What is the best class for a first time player?

I enjoy playing characters that fight fast, and in light armour. I'm fine with mages too.

And which builds do you suggest? Sorry, I'm new to BG...

19 dex
16 or more CON
INT is a dump point stast
WIS is a dump point stat
CHA 8 or more 18 gets some nice bonuses but 8 prevents the negitive reactions in BG1

Is there a site or wikia where I can find more guides and tips for BG?

The advantages over the elven fighter are superior HP and better saving throws, and if you take your first look into the game, you may come to realize how important saving throws are. With throwing axes you will also deal more damage ranged than a guy with a bow (though they don't have the same reach as archery).
Sorcerer may not be the best choice for a first-time player for the simple reason that if you make wrong choices during spell selection, you can't revert them. Besides that, casters are very frail if you don't know how to use their spells correctly.

(for OP: Dualclassing means abandoning your old class in favor of a new one. You start again at level 1, and need to gain as many levels as you had with the old class +1, before you have access to the abilities of both classes. You will still level up only in your new class though. If you like the idea of two classes, you should try a multiclass instead, which is chosen at character generation)
@ZombieChow Interesting. I didn't notice that. How did you get this piece of information?

Imoen is a good aid (more shooting) for your archer and make sure to have at least one warrior in your group. And use pause. A lot.

With Tutu or BGT Archers (ranger kit) are indeed the best ranged warriors.Sandbox47 wrote...
For a first time in BG1 take an elven ranger. They'll be good with bows
But in vanilla BG1 fighters will advance in levels a bit faster and be able to put more points into a single weapon, meaning they will be more successful with bows than rangers.
What advantages does a pure low level ranger have over an equally pure and low level fighter, anyway?

You will have a full group and whatever you yourself play, other NPCs will fill the missing tasks.
BG comes with a very complex rule system, and the first levels are very hard, no matter what your class choice is.
In BG2 you already have some level from the start, though, so its actually easier, at least if you know what you're doing.
If you absolutely want a powergamer option, that would be Fighter/Mage. Available to Elf, Halfelf, and Gnome.
In BG1, go for ranged weapons, i.e. Composite Longbows. They rock.

And remember - ugly races can't romance in BG2.
(of course you can mod/hack it)

Actually, a Half-Orc can do the Viconia romance. And, as you say, if you load the Nalia romance mod, a good aligned dwarf can romance her. And I would say that half-orc or dwarf are the two best choices for a pure fighter for someone's first run through SoA. It's also worth saying that picking a balanced party of 5 NPCs to assist you is a big help: another fighter, 2 mages/thief types, a cleric and a druid. For some side quests you should temporarily leave one of your "regulars" at your home base (usually the Copper Coronet Inn) and add the side quest NPC, but it helps to develope the same 5 NPCs so that they gain in power as you go thru Amn.

from G3 Fixpack Core Fixes
Viconia Won't Romance Half-Orc Characters
A half-orc PC should be able to initiate the Viconia romance, but a bad trigger in the main game script was preventing this.

Note: Rated 14A for coarse language.
I played my first BG1 game with a pure mage. h_taifun's advice seems pretty solid: play with what interests you. Just run away 'til you can find some fellow adventurers.
