help.dragonag...li=&p_topview=1

I don't know whether it's the "Run this Program as an Administrator" box or the changing of the compatibility to an older version of windows option that does the trick.. except if you're not running it on vista, in which case i couldn't help you either..

oh, and install the catalyst 9.1 or even an older version, it will cause many less problems. (You can find the old drivers on the official ATI driver download page, at the bottom of the driver page, there are the additional links, click on the "Previous Drivers and Software" link)

And what happened when you reinstalled the game itself, as per the many help suggestions already included in the many messages on the subject?  (1. Graphic Driver 2. DirectX APIs 3. The Game)

(P. S. added in edit 2-24-2011 -- occasionally, this error message is
triggered from mixing up screen ratio settings between wide screen and
standard 4:3 ratios.  Be sure you are starting out from a resolution
that matches your display's ratio.)

I don't see any mention here of the Omega drivers. I wonder if Suyz learned about those somewhere else and got the error message to stop making the mistake?
