I recently installed Baldur's Gate I (version 1.1.4315) on my Windows 7 computer. It's been working fine, until... after a big fight with Gnolls in the Gnoll Stronghold, half of my party for some reason can't go back the way they came to leave the area (they just walk in place for a while and then stop). I've been Googling this problem for hours, and the only solution I could find was to edit the Baldur.ini file (adding "Cheat=1" under [Game Options]) and then use Ctrl-Tab to open a "Cheat Console" to enter "Hans()" to move characters to an adjacent open area. I made the stated change to the .ini file, but nothing happens when I enter Ctrl-Tab in-game. Is there some other way to get the Cheat Console to work, or some other way to move my characters? I'd hate to have to back up to my last saved game, 'cause it was a lot of work killing all those Gnolls!
Thanks in advance!

It should be 'Cheats=1' apparently, so if your OP is correct then then you're missing an s when you edited the .ini file. Just to check, the affected characters aren't carrying too much are they? If their items are too heavy then they will just walk in place as you described.

Or you can use "Debug Mode=1", which will do the same thing. Once it's activated, you can teleport your party to where your mouse cursor is by pressing Ctrl+J.
As miss_daydream said, the most common reason for characters walking in place is that they're over-encumbered. Check your info window (where the combat messages etc are displayed) if it says anything, or take a look at the inventory of the affected characters and compare the current load and maximum capacity. It is possible that their strength has been drained or a script added some items, so their encumbrance may have changed without you noticing.

I double-checked, and I did put "Cheats=1" (with an S), I just mistyped it here. I did check the encumbrance, and that wasn't the problem--they can move around in the little area where they're trapped, but when I try to get them past this one bottleneck, they get stuck. I will try "Debug Mode=1" though! Thanks!

I added Debug Mode=1 to the .ini file (I presume it's supposed to go under "[Game Options]" but when I pressed Ctrl+J, it just brings up the Journal screen.
I'm heading out of town for a long weekend, so if I don't reply back to additional posts until Monday, that's why! Thanks!

The Ctrl+J is from BG2, I just thought it might work in BG1 as well. Guess it doesn't, sorry.
Have you tried selecting just one character and walking him step by step out of the place where he's stuck? It sounds like they can still walk, but are stuck within a certain region, is that correct? The gnoll stronghold has lots of narrow places like staircases (like the hole where Dynaheir is kept), maybe it's just an issue with pathfinding.

Yep, tried that too. I also tried moving to a spot "off screen" and clicking a travel-to spot to try get the stuck characters to auto-walk to it, also with no luck. I really think that I need to figure out how to get the Cheat Console to work to free them...

Are you playing vanilla BG1 or do you have mods installed?
Strange behavior of characters walking a bit and then stopping can also occur if one or more NPC's are trying to talk to your main character (or each other), but he or she is out of range. Did you find Dynaheir and talked to her? Maybe there's a dialogue waiting to pop up, which can only occur if your character is close enough. If your PC is too far away but the game tries starting the dialogue anyway - that's also a possible cause of this behavior.
hint: if you can't find Dynaheir, look very close in the spot where you defeated the most of the gnolls. Don't look at a glance, look thorough at places where prisoners might be kept...

CTRL+J works in BG1, but unlike BG2 you need to EnableCheatKeys() before you can use it.

First the good news--after being out of town for several days, when I reloaded my save game, a bunch of gnolls respawned in the same area as one of the "stuck" characters. The rest of the party ran to the rescue, and after killing all the gnolls, suddenly the "stuck" characters can move freely again. I've gotten them out of the stronghold and can continue playing, finally. Go figure.
To answer Son of Imoen's questions, this all happened after I had found Dynaheir and added her to the party. It's apparently "vanilla" BG1, as this was the first I ever heard of their being any mods!
I'd be interested to hear more about them--is there a specific topic on the forum I should look at?
Irrbloss: I presume that "EnableCheatKeys()" is something I do in the Cheat Console, and I still can't get that to come up. *sigh*
So, immediate problem solved, but still confused as to why I can't get the cheats to work (I could use some extra GP).
Thanks everyone!

I didn't find a good comprehensive topic about advisable mods on this forum, but there is one on the GOG (Grand Old Games) Baldur's Gate-forum: http://www.gog.com/e...ive_modders_guiGeekBoy3 wrote...

*edit: and this one www.gog.com/en/forum/baldur_s_gate/5_must_have_mods/ (last post by 'Dub Conqueror' - that's also an alias of me).
The most common sources for downloading mods are Gibberlings3 (www.gibberlings3.net/), Spellhold Studios (www.spellholdstudios.net/ie/ - the ie stands for the Infinity Engine Baldur's Gate uses) and Sorceror's Place (www.sorcerers.net/Games/index.php)

To enable the cheat console, press the key directly under the esc key and to the left of the cipher 1 key. On Danish keyboards, it is ½/§ key. On US keyboards, it is the tilde key.
Also, if press X ( I think it is X?), the code for the area, you're in will show. If you get a good walkthrough, like Dan Simpson's, it will have the area codes for the different areas. You can move your characters to another area by, in the cheat console, writing: Move to AR 6200, for instance.
You might want to search via google or chrome for detailed ways to this. I've done it in once, in BG2, because I couldn't get to the final area. It's been a long time, so I can't remember exactly what I did.
The cheat console is also known as the developer console, beacuse it is used by the developers to quickly move to an area that needs to be tested or by QA (quality assurance) to test and retest an area for bugs and glitches.

Well, I tried Ctrl ~, Alt ~, Tab ~, Ctrl Alt ~, Ctrl Tab ~, Alt Tab ~, Ctrl Alt Tab ~, and still no sign of the Cheat Console.
I took a quick glance at the links, but I'm a rank amateur at modification, so I'm happy just to play the game as is!

I believe Windows 7 will copy the baldur.ini file to a compatibility area if you install to the default directory (Vista does). If the location of your file has a "compatibility files" icon click on that instead and edit the file in that location instead. Sample here;

If you edit the file in your game directory it is ignored and the compatibility version used unless you run the game as administrator.
For 1.1.4315 you are correct to be adding "Cheats=1" in [Game Options] then holding Ctrl and pressing Tab. If it works, you will need to do as Irrbloss says and type CLUAConsole:EnableCheatKeys() to use the hotkeys such as Ctrl/J.

Your save games will be in a similar location, useful to know if you intend continuing to BG2.
If you ever re-install I would recommend using c:\\games or similar as it avoids this type of issue.
