I enjoy fps games and rpgs. That does not mean I want Half-Life taking on role-playing elements. A Half-Life is a game whose style is only made possibly when played from the first person perspective. I may like RPGs, but the inclusion of these mechanics means I am no longer playing Half-Life as it was originally designed.

I don't think this is the same thing. Essentially, mixtures of this sort are their own kind of feature.

i.e. party control is a kind of feature, FPS is a kind of feature, and stat-based aiming like in ME1 is a third kind of feature. You can like the first, you can like the second, but you can hate the third.

They are consumed together. How exactly does one go about consuming 'only' the silent protagonist?

Because it is a dialogue implementation. Here is an example.

VO and the dialogue wheel are a paired feature. You could have VO without the wheel; but DA2 gives you both. You might like VO and hate the wheel, so the addition of the wheel makes you actually dislike the content.

But VO+dialogue are also a feature in themselves - the dialogue UI. If you like that kind of UI, and it replaces another kind of UI, then these features are perfectly separable.

But no feature is designed completely independent of all others. People enjoyed playing Dragon Age:Origins based on certain criteria that the game met. One of these was the silent protagonist. When that changed, some were turned off, despite the fact that they enjoyed voice-acting. They look at games like Mass Effect/the Witcher and say "Hey, that's why I play Mass Effect/the Witcher, not why I play Dragon Age". This ends up segregating the fanbase. It doesn't matter if they like both, because to them part of the experience of playing Dragon Age is in the silent protagonist + party dynamic. Remove the silent protagonist and it is no longer DA:O, but something else.

But what I am saying is this is exactly what does not make sense.  I like this set of features, but how dare some other game have them.

You can say, DA2 I will like less than DA:O because of this feature. But saying I will not buy DA:O but this other identical game because of the exact same features, which I dislike now because they are a change from other features I like... I basically can't see how this is anything other than basically throwing a tantrum.

Look at what you just said: silent PC + party dynamics. You couldn't enjoin these. You basically needed to outright point out that we can bundle these features toghether.

And even then, no one says that DA2 sucks because it has PC VO and party control which is a combination that can't work.

And to those who think DA2 is being targeted at a younger audiance. Ya, I can agree with that. As opposed to DA:O being targeted to us old school RPG fans and BG fans. But I don't think it's being targeted to a younger audiance in a way that will hurt the experiance. Besides, the story looks as strong as any bioware game, and thats what I really care about!

But think about it this way: DA:O sold 3 million copies. Either there are 3 million BG 'style' fans, and so Bioware is eitehr insane or an exclusively design philsophy driven company... or many of those 3 millions were this precise audience and Bioware is now rewarding their purchase of DA:O by "catering" to them.

Except, you know. Companies, especially the big ones, don't rewards consumers. They give consumers incentives, but never reward them.

The point of trolling is to make it seem like you are earnest. That is why you fail.

I shouldn't say TARGETED at a younger audience. Thats not quite what I mean. I mean APPEALS more to a younger audience, in the fact the gameplay is simpler, more action oriented, and more visually appealing. Now this doesn't just appeal to the younger crowd, it also appeals to many other crowds, such as action gamers and casual gamers... two groups which younger gamers tend to fall into although by no means are dominated by.

See DA2's evolution is pretty damn clear cut and easy to get. DA:O was very well received, good reviews by fan and critic alike. BUT it also received a pretty good amount of criticism. Very consistent criticism. Boring looking/clumsy combat, very cliche' looking world and graphics, silent dialogue, ect. I know the majority of reviews I read said this and the game did get a good amount of bashing from players as well... although haters of DA:O have long since dissipated from these forums.

DA2 is literally attacking head on the major and most consistent criticism of the first game. But its taking it to an extreme. Take the graphics for example... DA:O looked pretty generic according to many players and critics. So DA2 totally changed the visual style, even radically redoing some races *like darkspawn*. This is good in that their fixing a common complaint, but bad in that they're doing it to an extreme that may alienate people who didn't mind or liked DA:O's visuals. Thats pretty much the story of the game... regardless of outcome, I gotta give bioware credit for having guts!

Looks like you need to do some more thinking.  Hopefully you do understand though, and just faking it to annoy him.  I would like to keep my faith in humanity at a relatively high level, if you dont mind

all right, since it seems people want to call each other names and bicker back and forth rather than have an actual discussion, i'm shutting this down. Remember that we can disagree with each other without resorting to juvenile name-calling and insults. Thank you.

End of line.
