Thats unacceptable (even if the problem is confined to a small minority) - is this really the official line?!
This is the last message I got :
We will pass the information you have provided to the development team. Regretfully we do not have information on if or when a fix will be put in place. They are however collecting data from the community and are examining solutions if they determine enough customers have the problem and the problem is technically addressable with a patch, or if a work around is possible.
Certainly development will use the information gathered to ensure that this problem does not occur in future releases. If you are not interested in tracking this issue on the message board, please know that you will automatically be notified if an official solution to this problem in the form of a work around or patch is discovered.
In the mean time, I am notifying my supervisor that you have an unresolved problem that we have no fix for. We at EA customer service make every attempt to resolve each issue, but sometimes a resolution is simply not possible due to problems beyond our control.
I don't know if it's really the "official" atitude since I have no idea how they work.
I'm a bin skeptic about the gathering part since they didn't asked me which PS3 model I have (40, 60gb...) (I forgot to tell them).
I hope they'll do something, it's such a great game.
If you want to read the full discusion (please note than I'm not an english guy so I'm pretty sure I violated all the English's grammar rules)

Can anyone who's had saves corrupted actually confirm if all these backups I'm making can actually be used if the data does corrupt again?
I was too busy throwing my controller against the wall the first time this happened to pay close attention--is it only the (copyable) saved files that are corrupted, or is the (uncopyable) "Profile: Game Progress/Settings" file also affected? And, if so, does that throw up any roadblocks to using these backed-up save files?
Making regular backups is something I can easily adapt to (and just good practice in general), but it would make me feel better if I knew I was accomplishing something with these backups and not just engaging in some ritual of magical thinking. Thanks.

I run through another test. On my alt profile i created a saved game and then deleted profile file. Still could load my carrier. Although all my in-game achivments went to hell. It leads to a conslusion that corruption of profile saved data should not affect carrier save game. Correct me if i am wrong.
Which of the two save data files gets corrupted? Maybe both of them? Please, clarify this.

Guys could you please make it clear for me, cuz i got a bit confused after reading all your posts. Does it copy-saved profile data file get corrupted or is it just character save, which contains all of the savegames. Today i made a backup of one of my carrier saves, deleted it, then copied back to PS3 disk. Everything was ok. So you can make a backup of your save or not?

Yeah I was curious to this as well it seems that everybody is either putting stuff like manually backing up sucks or why won't they just let us copy our saves. So which one is it? I think what we need is to have somebody who has been backing up the unprotected file to a usb drive get their HDD files corrupted and then try to use their usb back up save to continue. If that scenario works out then I will feel okay. Losing a couple hours here or there is tolerable until a fix comes. Losing entire careers is complete rediculousness.
The worst part of all this is I only got on here to see if people were experiencing the same audio sync and graphical bugs that I was and then I see all of these corrupt save file threads and now I'm paranoid. I'm 30 hours in and have had zero issues with freezing and have gone through Shadow Broker and Overlord which seem to be the bigger freeze zones. I guess I'm fortunate but I feel like I've been rolling the dice based on all these threads.

It's both. There's a file that contains saved games that can be copied (though manually backing up stuff does indeed suck), and a file called "profile" that the PS3 won't let us copy. Both myself and Grabeq were wondering if only one or both files get affected.

If this is true, this is good news (at least as good as we could have hoped). It's definitely the save files that get corrupted. When it happened to me, I couldn't load any saves within my career any more (only had the option to load saves in an earlier career I had created and didn't like), but my achievements were still intact and carried over to the next career I created.
The save files can be backed up and re-loaded to replace the corrupted data. The character profile data should remain unaffected. And even if it does get affected ... I'm much more okay with losing my trophies than I am losing an entire career.

From looking at the saves on the HD it appears to be by design also as it would appear that each character has only one single actual save file which contains ALL the game saves for said character. One crash and all your character data is gone. I'm honestly flabbergasted at the decision to save in this manner.
Seriously - I can understand that it might take them awhile to release a patch that fixes the bugs creating these freezes and save data corrupts, but in the meantime couldn't they just release a stopgap patch that separates the saved games for a career into separate files? It just seems like a no-brainer. Aside from cutting down on redundant data, is there any reason why the saves have to be bundled into a single file--and would this really be all that difficult to fix?

This is just jaw-droppingly bad design. They went against standard practive to make it easier to lose save data. I really can't wrap my head around this.

Personally I'm not okay with loosing anything, but guess I'll also start copying the Career savefile to USB.Will probably just stop playing ME2 until this is taken care of by EA/BioWare though.

Electronic Arts,
Mass Effect 2 for Playstation 3 occassionally freezes and corrupts all save game data. This is a hot topic on the Bioware forums and many people are angry about it. How can we fix this? There are many bugs with this game including memory leaks, freezing, graphical errors, and physics issues like walking on air, but this one bug that corrupts all of your save game data is a game-breaker.
More info on Bioware forums:

Thanks,

Hi Shawna,
Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.
This could also be an issue involving corrupt game save files. You will need to remove game related save data by following the below given steps.
1. Press the PS button on the controller to enter the PLAYSTATION 3 XBM (XrossMediaBar).
2. Select the Game tab.
3. Select the Save Data Utility and press the X button.
4. Delete the file related to the game.
Confirm that you have updated the Playstation 3 computer entertainment system with the most recent system software. You can check the version you have installed on your Playstation 3 by selecting:
- Settings.
- Then System Settings.
- Then System Information.
Confirm that you are not using any game modification devices. Unlicensed devices such as game modification devices can interfere with the proper function of the software. We do not recommend the use of any game modification devices or unlicensed products.
========================================
At this point in time I would like you to go ahead and disable your media servers. After doing this please clear the game data utility one more time and then go ahead and reboot your system. Log in to your PSN ID and then please check and see if the game will allow you to play.
If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to reply to this email.
Thanks and regards,
Allan

Allan,
Thank you for responding, however:
-I deleted the corrupted save game data, but that does not prevent the game from corrupting future saves
-My PS3 software is already up to date
-I am not using any modification devices or unlicensed products
-I have no media servers
-There is not a problem where the game will not allow me to play, I can play just fine. Its just that the game has many issues with it, and occasionally it freezes and corrupts save game data.
If someone from EA could take a look at the Mass Effect 2 Playstation 3 Technical Support Forum on the Bioware Social Network (its an unofficial support forum) they would realize this game was launched with many issues that the EA game testers overlooked. But I'm more specifically looking for a fix for the save game corruption bug. Could you please let me know if this bug is going to be addressed?
Hi Shawna,
Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts.
I'm sorry to hear that you are still experiencing difficulties. If you have performed all the basic troubleshooting steps but still not able to play the game, then this is usually an indication that the console is having difficulty reading the game disc. This could be for many reasons; usually this is because the game disc is damaged or unreadable but in some situations this can be the sign of a more serious issue with your console.
Confirm the disc is clean. To clean a disc, use lint-free cleaning cloths made specifically for cleaning CD/DVD discs, sold at computer software stores. When cleaning the disc, we recommend starting from the innermost circle, and wiping out to the edge in a straight line.
We do not recommend wiping in a circular motion, as it may create more scratches on the disc.
Note: Other materials, such as a paper towel or a T-shirt, may also scratch the disc. If there are any scratches, smudges, or fingerprints on the disc, it may not function properly. Also, do not use or insert any CD/DVD drive cleaners into the Playstation 3 as doing so may cause damage to the system.
Try playing different CDs, DVDs, and games on the Playstation 3 console to see if the problem exists across multiple discs. Also try playing the disc on a different Playstation 3 console.
If the game disc works in another system, this is an indicator that your Playstation 3 console may be damaged. For information on getting your system repaired or replaced, you will want to contact Playstation 3 directly for assistance at 1-800-345-SONY (7669).
Hours of Operation:
• Monday through Saturday, 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
• Sunday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Pacific Time
If the game disc does not work in another system, this is a good indicator that the disc is damaged or defective. To acquire a replacement game disc you will want to refer to your manual for warranty information specific to your product.
The options we recommend for game replacement, if needed, are as follows. You may replace the game through the store where you originally purchased it, if that option is still possible. This is by far the faster way to replace your game with a new copy. If the store is no longer able to replace your game, you may then make use of the EA Warranty, found on the inside back of your game manual, or you may use this link: http://warrantyinfo.ea.com/.
If you choose to use the warranty, please read through the instructions carefully. If you have any particular questions regarding the policy, please use the Contact Us link as you have before, and choose Warranty in the Category drop down box to direct your question to the Warranty department of Electronic Arts.
If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to reply to this email.
Thanks and regards,
Roberto

Nancy: I am sorry for the delay
Nancy: I am sorry for the inconvenience caused to you due to this issue. There is not much that customer service can do in this type of case. I would however advise you to report the glitch on the official forums for the game. These forums are regularly reviewed by the game developers and this is the fastest way to notify any game glitch to the game developers.
Nancy: You may also want to check our message boards for help and assistance. You can find the message boards at the below given link :-
http://forums.ea.com...ards/index.jspa
Iain Scott Hamilton: The official forums pointed us here to post our problem
Iain Scott Hamilton: "Official game support can be found with EA Customer Support. This forum is for fans to help each other with technical suggestions or advice. BioWare staff will also assist if available, but the fastest and best way to get support is through EA Customer Service."
Iain Scott Hamilton: there is the post from the official forum
Iain Scott Hamilton: so can I ask that the details of the bug I and others are encountering is passed as a matter of priority to the bioware team so it can be investigated.
Nancy: I am really sorry but if you want to report any bug there is only one way to report it and that is to post it on our official forums as these forums are regularly visited by our developers team and this is the fastest to to notify any issue with any game
So there you go, they either pick up on it here or they don't. Marvellous. With that I'm off to try and get my money refunded. I'll repurchase when it's been fixed or reduced in price by half. Whichever comes first.
