Strange! I really felt Leliana's Song was the best DLC for Origins. Maybe because I was allowed to play a new character; it felt fresh, and made me sympathise more with the character and feel close to her.

Am I the only one who thinks that voice over helped a lot to symphatize with Leliana in the DLC?

Lelina's Song wasn't that bad, though they shouldn't have tried to re-tell her story, by changing up what happened. It should have taken place in Orlais, not Denerim, not changed how she came across the letters, etc. Also, not having the warden involved limits replayability, as there's really no reason to play it a second time, if all achievements were earned.

Yea, one of the reasons I didn't get it was because of the Retcon.

Anyway. I'd expect them to capitalize on the framed narrative to do some weird things with it. If the basic game is The Usual suspects, I want the expansions to turn it into Rashomon.

Leliana's Song was actually one of my favorites.

Nope. And I'm really looking forward to that in DA2.

I thought Leliana's Song, the golem DLC and Darkspawn Chronicles were all weak sauce. They didn't matter. It was just something to do to pass the time. Witch Hunt was better because it actually advanced the story and possibly your character.

And my hope is that "we're not gonna make another one like that"
means they will not reuse oc areas again for dlc - aka no more
akward map recycling within dlc wich was supposed to be set
in another region of Thedas, to begin with.
A qa glitch he may have remebered was the naming of a female
city elven prisoner inside a dungeon - caused a lot of jokes on Leli
and the devs cost within fanfiction and fancomics...

I thought it emphasized her deceptiveness, which was one of the things I found creepy about her, so have to say no.

I don't see what's so hard to understand. He thought it was good, but it could have been better.

Thinking it could've been better is fine. Already deciding "with confidence" that this untested gut feel couldn't possibly be wrong and discarding possibilty of making more of what was favourably received? That's another thing entirely.

I wasn't particularly pleased with any of the DLC. Awakening has some issues which could have been fixed but it was okay to play (such as if Alistair stays as a GW, they don't even mention him but instead say that your PC is the only living GW assigned to Fereldon - what the heck happened to Alistair, big mistake IMO). I hope the devs do much better with the DA2 DLC.

The voiceover was alright but the main reason I found it compelling was that it took advantage of Bioware's storytelling ability better than anything else in Dragon Age.  The progression through the story, the atmosphere in the dungeon (music was awesome btw), the conflicted emotions afterward...awesome.

Darkspawn Chronicles was pretty much kill everything you can.  Golems of Amgarrak was supposed to make you feel for Jerrick I guess but it was an incredibly lame boss rush that hated rogues because rogues were limited to critical hits and all the freakin golems had crit immunity .  Witch Hunt was...meh.  Origins and Awakening had the same problem.  After the prologue they just gave you a list of stuff to do to get to the endgame which ended up making what should have been a great experience feel rather tedious at times because they just feel like a bunch of sidequests you have to complete to get back to the main story.  Instead of using the writing to weave a great story like Leliana's song (which considering you knew exactly what was going to happen and it was still great...kudos to you) they made everything character driven and while the characters were great, when they don't say anything while your plodding through the deep roads...it gets rather boring to say the least.

I liked Lelianas Song very much. As for the re-telling of her story, don't take everything she says in the main game for the truth. The events in Lelianas song are viewed and seen from a different perspective.

In his response to the question about whether or not there's a seperate DLC team this time around, Laidlaw said

"For Dragon Age II, we don’t want to tackle larger packs this time around. We want to do some stuff that’s a little more specific to Hawke, and that really includes your character."

I'm aware that's out of context a bit, but i'm wondering if he meant they don't want to tackle larger expansion packs? focusing on smaller DLC like GOA-, witch hunt, etc -length stuff as opposed to awakening-lenghth?

The dlc was a weak spot in Origins anyway you look at it. It all got pretty dismal reviews across the board. For me it was trying to do too many little things. Too many cheep little vignettes. They could have run 3 successive DLC's based on wardens keep. They could have done 3 more based on morrigan's ritual. Or each one of those could have been an expansion instead of that Awakenings thing. We could have had so much more adventure with Sten too.

I suspect that the quick abandonment of DAO in favor of DA2 was due in part to the complexity of story and depth of the game. I think I heard mention that the game was a nightmare to work with due to that and perhaps this was reflected in the poorly received DLC. I can forgive that. But I am cautiously avoiding any lure of expanded content from BW at this point. They did not live up to my expectations in this area last time around.

The idea of some character backstories as DLC is good.

They should have did one about Alistair and Duncan. There was a whole six months or more between Al's recruitment and The Warden's. A lot could have happened. And Alistair sounded like he had a lot of fun with the other Wardens.

I liked Leliana's Song a lot - it was one of the only standalone DLCs that felt strongly story-driven and I liked that.  That is not to disparage the other DLCs.

I
like how he admits that Leliana's Song was the weakest DLC, which I
think he's spot on with that. He doesn't state whether they're gonna
make another Awakening style DLC, but I have my fingers crossed.

Leliana's Song was actually one of the BEST DLCs released. Far better than Darkspawn Chronicles and Witch Hunt and much better than the story/quest of Golems (Golems was saved by its pretty intuitive gameplay interface with the "dimension" switching).
It had intersting quests, a good amount of combat, hinted at how dialogue in DA2 is going to be handled and had decent a characterization despite its short length. And, of course, Leliana is awesome.

I like how he acknowledges in the interview that a decent amount of fans prefer the silent protagonist ^_^

For me the best DLC was Shale, but other than that, yes, Leliana's Song was my favorite.  Still, I have to agree w/ what Mike said.  It would have been much better w/ Leliana and my Warden, though that would have alienated a lot of other players.

I do hope any DA2 DLC will match up to the quality of the ME2 DLC.

The idea of some character backstories as DLC is good.

It wasn't backstory.  It was "listen to Leliana for an hour or two and fight some bad guys."  Granted, the listen to Leliana part was a trial for me so I wasn't going to enjoy it much, but I don't see how it added to the character when you already heard her story once and it's just a different version.  It detracts as far as I can see, because it just retcons the backstory from Origins.

Interesting. I liked Lelianas song, but I have to say the best part of it was that beating it offered bonuses for the actual game, with the battledress.

I loved all the dlc, but honestly, I prefer ones that are part of the main game over the new campaign ones by far. Return to Ostagar and Wardens keep are definately my favorites, closely followed by Shales dlc.

I *liked* that the DLC was a totally separate story from DAO. I'm the kind of person that wants to read all minor character's stories and the villain's story too though, so I guess I'm just insane.

I thought LS was really well done and a nice change of pace from the Grey Warden storyline. It's too bad if we aren't going to see any DA2 gameplay, DLC or otherwise, that doesn't directly involve Hawke.

Uhm, excuse me good sirs, but calling Leliana's Song the worst DLC is just wrong...first of all, it finally was a story-focused DLC opposed to the, by far, worst DLC DSC which was nothing but a sheer combat DLC that lacked any new experience and did not matter for anything at all. In LS, you got some interesting background info, interesting quests and a lot of dialog...hmmm.

Leliana's Song was the only good thing to come out of a bunch of DLC ranging from bad to mediocre, not including Shale. Even Awakenings was too frustrating (Frustrating for non-difficulty reasons) for me to peg it more than average.

As far as voicing Leliana in the DLC making it better, she was already an established character and since we weren't really making any significant choices in it, it worked. It's less effective when using it to determine the personality and behavior of a new character, but that's another discussion entirely.
