Without any mods (like the G3 Fixpack), half-Orcs cannot romance anybody.

from G3 Fixpack Core Fixes
Viconia Won't Romance Half-Orc Characters

A half-orc PC should be able to initiate the Viconia romance, but a bad trigger in the main game script was preventing this.

Yes, but even the first time you play you should install the current fixpacks; I don't think of them as mods, but rather as life preservers. I have done the Vicky/Half-Orc thing and there didn't didn't seem to be any gliches.

Except for a bit of stuttering perhaps? :P

Note that for a first-time playthrough in vanilla BG1, you can't play with a 'kit', which is a kind of subset for the class. In this topic, the mentioned Berserker is a kit of the Fighter class, the Cavalier a kit of Paladin class, the Archer a kit of Ranger class. These are all part of BG 2 and can be played in BG1 only if it's played using Tutu or BGT: both make BG 1 run using the BG 2 engine. There's a lot of the cons and pros of BG 1 vanilla, or Tutu or BGT(rilogy) to be found elsewhere.

Which ever class you play, I'd advice to start with BG 1. You are less powerful, but you get the chance to not only learn the game and it's magic system bit by bit, but you get to know your own character's background bit by bit, instead of it all being spoiled and fed to you at the start of BG 2.

And yes, there is so much support from the NPC's you pick up, that you can play the game with any class as a first timer. You should just be aware that mages are very vulnerable in the beginning, especially if they're not specialist (a specialist mage starts with 2 memorizable spells, I'd suggest sleep and armour if you go the mage way). Easiest would be any of the warrior classes.

Berserker!

Note: Rated 14A for coarse language.

Funny... when I first saw AnonymousHero's chant I thought of a different comic scene when the Bard (of The Bard's Tale) first meets the undead beserker Hrafn in the ice tombs. He has to goad him into fighting so he mocks berserkers. In this clip it starts about at 4min into it. "Beserker? Don't make me laugh!"

As to the OP, I agree with several others that you should take whatever you're most interested in- and thus can most identify with as you go- and leave open the option of recruiting people for a party. My first char was a fighter-mage-thief (because I couldn't decide) which ended up being good because it allowed me to experiment with three classes on my first run through and get a sense of the skills and requirements of each. If you want the safest bet, stick with base fighters of one sort or another. Whenever I've tried a new game (or NWN server), I've used them first.

Since BG1 is a low level game, the most powerfull spells you will get as a mage will be web and fireball. I recommend a fighter, but if you want to roll a caster, pick up a specialist, it is worth it. If you play tutu and plan to import your character to BG2, just play whatever you like more and consider things like multi-class and dual-classes as they are really enjoyable in these games.

Definitely play BG1 rather than start with BG2. Playing through the whole series with one character, ending in ToB...wow. Great feeling. Especially the first time through.
