/Film:

The speculation can end about one of the two big female roles in Christopher Nolan‘s third Batman film. Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle, whose alter ego is Catwoman, in The Dark Knight Rises.

Additionally, we know the villain role Tom Hardy will play: Bane.

So, yeah, this is weird. I know a few people had called Tom Hardy as Bane, but I never would have expected that to actually be where The Dark Knight Rises was heading. The character was created in the early ’90s for the ‘Knightfall’ storyline, in which Bane famously broke Batman’s back. He looks like a luchador, but is highly intelligent and a master of many disciplines. He’s also not as crazy as many of the classic Batman villains, and has switched sides to work with Batman on more than one occasion.

How does this fit into The Dark Knight Rises? And where does Catwoman figure into things? Frankly, I don’t know.

So, questions: Is Selina Kyle really the love interest, and if so, will we even see the Catwoman alter ego? If that’s the case, then Talia al Ghul could be the other female character, which would make sense, because her father R’as al Ghul had some association with Bane in the comics. Stay tuned for developments on that front, but at the very least, don’t be surprised if there’s no real ‘Catwoman’ in the film after all.

BURBANK, CA, January 19, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.  Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”  Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.

The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Anne Hathaway seems like an odd choice. Dont really know anything about Tom Hardy, so can't comment on that

I would put Anne Hathaway in almost anything, if by almost anything you mean my bed.

I think she'll be a fine Batman. Or Catwoman.

I can't really picture Anne Hathaway as Catwoman it seems a strange choice.

She would fit better as Zatanna.

Not really sure what to make of the actress tbh. Beeing a Batman fan, all I read in the article was: Catwoman, Bane and a realease of summer 2010. Can't wait :)

Hoping she'll surprise us.

I do agree with both virumor and oraku4ever. She has that enthusiasm that would match those characters better.
We'll see if she can pull off a sultry thief without going overboard and just looking cheesy.

Can't say much about Tom Hardy, I've only seen him once.
Not to mention I know very little about Bane.

*edit, grammar*

If they do Bane correctly, as he originally was introduced and not into teh campy brute he's become in the comics, it will be fantastic.

And I trust in Nolan's casting, between Bale, Oldman, Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy and of course Heath Ledger he really hasnt made a mistake yet.

I've never seen her act. Can she act? She certainly has the big eyes for it, :P but she damn well better not be a freakin waif for the role. Catwoman must be athletic looking, not a skinny super model look. Not sure what to think of the Bane pick. Isn't Bane like, huge? Is tom Hardy bigger than Bale?

I have faith in Nolan, but he totally bombed in choosing Katie Holmes for Batman Begins. Which brings me back to Hathaway...

At any rate, I am happy to see they are including Catwoman. MEooow!

I thought Nolan was crazy for casting Ledger as the Joker. So I'll trust him on this. And Hardy will likely make an awesome Bane- have him be the mental and physical equal of Batman. And he can certainly look the part of a jacked up guy too:

Hathaway can act- she was nominated for an Oscar last year or 2 years ago I think. And yes, if they have her as Catwoman in the suit (maybe she just stays as Selina in the movie?) I hope they don't have her be some tiny waif beating up 220lb thugs in hand to hand combat. I hate movies with Waif Fu.

I am more skeptical of Hathaway. I think she is gorgeous, but I don't think thats enough for Batman anymore.

My visual standard for Catwoman is in Jim Lee's Hush. Her suit looked more functional and less S&M. And that pic of Hardy has basically convinced me he can look the part.

Yeah, knowing that its Nolan and he'll try to have things grounded in realism, I'd guess Catwoman will take more after Jim Lee's version and not, say, Tim Burton's. Which is a good thing, IMO.

Hmm, not sure about Bane..... I mean in this current movie arc it is a much more realistic type of world compared to the comics (IE noone with super powers or super abilities beyond a normal person) unless they just turn Bane into a drug abuser who just ignores pain when under the influence.

I was actually kinda hoping for Hugo Strange to be in this one, someone who deals with extreme personalities coming in and slowly peeling away the idea and symbol that is Batman to reveal the person underneath, especially with the police after him that would be quite a tail.

My guess is Bane will likely be a bruiser-type, probably addicted to some type of science-fiction super-steroid (though not one that transforms him or anything) and hopefully he'll be hyper-intelligent like in his first incarnation, and totally obsessed with defeating Batman.

As for Catwoman.  I'm thinking a take that has her as a Jewel Thief/Rich Socialite double life so she can mirror Bruce as a love interest.  Anne has could fill out a bit and be bit more muscular and athletic for the film, I think, though I don't know if they'll do it that way or not.

I went "hmmm" after finding out that Hathaway was Catwoman. But I think the woman can act, and I trust Nolan.

Closest pic to a catwoman-hathaway. Haha.

According to IMDB Hardy is 5'9'' and Bale is 6'. I always thought Bane was supposed to be huge. My initial fear about Hathaway is she looks way too skinny any time I've seen her, she doesn't seem to have that grace and athleticism that you would expect with Catwoman.

I fear Hathaway will be a repeat of Katie Holmes. She's certainly a better actress than Holmes but tends to get overshadowed by costars (especially Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada). Not convinced she'll be able to effectively play a dark character. Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) would be my top pick.

I thought Bale was 6' 2", so if Hardy is 5'9", he'll need to be wearing highheels. And I totally agree about Noomi Rapace. Damn, why didn't they consider her? She'd be perfect. Hathaway seems like Tinkerbell in comparison.

Edit: just looked it up, most sites list Bale at about 6 ft. Guess I'm wrong.

Hmm, Idk Tom Hardy as Bane? Isn't Bane supposed to be huge. Hathaway looks skinny and doesn't really fit the role of Catwoman, in my opinion. However, she can act so maybe she'll do fine. Oh well if Nolan chose her than it's ok. That guy usually knows what he's doing.

In Nolan we trust :)

I have an idea. Keep Tom Hardy for Bane, fire everyone else... then cast Deadshot, Scandal Savage, Jeanette, Ragdoll and Catman, and make a Secret Six movie. Now that, I would go see.

I don't entirely trust Nolan's casting abilities. He screwed up with Holmes, and I think he screwed up with Gyllenhaal too. Neither of them held their own with the rest of the cast. Are poor female leads a weakness for him? I mean, it still baffles me how bad Holmes was in Batman Begins.

Nooni Rapace was so convincing in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She was frakking ruthless, driven, and intelligent. I just loved her. She would have made the perfect Catwoman.
