Because it'd be kind of interesting.  And she's one of the major characters we've seen that we don't know enough about to dismiss the idea.

If the last part takes place in the present then sure she can be.
Otherwise it's just stupid for her to interrogate Varric imo. That would be like Wynne interrogating Sten to learn more about the warden:unsure:

DA2 ending with Varric's interrogation can also lead into DA3; Cassandra doesn't have to actively assist Hawke to play an important role in future DA titles.

I never said she wasn't important, I just said she probably wasn't  a companion.

Jade Empire has Death's Hand and the Toad Demon. Mass Effect 2 had Legion. Dragon Age: Origins had Loghain. I've noticed a secret companion in three of BioWare's titles, therefore they're obliged to put one in every game hereafter.

Who/what do you think the secret companion will be? They're usually a prominent character who can join you late game.

I have a strong feeling we need to sacrifice someone for this.

Cassandra - We know it's a framed narrative, but who is to say that Verric is the only narrator? After Verric tells what he knew of Hawke, Cassandra relates how she met the Champion of Kirkwall and what exactly she's searching for. Within the narrative, we can have her join Hawke's party or not.

I love this. It gives me great satisfying that one of my companions handle Varric quite well. muahahah.

Revan was the craziest secret companion ever. I still remember how I felt during the montage of all the hints that had been dropped throughout the game. I was just like "naww, that can't be ri-oh god. It's right."

It would be interesting if it was Cassandra. In DA:O, JE and ME2, the secret companions, Loghain, Death's Hand and Legion join you just before the final battle.
So once Varric's finished telling the story, the game could resume with them, Cassandra finding Hawke and them doing whatever it is that needs doing. Or fighting, whatever.

Alternatively, the companion could be the option of turning Anders' body completely over to Vengeance's control (instead of exorcising him/turning him back, etc). This would be similar to other 'evil' options that appear in other Bioware games, like sacrificing Samara for Morinth, Chai Ka for Ya Zhen, etc.
