How do you think ME3 will start?

Okay yes I realize it's a bit futile to try and predict what will happen in ME3. Afterall I doubt many could have predicted Shepard having a partnership with Cerberus after ME1, so who knows? That said though I don't think Bioware is going to pull another "Cerberus" on us again. I'm guessing ME3 is going to be a lot more straightforward, at least to begin with. As such I think there's pretty good indication as to how ME3 will likely start. I've thought about this a lot (helps pass the time til ME3) so I think I have a pretty good prediction of what's going to go down. Obviously feel free to comment and critique.

(Also I realize I made a similair thread purporting that Shepard would rejoin the Alliance in ME3. I have come to dismiss this claim. So yes for some you'll have to bare with my speculations yet again.)

ME2 Ending Analysis

Assuming you successfully beat the game without Shepard dying there are essentially two endings for the game. You have Paragon and Renegade and in both endings it seems more or less that Shepard will be acting on their own, independent of Cerberus. Which leads me to believe if you won't be officially tied with Cerberus in ME3 anymore. But this raises a question: who will Shepard be working with? Obviously Shepard will still need some kind of support if they want to take on the Reaper threat.

True with Liara being the Shadow Broker she'll undoubtely be supplying you information through-out ME3.  However you're going to need more then just information if you want to get anything done. Even though Shepard has their own ship they'll still need help by means of supplies and people. While it is possible Liara could support Shepard this way I still think there's a need for a larger known organization to help you hook up with the right people and resources. But I'll get more into that in just a bit.

ME3 is a standalone game

Whether you like it or not ME3 has to be playable regardless of whether you've played either of the previous two games. This means that someone who has never played ME2 has still be able to jump in with a brand new game. As such there needs to be a scenario prompting some form of character creation.I'm guessing it will not be a Lazarus 2.0 as that would be getting a tad silly. But I certainly think you'll have to re-enter Shepard's personal information into some sort of database, similar to ME1.

While this could just be the Shadow Broker database, that seems rather redundant since Liara should know everything about you already. So who else could it be? I think it's unlikely Shepard will rejoin the Alliance simply because they've shown themselves to be very incompetent with handling the Collectors. Also there seems to be a lot of indication that the Alliance doesn't want Shepard back for siding with Cerberus.

This leaves one good option: Rejoin the Council and become a real Spectre again. Even if in ME2 you got your Spectre status back it was really just in name only. Also for those who didn't pick Anderson becoming a Spectre again isn't even an option. So realistically despite the fluff for a Paragon Shepard, no one is actually a true Spectre at the end of ME2.

Now I can see some out there not liking this. Afterall pretty much every form of the Council has shown itself to be morons, except for Anderson's interference. However the same could also be said of Cerberus I think.

So why become a Spectre again?

Simply put you'll need to. I can't imagine ME3 is going to just take place in the Terminus systems. This means Shepard can't simply be a rogue again since some of Shepard's actions are bound to upset certain authorities. Without true Spectre status Shepard would be very liable to get in some sort of  trouble with C-Sec or other authorities. Only by being a Spectre can Shepard operate outside Galactic Law and do what needs to get done.

Whether or not you like the Council you will need their help. If anything you'll need to help rally them against the Reapers since without the aid of the Alliance, Turians, Asari, and Salarians you won't have much of a chance holding them off.

Besides having Council support, there is another good reason to be a Spectre again. Spectres are the best of the best in the galaxy. We know this as Shepard was/is one, Saren who almost on his own brought back the Reapers, Tela Vasir who proved to be a tough advesary in LotSB, and Nihlus who fought Samara and managed to get away. If Shepard truly hopes to take on the Reaper's they'll need the help of other Spectres.

Team Spectre

At this point I think you can see where I'm going with this. The reality is Bioware isn't going to bring back the ME2 crew for ME3 as squadmates. Cameos probably. It'd be a variable/balance nightmare to have the survivors as your squadmates. Also some players don't have a proper crew for the Normandy (killed by Collectors) which is just another reason why you'd need to start fresh.

But why else lead a team of Spectres? Well other then the fact they'll all be very good combatants, it'll be a way to meet some interesting new characters. It also means you likely won't have to spend as much time building a team since every Spectre will likely be ready to go and dedicated to helping you stop the Reapers. Which means you won't have to worry about Loyalty and or resovlving their family issues. Also being a Spectre gives you access to the very best in weapons and armor there is in the Galaxy, which are again things you'll need.

The Beginning of the End

So how does all this happen and come about? Well for this matter I can't be real sure. But if I had to guess one of two options seems likely. The first is the Reapers will make a surprise attack on the SR2 causing it massive damage and forcing the Normandy to retreat. The crew may end up getting killed or having to abandon ship yet again.

The other possibility is T.I.M. may no longer be happy to let you free-ride in his ship anymore and attempts to take it back. This might be more plausible as T.I.M. is likely willing to kill off the crew and or take prisoners. This could be what seperates you from your previous surviving team-mates. This could also be what prompts Shepard to seek out Anderson/The Council for aid . And this could very well result in the SR2 being lost and Shepard  procuring an SR3 from the Alliance/Council to mount a rescue.

Like I said here I can only guess as to what will happen, but something will happen that will force Shepard to start from a blank slate once again. And as for the rest of ME3 I can't even begin to fathom what will happen.
