More interesting is who is the companion, for whom Aveline is a placeholder!

It's drunken Alistair! It would be awesome!
And if there is a choice between Templars/Apostates, I bet there is companion you get only on each side.
That would be epic, or drunken alistair dressed in morrigans robes.

Spoiler alert. *Valley Girl Sigh*
Cassandra - We know it's a framed narrative, but who is to say that Verric is the only narrator? After Verric tells what he knew of Hawke, Cassandra relates how she met the Champion of Kirkwall and what exactly she's searching for. Within the narrative, we can have her join Hawke's party or not.
Nice ideas!
I could very much get behind Cassandra. I don't mean anything by that of course.
Or do I?

Maybe the game would switch to direct narrative? Hawke comes in as she's talking to Varric, says "you were looking for me, well here I am" and the game goes on from there. Or, something.Maria Caliban wrote...

Why would she be interrogating him if she knew the champion though?
1. She only knew Hawke for a short while. Verric has 10 years of history wherein she might have only known the Champion for a few months.
2. Mary has said that the group of six people in the hexigon aren't Hawke's companions (we known you don't even have to meet Isabela) but a group of 'suspects.' What Cassandra wants seems to be tied up with Hawke, but also larger than the search for one person.

Or he comes through the doorway and she's like "There you are!" and rips her top off and they totally go at it. Varric's stunned at first, but he gets over it.

highly doubt it, i was full friendly with sten, helped him find his sword, and he STILL warned me there would be a time his people will invade, and that he hopes not to see me at that time.Lorste wrote...
Sten? as the Qunari are one of the 'badguys' in DA2, I think Sten would be plausible, his time spent in Ferelden changed his views etc etc and now fights to change his peoples ways? ..
Edit: although we did have the choice of leaving him to the darkspawn in a cage...
sten is loyal to the qunari, and would likely attempt to kill the warden personally if ordered to.
