Greetings dear Dragonagers;

I'm Estyss Eon and I'm wondering what you do with your money~

Aheheh, I wouldn't ask you this in real life... but this is Dragon age.

Do you save up for the super radical awesome pimped up items that merchants occasionally have, or do you spend it on gradual upgrades?

I get around... 100 soverigns, give or take by the near end of the game, if I save up. This usually buys me 1 really good item.

Money hungry merchants chargin me more than the crap's worth. *grumblemumble*

This is slightly off topic, but I think we should have the option of intimidating merchants. >;|

It depends on priorities, but as gold is readily available in the latter part of the game, I choose to spend as I go.

I think you missed some of the side quests Estyss Eon but I agree with with Elhanan... Spend it!

If you saved up 'till near end game you should have way more than 100 gold. You should have several, or at least a few hundred. That is of course if you loot enemies and chests as you go and sell all of the items you don't use.

Me, I only purchase epic weapons and armor. But I also purchase small, useful items like lessor injury kits.

I did a tycoon playthrough as a dwarf noble, naturally, and bought everything my stony little heart desired. The stick of sovereign summoning you get in the Golems DLC helps with this.

To answer your question, typically I only spend cash on my PC character. For a mage you can buy a neat stick or a pretty gown. For a rogue you can buy a neat dagger or a nice piece of light leather armour. And for a warrior you can buy a nice piece of heavy armour. If you have a two hander, you can buy a good maul. For all characters there's a nice belt for sale.

I have all the DLC's installed and completed. My warden character gets at the start of the game, a good bow, decent tier 6 armour, a pretty gown, a good two hander, a good one hander, a dagger and various accessories. I also start with an item worth 300+ sovereigns.

I spend as I go.

LOL.

I never spend money on generic stuff as similar quality gear will start showing up in loot about the same time it's available from a merchant.  I always avail myself of  the Bodhan-restocks-after-1st-camp exploit.  At a minimum I buy a tome.  If I've sold the stick then I treat myself to 2 spellwards if playing a party but even then I save my loot for tomes, legendary items and getting Mikhail to upgrade the best stuff to tier 7.

Ok, question on that bit: I have all the DLC but have not completed it all. Am I to understand then that if I go through the DLC with my character I used on my first playthrough, the items garnered from the DLC will then start with any characters on subsequent playthroughs?

If that's the case, I might ditch my latest playthrough start. I finished the game on my first playthrough, but didn't do the DLC before starting another.

Yes; items gained in Witch Hunt, Golems, and Lil's Song will be given to any DAO character; even those saved games you may have currently. And upgraded versions will be granted to those in DAA; perhaps other advanced lvl mods, too.

Ahh, good then, won't have to restart my save. Thanks for the info! This forum really needs some sort of "thanks" mechanic, most everyone here is very helpful.

Note however that those items are tied to the DLCs achievements, you need to gain those specific achievements for the items to spawn in your origins/awakening inventory.

I see...

With everyone's mention of the DLC, I just find no need for it; I find the original game interesting enough for now. I'm always finding out new things.

... Or maybe I just can't afford it xD

However I'm curious to know what these expensive side quests are.. *strokes beard in contemplation*

To answer the original question: in the very early stages I pretty much sell everything that isn't absolutely essential for me or Alistair and buy loads of poultices. I find you'll end up with a bit of lyrium, poison stuff and a few trap triggers and some mage items to keep Morrigan stocked and then Liliana so it isn't necessary to buy them stuff really.

It also depends on what class and type you are, for instance as a dual weapon user I might buy a nice second dagger to go with the cool one you get in the wilds.

After that you start to come by money a little easier.

Essentially I spend as I go concentrating on health early and then moving to speciality weapons and runic items for weapon upgrades.

I tend not to buy armour unless it's uber amazing (in any game really) as you will generally find plenty and as you go one will pick up better and betters stuff through certain quests.

Basically, if you find yourself at the end of the game with loads of cash it's pointless as like real life you can't take it with you. I always blow the treasury on helpful items for the final battles because you can never be too well stocked in a big boss fight.

I usually have a couple of items in mind before I even start the playthrough, and usually have most of the important items bought in the lvl 10-15 range.

If you end up with only about 100 sovereigns at end game without having purchased most if not all of the elite items you probably aren't pinching your pennies hard enough. I find the little things add up

-get backpacks early so you can load up on junk to sell.

-I'm not big on crafting, poultices and things like that, I find selling all of them to buy better gear more beneficial.

-Little things like stripping down temporary companions right before they are about to leave party to sell there gear is a big help early on. (Allows you to buy both backpacks from Ostagar vendor.)

Oh yes, stripping companions temp or no is always a good idea. I'm sell happy, once a companion or I can handle better armour and weapons (if they need it, not so much for ranged characters and also not char specific items) then I sell off all the old stuff as soon as I can.

Your only purchases early on should be backpacks, cheap gifts, tomes of skill, ability and arcane. Everything else is sold.

edit: I will fork up cash for paralisys runes

2nd edit:  And the first purchase, quest, thing, period, after leaving Lothering and camp (buy the 2 tomes and backpack)  is Denerium > Wonders> Archivists Sash

The wilds companions get auto stripped and it will be in your bags after the joining anyway.  The 2 in the tower will not auto dump to your bags, strip them prior to lighting the beacon.

Early on I spend money on talent/skill books, crafting recipes and ingredients. Theres not usually any to spare for extra gear until about 12th+ level and by that time I've usually got pretty good gear. Its around here that Morrigan will gain the skill to be a cash machine but I try, with variable success, not to abuse this.

My last run through I only bought cheap gifts, a few recipes, skill books and back packs. I had 400 gold at the end from doing only high target-late game pickpocketing with the bard. Didn't even do the Crime wave quests. No crafting cash at all.

In the early part of the game, I usually spend as I go to get better equipment. As I progress though, I end up saving most of it. I've had over 500 soverigns before the The Landsmeet though, so you should have loads more than 100.

The deciding factor is does the companion leave you or die I think.
Ser Jory and Davyth die in the Joining, you automatically get their gear.
Your temporary companions at the Tower of Ishal, mum in the HN origin, Leske in the DC origin, Jowan and Lily in the Mage origin, Soris in the CE origin all survive, at least beyond the point where you part from them. Want their gear you have to strip them down. Same would apply to Gorim in the DN origin but since its all going to be confiscated from you it doesn't really matter.
