DG: How do you address age, then? Characters getting older, etc.

ML: You set a character the right age so that our players don’t have to end up all wrinkly.

Right. They pick an age where you can go ten years without having any noticeable amount of aging.

I agree. I could be wrong (shocking!), but my interpretation of the quote was that an age range was selected for the characters where the need to implement aging was unnecessary (or at least avoidable).

It's a ten year span and I think it's a great implementation... starting around  the middle of 20ish; that way, our characters will not grow too gray at the end of that time span.

That sounds like about a dozen different kinds of awesome:O

Don't see any reason that you can't use that concept in future works.  And I would totally buy it.

Maybe it is just me but wouldn't more people be disturbed by characters aging than not aging?

I prefer dlc that adds to the main game. I do not like seperate mini-adventures.
Or better yet...expansions.

Thanks for the linky.

OMG, Maria13, you hit the nail on the head!

Perhaps you should start a new thread devoted to this topic, but I have noticed the noticeable inbalance between DA2 marketing promo info as well. I don't care for male Hawke because I don't play male characters so why the longest wait for more decent info about female Hawke (her voice, her potential LIs etc). It's pissy having to wait this long now. :pinched:

Perhaps the game dollar$ come in through people who mainly play male characters (I guess this data is collected via that data sending option in the game options), but still, it sucks having to wait Bioware.....

Back to the topic though, I haven't bought any DLC for Origins yet, but was just about to purchase the Ultimate edition to see what it's all about, but meh, all these harsh reviews are truly off-putting.

Not to pile on or divert the topic, but I was still indecisive about DA2 up until seeing shots of Mage Marian who looked great and wasn't wearing sl*t attire, and some of the other info coming out in the latest dev diary.  By that time it was too late to get the SE.  If I had seen more of Marian early, I wouldn't have hesitated and would probably have ponied up for the PC price increase, too.  It's a disservice to hide the female PC.

And yeah, I did notice that only the female LIs were featured in DLC.  Alistair's Awakening cameo was nice, but not quite the same.

Well, it's been mentioned before in this topic, but Leliana's song was not the weakest DLC. The weakest DLC that almost ruined DA for me was Witch Hunt, incredibly poor DLC, and second weakest was probably Darkspawn chronicles.

I think its safe to say that darkspawn chronicles was the weakest of them all. For me Leliana's Song was the most fun of all of them. I think most of them were at least pretty good, but I agree with keeping the team together for the DLC, as theres definitely room for improvement (particularly in regard to the Expansion, which again was OK and all, I especially loved the part where you got to rule over the castle and make important decisions, but clearly overall there was a lot of room for improvement). So I'd say its very good news that they seem to be learning from their mistakes, and moving in the right direction. Keep up the great work!

Yes, they have you start in your middle 20s. That way there's no need for a visual change as you get old.

You don't go gray. You don't get wrinkles. You don't age.

I would still buy it (I did...), because its a lot of content (not everything matching the Orignis quality, but still) at a very lower price...

Regarding  the marketing strategies, it has been discussed in this forum before, many times, the last I remember when DA2 was announced. It boils down to demographics... Female players have a great voice here in the forums, but dont count much in the overall sales... Its the same reason they are marketing DA2 mainly as a "sexier, bloodier, grittier" game, all directed to young console players... Such are at this moment the facts of life. Until female players turn to represent a "bigger slize" of the "cake", they wont be acnoknowledged in the marketing campaigns in that level of detail.

I think his cameo is only as king, otherwise you get Anora.

In 2010 female gamers were 40% of the pie, and 46% of the household game purchasers. That's close enough for something...anything? Maybe yes?

Well those young console players are getting the money somewhere.  I pre-ordered 2 copies of the game.  One for me and one for my 15 yr old son.  I think Bioware needs to do another census on who's playing their games.  I don't remember stating that I'm a female when I registered my Bioware games so where are they getting the information?

Nah, Fiery, if we want anything we have to start throwing ourselves under racehorses or burning postboxes because otherwise it's always "men are most of the demographic..."

Which is what I find displeasing about DAA.  The expansion is good, not great, but good, but having no mention of Alistair who stayed with the GWs is just bad writing.

@Ninotchka, I meant to say, don't be too discouraged by the reviews. If a DLC looks intriguing to you, buy it and you'll probably enjoy it just by virtue of it being DA. But I don't consider any of them a must-have, either.

Let's not give up hope yet.  We know they are many, many females who play Bioware's games.  Lead Designer Mike Laidlaw stated that they are more goodies in store yet to be revealed.  So far, we have seen the new "screenies for Lady Hawke (Marian Hawke).

So, we can only hope. :)

Perhaps you are forgetting that the vast majority of that 40 % play casual games like tetris or some "family friendly" game, not RPGs or any type of story-driven game... Those are the facts.

You dont need to argue with me,  I'm totally on your side, Id love to see a Bioware campaign addressing women. But Im not the one calling the shots... Posted Image

And?

I started my Mom on playing TSN. Mostly card/board games with some other arcade and rpg-lite titles. She turned into a MMO fanantic and could trounce any AC player. People can surprise you.

Not to derail the topic too badly...ahem

I Loved Shale, and enjoyed Rto and WK mainly I think because they were great-good and in the main game as an addition.

Bioware should buck that trend and try to make the game, heck the whole bloody/gritty/sexy RPG genre more appealing to females. For instance, the Sims (1,2 &3) is seemingly, totally dominated by female players. Maybe if Bioware added the possibility of decorating/designing Hawke's abode, clothing and possibly allow him/her to procreate, then the number of female players would go through the roof :P

Joking aside, Bioware marketing don't seem to have much integrity in this particular case. They are, as Maria13 said, perpetuating this trend of promoting to male gamers as a priority and thus continuing male gamer dollars dominating the sales. Maybe if marketing emphasised those qualities of this game that appeal to the general female gamer populace, for instance: the fantasy, adventure, companionship (platonic or romantic) aspects then they might experience an increase in sales amongst female gamers, that is if they want to see more females playing their games. Otherwise it's all about the MOOLAH.

But yeah, end of ranty, tanty :) apologies for bringing this topic up again, just had to vent.

The bolded* part was what Maria Caliban wrote (quoted) before the last one she posted.

The point * here is not about aging. It is about how DLCs will be handled later on (original team working on future DLCs), how the party sytem will benefit from each companion's strength, how our actions will carry over from game to game, how it is important to have players involved in future DLCs and how about keeping what works in DAO (great storytelling, the combat and our interactions with our companions.) That's the material point here.

Edit:*
